Transforming Vision to Reality

And so it begins 

In our last two issues of Pathfinders, we have touched on the subject of Campus 

Renewal. In this issue, we make it our main focus because the milestone moment 

has arrived! 

The most extensive building project in Gundersen Lutheran history has begun. 

Ground has been broken on the La Crosse Campus to make way for a new hospital 

that is the centerpiece of a thoughtful and comprehensive renewal plan. Just as 

the overall renewal project will take multiple years to accomplish, so will the 

associated capital campaign led by Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation. 

We are already deeply grateful for the commitments received from within the 

Gundersen Lutheran community—doctors, nurses, board members, employees 

and institutional entities who have responded to the initial phase of our 

fundraising efforts. Why do they give? Why is philanthropy so important? Why is 

this project of such great benefit to the community? You’ll find answers to these 

questions, and more, within this issue. 

In the words of the great scientist Marie Curie: The way of progress is neither 

swift nor easy. And yet, it is exciting! These new facilities will greatly enhance 

the Foundation’s primary mission of medical education and research. We look 

forward to announcing the public phase of the Campus Renewal campaign later 

this spring, and inviting the entire community to join us in making history.

Gundersen Lutheran is recognized as one of 

the top five percent of hospitals nationwide 

for quality patient outcomes, yet our current 

hospital facility does not reflect this. Our vision is to 

create a physical environment that rises to the level of

heart rhythm. After my son was born, the doctors at 

Gundersen Lutheran did a procedure to fix it. I felt so

Celebrating community philanthropy 

For Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation, the responsibility of good stewardship 

includes a commitment to recognizing and communicating the results of our donors’ 

generosity with clarity and transparency. Our annual Heritage Celebration, which 

honors donors whose cumulative gifts total $200 or more within a calendar year, is part 

of that stewardship tradition. 

This year’s event—recognizing gifts made between January 1 and December 31, 2010— 

will be held on April 27, 28, 29, 2011. As always, our goal is to make the Foundation’s

Campus Renewal project. 

Why is the Foundation seeking 

community support for this 

project? It seems like Gundersen 

Lutheran could pay for a new 

hospital if it is needed. 

“Philanthropic dollars donated to this 

health system are extremely important 

versus money from other sources. The 

operational margin here is very thin. 

Last year it was 3.4 percent, and that’s 

nothing like what a private company 

makes in their profit or so-called 

operating margin. 

Having such a low margin means 

we are very limited in what we can 

spend for new things, such as a new 

building, new equipment, changes in 

old buildings, and so on. If we borrow 

money, we have to pay it off over a long 

period of time because we’re making so 

little on operating margin. That payoff 

is very burdensome for a place that 

is trying to get ahead in medical care 

while competing in a national market 

for doctors, and competing with very 

good surrounding institutions. 

The advantage of dollars given to us 

through philanthropy is that they are 

over and above our operating margin. 

To put it in dollars and cents, I like to 

put it this way: if the Foundation is so 

lucky as to raise $3.4 million through 

philanthropy, that is the same as the 

system having to raise $100 million 

through operations.”

This campaign appeals to everyone 

in the community, not just those 

who receive their care at Gundersen 

Lutheran? Why is that? 

“A campaign like this raises 

everybody’s awareness of how 

important this place is in community 

economics. Being the biggest health 

care employer means we are the largest 

source of spending in this community. 

Our payroll has a major ripple effect 

on the economic well-being of this 

entire area. So when people think about 

making a gift to us, they also buy into 

this aspect of why we’re here and what 

we do for the community. While we 

benefit from the dollars given to us, 

the community’s philanthropy tends to 

promote a feeling of teamwork that we, 

plus all of our supporters out there, are 

part of one big economic engine. We 

should be proud of it.” 

Average people with average 

incomes are important to the 

overall success of this campaign. 

Why so much interest in 

contributing to a new hospital? 

“This hospital and many hospitals 

across the country began as an entirely 

donated project by the community. In 

our case, we exist because Norwegian 

Lutherans in this area wanted a hospital 

of their own, and raised money—all 


of it donated—so they could then 

borrow more to build the Lutheran 

hospital. Being a community hospital 

means the community has always been 

involved in helping us thrive. Every 

single expansion program since the 

beginning, save for one, has involved 

a community campaign program. It’s 

because that’s what we are, and we 

have been from the very beginning, a 

community hospital.” 

