Lori OatwayParent Council would like to welcome back all of our new and returning families to the 2013-2014 schoolyear. We had our annual Parent Council meeting on September 17th. Unfortunately we had an extremely poorturnout and we were unable to have elections for this year's council. If there are any parents that are interestedin attending council meetings or interested in holding a position on Council, we would encourage you to takethe time to become involved. Parent Council is an excellent way to interact with staff at the school andbecome involved and active in your Child's education. I realize that with ever increasing demands on our timefrom sports and other activities, it can become difficult to find the time. Rest assured that Parent Councildoesn't require a huge time commitment - only 5 meetings left for the year - and it will give you the 'insidescoop' on many of the school activities. We hope to see you at our next meeting in October.Parent Council has decided to go ahead with our fundraising activities for the year. Watch your child's backpackfor information on the magazine and cookie dough fundraiser coming out in the next week. The money thatcomes back to the school pays for field trips, sports equipment and other school benefits.Magazine and Cookie Dough Sales will begin Thursday, September 26th. The joys of reading are crucial to a child’s all round development.Stories are a good medium of imparting knowledge and information in an interesting and amusing way.To read a short story to a child requires only a short concentration span and so they enjoy reading them. Difficult subjects like history,geography, science become easy to understand when they are presented in the form of a story. Kids become curious to learn moreand learning becomes a fun activity.Reading stories about people of different communities and from different parts of the world gives a global perspective to the child.They present an opportunity to get a close look at various people, cultures and religions. This intercultural understanding instills respectfor all.Good values and the right attitude are instilled in a child at an early age, through stories for kids. Young readerscharacter through inspirational stories.develop a strongReading improves the attention level of a child, increases his vocabulary and helps sharpen his memory too. Discussing stories andwhy characters acted in certain ways encourages critical thinking in the child. It also presents an opportunity for socializing with thechild and gives the educator an additional idea about the child’s interests.It is generally accepted that when kids get involved in anything interesting they learn it faster and also retain thatlearning.We teach reading daily at <strong>Father</strong> <strong>Lacombe</strong>, but the skills must be practiced daily at HOME to increase reading fluency and comprehension.We encourage you to read as much as possible with your children. Even our older students need to be still practicing theseskills to achieve success in their future education.
