Arts & Entertainment Page 6 November 26, 2008 BOOK REVIEW Love never dies in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight MOVIE The REVIEW Duchess: A Choice Between Love and Power By ANI MINASYAN Editor-in-Chief The Duchess follows the incredible true story of a strong-willed, passionate, 18 th century English aristocrat Georgiana Cavendish played by Keira Knightley, who is arranged to marry into power to the Duke of Devonshire (Ralph Fiennes). Georgiana becomes the Duchess of Devonshire but later finds out that the price she had to pay was greater than she thought. All that is expected of the Duchess is loyalty and a male heir. However, being a strong and opinionated young By Charmaine Habana Guest Reviewer Twilight, by Stephenie Meyer, is an amazing love novel with a dash of suspense! This addictive novel revolves around the unique and powerful love between a human and a vampire. Bella’s love for Edward is everlasting, and she is absolutely determined to love him despite what he is. Isabella Swan is 17 years old and lives in Phoenix with her mother. She soon moves to a small town called Forks to live with her dad Charlie, The town of Forks is a gloomy place where it frequently rains heavily. Bella receives a car from her dad and left to look for her new school. When she finally arrives at Forks High School, she quickly makes new friends and boys are very polite to her. Someone distracts her though, and keeps her wondering: Edward Cullen. Edward is a tall, mysterious, and gorgeous 17 year-old boy who she first sees in the cafeteria. When Bella sits next to him in biology class, it seems like he tries to stay as far away from her as possible. He goes to the office to change his classes, but ends up having the same schedule. When he does not go to school for the next week, Bella becomes anxious to see him. When shows up at school again, he walks over to her and introduces himself. They being to talk frequently and become partners for biology labs. woman she cannot expect herself to abide by so many rules especially ones made by a neglectful husband whose only love are his two canine companions. As the Duchess and Duke of Devonshire, they are expected to make appearances at certain political debates or formal balls. At one of these galas, Georgiana meets a woman named Elizabeth Foster (Hayley Atwell) who is in England for a short time to escape her treacherous husband who has taken her children away. They both become fast friends but trouble will soon ensue as the Duchess fails to produce a male heir. Feeling neglected and unloved by her husband, Georgiana falls in love with a charming, ambitious, young politician, Charles Grey (Dominic Cooper), who has been madly in One day, Bella sees Edward far away in the parking lot, staring at her horrifically. Seconds later, she feels like she is being swirled around. The whole event was a blur to her. Edward then explains that he saved her but she hit her head hard due to a fast careless driver. She gets suspicious and knows that Edward was nowhere near her to save her. He tells her he was right beside her when she remembers seeing him across the parking lot. Soon after, Bella and her classmates go on a camping trip where she meets a 15 year old boy named Jacob Black. They begin talking about the Cullens and Jacob tells Bella about the legend of vampires. This is the point in the book where Bella starts to become suspicious of what he actually is. Edward tells Bella he is a vampire, and his love with her from the moment they met. Throughout the ages living in a patriarchal society, women haven’t had many roles but to marry into power, express their loyalty to their husbands, and to provide a male heir. Some women in history, however, have had the courage to step beyond their station and follow their instincts and their hearts when it came to love. whole history behind it. He almost died in 1901 and Dr. Cullen’s only way to save him was by biting him, thus turning him into a vampire. Bella is shocked and frightened at this newly found fact but she remained deeply in love with him. They soon begin spending most of their time with each other. They share many special moments including the unforgettable first kiss. A s t i m e p a s s e s by, another vampire is attracted to Bella’s blood. Danger ensues, but in the end, Edward and Bella’s exceptional love stands strong. If you love this novel, look for the continuing volumes, the sequel “New Moon”, the third volume “Eclipse”, and the fourth volume “Breaking Dawn”. If you haven’t read the book, make sure to catch the film, Twilight in theaters now. The acting by Keira Knightley is superb and truly embodies the personality and nature of Georgiana Cavendish. I highly recommend this film to anyone who is a fan of the dynamic 18 th century era of power, order, and defiance. Be sure to catch this movie in theatres and if not, it is definitely worth waiting for on DVD.