My budget for charitable giving 

is pretty tight right now. What if 

I can’t afford to make a big gift in 

this economy? 

“There is a long term nature to this 

project, and I do think long term giving 

options appeal to people. After all, 

the bond issues for our borrowing will 

be paid off over 30 years. We’ve been 

working with donors so they can spread 

out their contribution over many years. 

People who like this idea and are going 

to be around for a long time can spread 

out a pledge over time. I like it when a 

doctor I’ve talked to sends in a pledge 

form for 10 years or more—it means 

they like it here and they’re going 

to stay. For a community member it 

means they believe in La Crosse, like 

the idea, and are willing to support us 

for the long term.” 

What is the economic impact of the 

building project itself? 

“At any one time, about 95 percent of 

the workers on this project are going 

to be local workers. People want to see 

jobs go to people in this community, 

and our contract with the construction 

management company calls for using 

local labor as much as possible. It’s 

a big project—the building footprint 

is three times the size of our East 

Building—and virtually all of the 450 

workers out here building it will be 

local people. Many different types of 

contractors are involved: plumbing, 

heating, mechanical, all that.” 

Construction is going to take 

several years. Even with all your 

efforts to minimize inconvenience 

to patients, will it be worth it? 

“It seems like progress, whether 

in politics or government or in our 

situation, depends on overcoming 

some inconvenience in order to 

get something accomplished. The 

inconvenience of construction is 

considerable. Taking care of sick 

people, sometimes dying people, in 

the midst of change is not easy. But 

we have our eye on the future, and we 

know that if we don’t do this we will 

eventually be left in the wake of health 

care in this region.” n

A new opportunity for making a 

difference in the lives of children 

One of the major lead gifts to the Campus Renewal campaign is coming from a 

historically generous and committed source: Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals ® . 

Earlier this year, the two committees that help oversee and coordinate Children’s 

Miracle Network Hospitals’ activity for Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation approved a 

pledge specifically toward funding of the Pediatric Pavilion within the new hospital. 

As a charitable entity that raises and donates funds to its affiliated children’s hospitals, Children’s Miracle 

Network Hospitals’ chief purpose is improving the lives of children. Gundersen Lutheran’s plans to devote an 

entire floor of the new hospital to women’s and children’s services were seen as a natural fit. The Pediatric 

Pavilion will create a child-friendly, multidisciplinary environment that brings together high risk obstetrics, 

labor and delivery, neonatal/pediatric intensive care, and inpatient pediatrics. The “pavilion” concept will 

improve Gundersen Lutheran’s ability to provide medical 

care for the most severely injured, sick and at-risk 

patients, bringing collaborative care teams 

directly to patients so children and their 

families won’t need to move between 

floors and buildings. The space will

New name, new logo, 

same mission 

As of January 1, 2011, Children’s Miracle 

Network became known by its new 

name: Children’s Miracle Network 

Hospitals®. The name change was 

researched and initiated at the national 

level to help solidify the organization’s 

purpose (raising funds and awareness 

for children’s hospitals) with partners 

and the public. Heather Gilles, Children’s 

Miracle Network Hospitals specialist 

with Gundersen Lutheran Medical 

Foundation, says the name and logo 

may be changing, but their work is 

not. “Our mission of treating children 

and providing care, regardless of the 

family’s ability to pay, will not change,” 

says Heather. “What distinguishes our 

fundraising model from other charities is 

that all of the money raised stays in the 

community where it’s raised. That also 

remains the same.” 

Gundersen Lutheran is proud to be 

one of 170 Children’s Miracle Network 

Hospitals that touch the lives of 

more kids and families than any other 

children’s charity worldwide. 


One family’s wish list: 

space and privacy 

Spending 63 days with her newborn daughter in the Neonatal Intensive 

Care Unit (NICU) is an experience Sarah Deckert Scott compares to climbing 

a mountain. “You can kind of see the path, but only so far ahead. There are 

stumbling blocks and rocky places, and then places where things are very 

clear.” 

