Themarket operates 7 days a week from 9am to 6 pm.One Tree HillIn terms of area covered, One Tree Hill is one of the largest volcanoes in the Auckland Volcanic Field, withgreat views of the Auckland City region from the summit. Of cultural significance to the Maori people,with three Maori pa’s (fort’s) of archaeological significance in the area, the hill has been a reserve since the1840’s. One Tree Hill was originally named after the single totara which grew at its summit. The totara isthe most significant tree to the Maori people as it is a very solid, tall, straight tree and its roots deep andfar reaching; pillars of Maori society are often referred to as totara. This tree was chopped down byvandals in 1852. Twenty eight years later Sir John Campbell planted a replacement, however heunfortunately chose an exotic pine as the replacement tree. This remained a bone of contention withinMaori blood until 1994 when a local took a chainsaw to the tree – hence One Tree Hill is currently a nottree hill. Sir John Campbell is buried at the summit.
