Natick Public Schools2011 Summer ReadingEntering Grades 1-4

Dear Natick families,Summer is a time for relaxing and enjoying fun activities that are meaningful to you.We hope that reading books together is a part of your summer plans. The following list ofsuggested books includes recently published titles as well as familiar favorites. Many ofthese books are available at our public libraries and local bookstores. The grade-level designations are approximate guidelines and some titles appear onmore than one list because they have broad appeal. The reader's interests, level ofbackground knowledge and capabilities should be guidelines in making appropriate choices.Natick Public School students know how to choose "just right" books for themselves. Whilereading independently, children should be encouraged to remember the good reader strategiesthat they have learned in the classroom. Younger readers should always use the words and thepictures to make meaning. Any reader who is challenged by a word should remember toreread and to focus on making sense of the text. Another strategy for younger readers is tolook at the first letter of a word, the last letter of a word or to search for a smaller known wordwithin a larger word. More experienced readers can use context and their knowledge ofprefixes, root words and suffixes. All readers can ask themselves, "Can I make anyconnections? How do my connections relate to what I just read?" Readers of all ages enjoybeing read to. We hope that you have a happy summer of reading.Allison Lenk, Reading Specialist, Bennett-Hemenway SchoolLeigh Ann Langan, Media Assistant, Bennett-Hemenway SchoolSusan Kennedy, Reading Specialist, Brown SchoolBarbara Macransky, Media Assistant, Brown SchoolTerri Stafford, Media Assistant, Johnson SchoolMegan Reilly-Padilla, Reading Specialist, Lilja SchoolBecky Moss, Media Assistant, Lilja SchoolNancy VanTassel, Reading Specialist, Memorial SchoolMaria Young, Media Assistant, Memorial School