Baby Karina was born 11 weeks early by emergency c-section, weighing 

just 2 pounds, 12 ounces. Over the next two months, all that mattered 

to Sarah was that her baby was getting the best care in the world from 

Dr. Kate Richmond and the outstanding NICU staff. Their family of four 

(father Kurt, sister Kallan, step-brother Alex) spent the better part of each 

day with Karina, sometimes joined by a grandmother or two. As Sarah says, 

“We overflowed our space in the nursery almost every day. There was a lot 

of stepping over wires, since there were at least three or four connecting 

Karina to different monitors, IV’s, and oxygen when she was on it.” 

What will a family-friendly hospital design mean 

to families like the Scotts?

According to their 

mother, “When she was 

holding her sister for 

the first time and made 

eye contact, that’s when 

their love affair began. 

They just adore each 

other.” Karina celebrated 

her first birthday in 

February. 

More space. “The tricky part was the days Karina had procedures done,” 

recalls Sarah. Additional staff at her bedside, plus any special equipment, 

plus “trying to close off her area with dividers while leaving space for 

nurses to get by and attend to everyone else,” made for more crowding. 

Sarah also notes how important it is for these tiny babies to save their 

energy for growing. A more spacious nursery means one crying baby is less 

likely to cause crying or fussing in others, creating a better environment 

for growth and development. 

More privacy. For those days that are not so good, “having the space to 

cry, or to have conversations,” would be helpful, says Sarah. “Also in terms 

of getting to know your baby so you know what she needs and become 

better prepared to take her home.” The Scott family appreciated the privacy 

they had in the shared NICU family room, “because it enabled us to be 

together as a family in a different way than when we were out on the floor 

with the others,” says Sarah. “You’re so conscious in that tiny space of not 

being in the way, and not wanting to be too loud. It’s like the difference 

between eating out with your family in a restaurant, and eating at home. 

Privacy provides a whole different comfort level.” n

provide greater privacy and include guest rooms and a lounge 

area for families. 

“In essence, this will be a dedicated women’s and children’s 

hospital area within the bigger physical plant of Gundersen 

Lutheran,” says Kathryn Richmond, MD, FAAP, medical 

director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). As a 

neonatal and pediatric intensivist, Dr. Richmond specializes 

in caring for the sickest of sick children from newborns who 

arrive weeks or months early to age 18. “I am very proud and 

humbled to be part of that bigger umbrella of people taking 

care of the kids in our community,” says Dr. Richmond. 

“That’s where Gundersen Lutheran really shines, because 

the depth and breadth of the pediatric specialists we have 

rivals big children’s hospitals. You don’t very often find 

communities or hospitals our size that have the treasure of 

a pediatric neurosurgeon, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon, 

a pediatric neurologist, a pediatric geneticist, a pediatric 

cardiologist—the whole cohort of people who provide 

subspecialty support to us hospitalists.” (Note: To read about

Tom Thompson, DVM, is a community volunteer who has 

served on Gundersen Lutheran’s Children’s Miracle Network 

Hospitals Trustees Committee since its formation 26 years 

ago. “I’ve come to really understand how people are challenged 

trying to raise kids with medical conditions. As 

parents, we know that hospitalizations of any kind have a 

huge impact on family members as well as patients,” says 

Thompson. “The vision for this pavilion is so exciting, and 

it will mean better care for generations of kids—our children’s 

children, and their families. As a businessman, I see 

many benefits to investing in the future medical needs of our 

community.” He and his fellow trustees were proud to structure 

a pledge that provides $5 million to the Campus Renewal 

campaign over a 10-year period, while also protecting ongoing 

operational support for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals’ 

funded activities. In that regard, it will be business as usual, 

says Thompson. “Our grant allocations budget will continue 

to perform as it has in the past, funding specialized equipment 

and programs that benefit children, and providing support to 

families and children with special healthcare needs.” n 

“Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals ® has made a 

commitment to help Gundersen Lutheran remain a 

community treasure for years to come and for that we 

are very thankful. Their gift is an investment that will 

continue our long standing tradition of families healed, 

medical advances discovered and outstanding staff 

recruited and trained. Our communities will be enriched 

because we are not just building a building. We’re building 

a better future—for all of us.”

NCCCP co-principal investigators 

Gundersen Lutheran receives major 

grant to enhance cancer services 

In 2010 Gundersen Lutheran became one of only 14 new sites 

chosen by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to participate in the 

NCI Community Cancer Centers Program (NCCCP). The NCCCP 

is a national network of 30 community cancer centers offering 

expanded research opportunities and state-of-the-art cancer care 

at hospitals and clinics serving largely rural, suburban, small-town 

and underserved urban populations. 