Arts & Entertainment Page 7 November 26, 2008 MAGAzINE REVIEW NYLON: a magazine for the Freaks and Geeks By MIA BOYKIN Opinion Editor Ladies and gentlemen I am pleased to present to you NYLON Magazine! This American Magazine focuses on pop culture and fashion. Like other magazines, it features beauty, art, music , travel, design, new technologies, and of course, celebrities. But what is most interesting about NYLON is that it contains an eccentricity not found in other magazines. From the cover to the last page, NYLON is filled with awkwardness that makes it distinct and unique from other magazines, like ELLE or Vogue. Only the young and up and coming stars make the cover like: Blake Lively and Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl), Mischa Barton (The O.C.), Zooey MuSIC REVIEW By AARON SAYAGO Busness Manager Chuck Wicks is a new country singer whose debut album “Starting Now” has had critical success. This talented young man has a good voice and songs that are up lifting and have positive messages. D e s p i t e u s u a l stereotypes, Wicks is not your average country singer. Granted, he is from Tennessee, but Wicks’ song can be enjoyed by anyone who truly has a good taste of music. Wicks also manages to avoid any swearing or obscure language, which is not common among many of today’s top popular artists. Although Wicks does sing about the difficult of being raised by a single parent in “Man of the House,” he does not place the blame on his parents. Instead, he just sings about how it is unfortunate that a 10 year old boy didn’t have the gift of being a kid, as he had to act like the man of Deschanel, Mary-Kate Olsen, Scarlett Johansson, Evan Rachel Wood (Across The Universe), Lindsey Lohan, Rachel Bilson , Nicole Richie, and most recently Paris Hilton. Each issue is dedicated to displaying what’s new in art throughout the world, and is often introducing new music, new actors and actresses to look out for, movies to watch, and fashions to emulate. The issue topics range from “The Denim Issue”; “The It Girl Issue”; “The Young Hollywood Issue”; to even “The American Issue,” which happens to display Paris Hilton on the cover with a headline that says “Hot Ticket! Paris Hilton for President.” NYLON has an ability to poke fun at itself, and it maintains an interest level for teenagers and young adults. Wicks currently has a hit single, titled “Stealing Cinderella” that has peaked at number 5 on the country music charts. Although it is not as popular as “Stealing Cinderella”, Wicks’ “If We Loved” is a dong that advocates peace and gives an optimistic view of the world if it’s human inhabitants could get along. However, a lot more is going to be expected from this new star. With an excellent debut album under his belt, Wick’s future looks bright. In past issues, NYLON has displayed BOOK REVIEW Madeline Albright’s Memo to the President By AARON SAYAGO Business Manager Former first female S e c r e t a r y o f S t a t e Madeleine Albright’s Memo to The President is a well written book that is informative, though provoking, and enjoyable to read. In artists and bands like The Kills, underground Sri- Lankan based artist, M.I.A, Kings of Leon, Yo Majesty, Chester French, rapper Photo: Aaron Sayago Madeline Albright during her book signing in Barnes & Nobles located at The Grove. “Memo”, Albright writes a hypothetical memo to the future president of the United States, in which she advises and warns the newly elected president of the many problems and difficulties he or she will face when he takes office. Through out the three parts of the book, Albright addresses many of America’s current issues, such as a failing economy, a horrible war in Iraq, immigration, and same sex marriage which the future president will have to undertake. As she analyzes the problems, Albright Teyana Taylor, Santogold, Be Your Own Pet, and other great underground a r t i s t w i t h interesting and unique music. With articles that are titled Dude, Where are my pants?, V a n t a s t i c Voyage, Music Sounds Better With You, and British Invasion, there is no way this m a g a z i n e will ever get b o r i n g . This would even be an excellent read for SSR (Sustained Silent Reading). If you’re are a fashionista, who is an art loving, book reading, trendsetting, pop culture, highly openedminded geek who loves shares the knowledge and wisdom that she has obtained from studying the U.S.’s history and from her personal experience as the first female secretary of state from1997 to 2001. Although she has experiences to share, Albright also acknowledges that unseen events can and will occur in the future that no human can truly be prepared for. A l b r i g h t c o n s t a n t l y r e m i n d s t h e f u t u r e president to be strong and to defend the ideas of the U.S. constitution, which he swore to do on his inauguration. Albright’s “Memo” is a book that should be read bt anyone trying to get a true “insider’s look” in the white house. Although she was in a very high position in the national government, Albright is able to get her points and arguments across to the majority of Americans. This book can be helpful to a young adult learning about how the U.S. government works, and informs the general public of what an American President’s job is really like, with all of it’s power, prestige, and pain. Whether one is a historical buff or just an average citizen, one can learn about the successes and mistake of past and current president.
