The Ministry for <strong>the</strong> EnvironmentCorradoClini presented today an agreement by <strong>the</strong> seat of Benetton Group to analyze, calculate andreduce CO 2 emissions caused by production activities in <strong>the</strong> factory of Monastir (Tunisia). Thefocus will be on <strong>the</strong> carbon footprint assessment of two children’s products ( t-shirt and polo ) toevaluate reduction measures in order to obtain carbon neutral products.As first step toward emission reduction, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Italian</strong> brand will join <strong>the</strong> “PROSOL industry” programpromoted by <strong>the</strong> Tunisian Government in collaboration <strong>with</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Italian</strong> Ministry for <strong>the</strong>Environment, <strong>the</strong> United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and <strong>the</strong> Mediterranean RenewableEnergies Center (MEDREC) to endeavor <strong>the</strong> spread of solar heating technology in <strong>the</strong> industrial andmanufacturing field in Tunisia. A huge solar manifold (surface 1000 m 2 )is going to be installed inBenetton’s factory in Monastir <strong>with</strong> <strong>the</strong> technical support of <strong>the</strong> Politecnico di Milano for <strong>the</strong>planning phase and for <strong>the</strong> realization of this solar system.This choice will pave <strong>the</strong> way to <strong>the</strong> application on a large scale of solar heat tech in <strong>the</strong> industrialprocesses <strong>with</strong> huge energy consumptions. In Europe <strong>the</strong> industrial sector uses 30% of <strong>the</strong> energyamount.

Procedures for Product Environmental Management will be activatedby <strong>the</strong> factory inIndunoOlona (VA), where Carlsberg Italia operates through environmentalfootprint assessment of products life cycle and identification of measures for <strong>the</strong> optimization of <strong>the</strong>environmental performance. The working plan is involved in a previous sustainability programrealized by Carlsberg, that has brought an innovative draught beer technology, called“DraughtMaster”- <strong>with</strong>out any CO 2 component and employing recyclable PET beer kegs instead of“green” steel kegs.Part of <strong>the</strong> beer industry since 1975, Carlsberg gave start to a revolution in <strong>the</strong> beer market,developing and launching <strong>the</strong> DraughtMasterTM Modular 20. NTV,instead, is going to evaluate <strong>the</strong> CO2 emissions of <strong>the</strong> route Rome-Turin covered by <strong>the</strong> train Italo.Oscar Farinetti has underlined <strong>the</strong> commitment of Eataly in favor of sustainability : “Eataly willbuild a huge project ‘of respect’ in Turin, called Green Retail Park. On <strong>the</strong> field where <strong>the</strong> stores ofCarpano Fabric will take form 10.500qm completely alimented by self-generated natural energy and<strong>with</strong> a beautiful green field as a roof. On <strong>the</strong> inside only ecological no food products will be sold:clothing, ‘green’ shoes, furniture made <strong>with</strong> natural and recycled materials, electrical and ecologicalcars.Italo is made <strong>with</strong> 98% of re cycling materials and its reduced weight (about less 70 tonne) allowsto use less 15% of energy per passenger in comparison <strong>with</strong> a traditional train. This means anannual eco save of 650.000 kWh over a segment f 500.000 km <strong>with</strong> consequent reduction of CO2emissions.”The program has <strong>the</strong> purpose to experiment on large scale <strong>the</strong> different methodologies of measuringenvironmental performances, taking into account <strong>the</strong> peculiarities of each economic sector in orderto balance and render <strong>the</strong>m replicable. The <strong>agreements</strong> signed today will allow <strong>the</strong> improvement of<strong>the</strong>se methodologies for retail sales and transports by rail.

The company is committed to define a methodology for <strong>the</strong>calculation of GHG emissions <strong>with</strong>in its own organization.With this understanding, <strong>the</strong> company streng<strong>the</strong>ns fur<strong>the</strong>r its will to reduce climate change, inaddition to <strong>the</strong> policy of environmental impact reduction along its supply chain during <strong>the</strong> phases ofgoods transport from <strong>the</strong> warehouse to <strong>the</strong> dealers in Italy, showing its commitment for <strong>the</strong>elaboration of a GHG emissions management system, valid for <strong>the</strong> big distribution sector and usefulto reduce one’s own emissions. For each one of <strong>the</strong> carbon footprint
assessment activities, <strong>the</strong> proper GHG emission reduction measures will be taken, integrated by <strong>the</strong>carbon neutral measures.The complete fulfillment of <strong>the</strong> <strong>voluntary</strong> agreement will be monitored by an orientation andcontrol committee <strong>with</strong> <strong>the</strong> purpose of ensuring a successful collaboration between <strong>the</strong> parties.The agreement is in large part in line <strong>with</strong> a sustainable development route, launched by <strong>the</strong> City ofCosenza from some years, to which <strong>the</strong> energetic efficiency of public sites of <strong>the</strong> city, <strong>the</strong> signatureof <strong>the</strong> “PattodeiSindaci” and <strong>the</strong> project “Smart city”.