As an NCCCP site, Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation will 

receive about $2.7 million over two years in order to achieve a 

number of goals, including: 

• Reduce healthcare disparities 

• Improve access to clinical trials 

• Improve overall quality of care 

• Link with national computer networks that support research 

• Improve survivorship, palliative care services and 

patient advocacy 

The exciting work to bring cancer services closer to patients’ own 

communities and enhance our cancer programs, services and 

research will involve staff from both Gundersen Lutheran and 

Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation.

Physician Focus: Why we give 

Gundersen Lutheran physicians and their families have always been part of the community of givers who support 

Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation. In this article, we introduce two of the many “doctor philanthropists” 

who have expanded the scope of their giving to include a commitment to the Campus Renewal project. 

Ronald (Ron) Go, MD, FACP 

Hematology and Oncology 

Cancer and Blood Disorders Research 

Background: Has practiced at Gundersen Lutheran since 

2000. Born and raised in the Philippines, Dr. Go earned 

his medical degree at the University of Santo Tomas in 

Manila. He came to the United States in 1993 to do his 

internal medicine residency at Baylor College of Medicine, 

and completed his hematology and oncology fellowship at 

Mayo Clinic in Rochester. 

Family: wife Julie; sons Lucas (4) and Lewis (2); beloved 

Taiwanese rescue dog Benben (13) 

Why La Crosse: “What really attracted us—although 

we didn’t know right away—were the people here. In 

the community and the organization, everyone was just 

wonderful. Every effort was made to accommodate us. I 

came here fresh from my fellowship, mentioned my interest 

in doing research, and was given protected time to do that. 

This is my first job and will hopefully be my only job.” 


“It’s definitely a campaign for the 

community and everyone who comes here 

for better care.” 

Community involvement: The entire Go family— 

including Benben—delivers mobile meals several times 

a month as members of English Lutheran Church in 

La Crosse. In addition to being a full-time mom, Julie is 

an animal lover who passionately supports the work of the 

Coulee Region Humane Society. 

Dr. Ron Go’s awareness and support of Gundersen 

Lutheran Medical Foundation goes back to the very 

beginning of his career here. “I got to know people 

from the Foundation early from my research work and 

interest,” recalls Dr. Go. “Research funding comes from 

the Foundation and ultimately from the community, so it’s 

normal and natural that we should give back.” 

Dr. Go arrived at Gundersen Lutheran shortly before 

the campaign to build the Cancer Center in the new East 

Building and pledged his early support. Over the years he 

and Julie have given regularly to the Foundation’s annual 

fund and also direct gifts to support research. “We just 

have to give back,” explains Dr. Go. “That’s how we were 

brought up and it’s what we should do. Julie and I realize 

that everything I have earned is from the people in this 

community.” 

Gundersen Lutheran’s Center for Cancer and Blood 

Disorders is nationally recognized for its outreach efforts 

to cancer patients in rural areas; Dr. Go estimates more 

than half of his patients live outside the La Crosse area 

so he is acutely aware of the challenges they face. It’s just 

one of the reasons his family responded to the Campus 

Renewal campaign. “In order to provide better care you 

need the right people and the right environment for that 

care,” says Dr. Go. With a new hospital designed to meet the 

community’s needs for another 50 to 100 years, “there are 

lots of people who will benefit, including many from outside 

the area who come here for tertiary care. Maybe one day I’ll 

be in there as a patient myself.” n

Kathryn (Kate) Richmond, MD, FAAP 

Medical Director, NICU 

Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care 

Background: Has practiced at Gundersen Lutheran since 

2009. Previously served as a hospital-employed neonatologist 

in Grand Junction, Colorado. Dr. Richmond grew up 

and graduated from high school in Wisconsin, earned her 

medical degree in Ohio, and did her pediatric residency 

and neonatology fellowship in Madison at the University of 

Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics. 

Family: husband Craig; son Ben (12); daughter Marley (11); 

canine companions Goose (8) and Marbles (8 months) 

Why La Crosse: “We always knew we’d come back toward 

Wisconsin and waited for the perfect job opportunity. In 

addition to this perfect fit for me at Gundersen Lutheran, 

La Crosse offered great opportunities for education for 

my kids. Hockey is another reason – we are huge hockey 

fans and players. Plus, my mom and my brothers all live in 

Wisconsin.” 

Community involvement: The Richmonds donate time and 

money to their hockey association and also to Three Rivers 

Waldorf School, which their children attend. One of their 

daughter’s best friends has cystic fibrosis, so they support 

that cause on her behalf. As a dog-loving family, they also 

support the Coulee Region Humane Society. 

“My gift to this campaign is about 

me being a physician, but even more 

about being a member of the La Crosse 

community.” 

Dr. Kate Richmond is a providing mom for her family of 

four. Decisions about budgeting for charitable gifts within 

that single income are made as a family. “We involve our 

kids in the conversations about what kinds of gifts we give,” 

says Dr. Richmond. “Talking about what our family could 

do to help build this new hospital was a very natural part 

of our family discussion. We allocated and moved things 

around and made some five year plans about how we were 

going to be members of our community and be generous.” 

When she practiced in Colorado, Dr. Richmond served 

on the Board of Directors for the March of Dimes, so 

her passion for organizations that support children with 

chronic or life-threatening illness naturally followed her 

to La Crosse. Her gifts to Gundersen Lutheran Medical 

Foundation are designated to Children’s Miracle Network 

Hospitals ® because “they have a huge impact in my 

nursery,” Dr. Richmond explains. Support provided to 

families “makes the difference between families being able 

to get here, and eat, and buy vitamins for their kids. Having 

a child with an acute illness, or being diagnosed with 

cancer, or being born three months early, it can bankrupt 

families. Some proportion of that patient population may 

grow up with cerebral palsy or blindness or epilepsy or 

learning disabilities—so CMNH and the Foundation in 

general touches those patient’s lives for a lifetime.” 

Dr. Richmond’s pledge of support for the Campus 

Renewal project will directly benefit her patients through 

the planned Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in the 

new hospital, which will include private rooms and an 

improved healing environment for these tiny babies. “The 

greatest gift of the new private NICU rooms will be to 

families, for privacy and time to heal,” says Dr. Richmond. 

“I think infection rates, length of stay, mothers who 

are successfully breastfeeding at discharge, all of those 

standards are A+ right now, and will be A++ in the new 

space. It will be a treasure for families and children in this 

community, I know for sure.” n

A mAjor commitment to 

behAviorAl heAlth 



An area of health care we tend not 

to talk about a great deal is that of 

behavioral health. There are probably 

many reasons why that is, maybe the 

most common being the stigma that 

continues to surround the variety of 

behavioral health issues found in our 

society. Our community is no different 

than most in this regard. 

Gundersen Lutheran is committed 

to caring for children, adolescents 

and adults who suffer from mental 

illness. I was very pleased last year 

when our Board decided to address the 

limitations of our current Behavioral 

Health in-patient treatment facility 

and to include a new facility in the 

Campus Renewal project. It has been 

a recognized need for some time, 

recently becoming emergent because 

too often all of our beds are filled, and 

patients have to either be turned away 

or sent to facilities 100 miles or more 

away for treatment. This is particularly 

true of adolescents, since Gundersen 

Lutheran has the only three beds 

available in the community for this 

vulnerable population. 

As parents of an at-risk teenager 


suffering from depression or another 

mental illness, wouldn’t you want your 

son or daughter to be treated close 

to home, especially if they had to be 

admitted as an inpatient? Wouldn’t you 

want access to a warm, safe setting 

where you could visit your child, hug 

them every day and reassure them with 

the support of your friends and loved 

ones nearby? To address this urgent 

need in our community, the plans for 

the Behavioral Health building will 

increase Gundersen Lutheran’s capacity 

to serve patients of all ages, from 

children and adolescents to adults and 

geriatric patients. 

Our Campus Renewal campaign is 

looking to raise a significant amount 

of money to address these needs 

and improve the physical space and 

surroundings where treatment is 

offered. The goal is to create a healing 

environment with improved access to 

care for all patients, while also raising 

awareness of a serious health care need 

in the communities we serve. n

Renewal Project will no doubt be 

the largest expansion in our history. 

Gundersen Lutheran Medical 

Foundation is proud to play a major 

role in this historic endeavor. The result 

will be more than a new hospital. It’s a 

new ‘medical school’ that will be the 

teaching site for hundreds of students 

each year, and a research laboratory 

where new discoveries are sought. 

This project will take a long time, as 

will the fundraising efforts. Over time 

we will work with interested businesses 

and individuals to explore a variety 

of giving opportunities. A particular 

trend I have seen recently among our 

most faithful benefactors has warmed 

my heart, as well as theirs, and made a 

tremendous impact on many important 

programs. 

These benefactors have supported our 

Heritage Society over the course of 

many years. They know our mission 

and they know their contributions are 

put to good work in education and 

research. As special projects have 

surfaced, like the endowments for lung 

cancer research and clinical pastoral 

education, so too has the desire and 

interest to support them by individuals 

who are passionate about a special 

cause. The answer for many has been a 

Charitable Gift Annuity, or CGA. 

Through a simple contract, these 

donors agree to make a donation

(which can be cash, stocks or other 

assets) to Gundersen Lutheran 

Medical Foundation and designate it 

for their cause of choice. In return, 

the Foundation agrees to pay them a 

fixed dividend each year for the rest 

of their life. Over the past two years 

we have established 23 Charitable Gift 

Annuities, ranging from $10,000 to 

$100,000. More are in progress. 

CGA’s can be designated to any of the 

Foundation’s programs or funds, and 

may be a great tool for donors wishing 

to contribute to the Campus Renewal 

project. Many assume the main 

attraction of a CGA is the tax benefits 

and high return interest rate, but that’s 

not been my experience. The financial 

aspects are merely a bonus. 

The true benefit is the joy the donor 

receives by making a gift they would 

not otherwise thought possible, and 

knowing the good that will come of it. 

It is the joy of seeing progress made in 

research, or witnessing a young resident 

in training, or perhaps watching a new 

hospital being built to ensure the health 

and well-being of this community for 

many decades to come.

Among the more than 100 restricted 

funds established at Gundersen 

Lutheran Medical Foundation, there are 

some that I like to refer to as “workhorses.” 

These are the solid working 

funds that seem to be in constant 

motion: almost as soon as dollars come 

in through donations, they go out in 

the form of grants to support the high 

priority programs and services our 

community deserves. In other words, 

we put those dollars to work, pronto! 

The dependable nature of these 

workhorses means that Gundersen 

Lutheran departments and staff take 

us up on the invitation to request 

funding for initiatives that help make 

a difference and provide community 

health benefits. They plan and 

prioritize, design innovative programs 

and services, complete the grant 

application and review process, and 

get results with Foundation support. 

Dollars come in, dollars go out, and our 

donor’s return on investment is nearly 

immediate.

now with four of our highest priority 

funds: the Heart Institute Fund; 

the Safe Kids Fund; the Legacy of 

Nursing Scholarship Fund; and the 

Diabetes Fund. Contributions are 

needed if we are to continue the good 

work we’re doing today. For example: 

• Gifts to the Safe Kids Fund will 

enable us to expand the Teen Car 

Control Clinic program to serve 

young drivers in surrounding 

communities. 

• Gifts to the Legacy of Nursing 

Scholarship Fund help further the 

education of outstanding Gundersen 

Lutheran nurses each year. 

• Gifts to the Heart Institute or 

Diabetes Fund help support education 

and outreach programs that raise 

community awareness about risk 

factors and the latest trends in 

treatment.

Katie Fries is a senior at Aquinas High School. On September 22, 2010 her father Andy died at Gundersen Lutheran after 

a nine-month battle with cancer. Katie’s mother wanted to share this poem, saying “The ICU and oncology ‘families’ 

became part of our family, and we will always remember the dedicated and caring people whom Andy considered as 

friends. We really loved receiving his handprint from the hospital after he passed away, and it is framed on our wall at 

home. This was the inspiration for Katie’s poem about her dad.”

Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation at work 

Did you know Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation makes hundreds 

of grants each year in support of community health and wellness? 

These three examples show how your charitable dollars help further our mission. 

The YMCA Teen House has become an important resource in developing a 

community response to adolescent mental health. 

Adolescent mental health 

collaboration moves forward

Over the past year, Gundersen Lutheran and Gundersen 

Lutheran Medical Foundation have partnered with the 

La Crosse Area Family YMCA to increase the availability 

of meaningful youth development and prevention 

programming for adolescents within the community. A 

major focus has been the Teen Center owned and operated 

by the YMCA, which provides regular drop-in hours for 

youth as well as both structured and unstructured activities. 

(Editor’s note: A related story on this effort appeared in the 

Spring 2010 issue of Pathfinders.) 

A major grant, recently awarded by Children’s Miracle 

Network Hospitals ® through Gundersen Lutheran Medical 

Foundation, will help move this outreach project forward 

with the goal of reducing stigma, improving coordination 

of services, and providing assistance to those in need of 

additional mental health services. Over the next three years, 

the YMCA estimates nearly 1,000 adolescents (250–350 

year) will be served through education, connections with 

peers and adults, skill-building activities, coordinated 

mental health care and prevention programs designed 

with their special needs in mind. Ultimately, the goal is to 

improve the overall health of our community by increasing 

the number of adolescents engaged in positive activities. 

The Teen Center project includes the following collaborative 

partners: the Mental Health Coalition of the Greater 

La Crosse Area, National Alliance on Mental Illness 

(NAMI) Wisconsin-La Crosse chapter, the La Crosse 

Community Foundation and the School District of 

La Crosse, La Crosse Police Department, and the Coulee 

Council on Addictions. In-kind support is also provided by 

the YMCA and Gundersen Lutheran. 

Concussion care initiative 

expands in 2011

In 2008, a grant from Gundersen Lutheran Medical 

Foundation helped Gundersen Lutheran’s Sports Medicine 

department launch an innovative program to increase 

knowledge of the latest concussion care practices and the 

use of neurocognitive testing in teenage student-athletes. 

The ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and 

Cognitive Testing) program provides objective information 

that has not otherwise been available in the evaluation of 

brain injured athletes. Utilized properly, the program (www. 

impacttest.com) can aid in evaluating the severity of a 

concussion, help determine a safer timetable for return to 

sport and decrease the risk of re-injury. 

By the close of 2010, over 4,700 baseline tests had been 

administered to students from the 10 area high schools 

currently participating in the program. As a result of 

greater awareness by community members and improved 

recognition by trained staff, certified athletic trainers 

evaluated a record number of head injuries in the fall sports 

season alone. 

At least five more area schools are interested in 

implementing baseline testing for the 2011–2012 school 

year. In January, the ImPACT initiative received additional

grant support to expand the program 

to Gundersen Lutheran’s regional 

providers and bring best practice 

concussion care closer to teenage 

patients in more rural settings. Funding 

for this important public health 

initiative is provided by Children’s 

Miracle Network Hospitals ® .

Lutheran’s upcoming Teddy Bear 

Clinic, sponsored with support 

from Gundersen Lutheran Medical 

Foundation, is here to help. On 

Saturday, April 9, Gundersen Lutheran 

staff will be at the Children’s Museum 

of La Crosse to familiarize children 

with medical procedures and help 

them feel more comfortable about 

coming to the clinic. Children receive 

a teddy bear “patient” who joins 

them in visiting stations focused on 

everything from surgery, x-ray, and 

wellness visits to immunizations, 

asthma education, child life services, 

and more. Preparing children for what 

to expect at their next doctor visit 

can help reduce stress and anxiety in 

young patients. For more information,

Last year the stands at the La Crosse Lumberyard were packed with more than 350 “Strike Out Colon Cancer” 

supporters, including friends, family, Gundersen Lutheran staff as well as 35 survivors. Each year, this event 

continues to grow in size—both in the number of supporters and the number of survivors.

Team Vogel vs . Cancer Fundraiser* 

A weekend of events dedicated to supporting cancer research and 

families dealing with cancer 

Where: JC Pavilion, Winona, Minn. 

Events include a 5K walk/run, men’s and women’s softball 

tournament, kickball tournament, silent auction, penny auction, 

bake sale, and food for all. 

*A portion of the proceeds from these events will benefit cancer research at 

Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation, in loving memory of Joe Vogel.

4th Annual Strike Out Colon Cancer Night 

A special evening with the La Crosse Loggers and Gundersen Lutheran 

Where: La Crosse Lumberyard at Copeland Park 

Gundersen Lutheran’s Gastroenterology staff will be on hand to raise awareness 

about colon cancer prevention and honor survivors during the game against the 

Eau Claire Express.
