The 24th Annual
AIDS Walk-Los Angeles
was a huge success. This
year, the event raised over
$3 million, adding to the
$64 million raised over the
last 24 years. Over 30,000
individuals walked the 6
miles, all for the common
cause of finding a cure for
AIDS and HIV. The pre
walk events, ceremonies,
and sign-ins began at 8
a.m. The walk officially
began at 10 a.m. and lasted
until 8 p.m.
Students in the Gay-
“Are they forfeiting?”
No, the Wildcats walked
Turn in those Lunch Applications!
By Alex Jung
and Jeena Chang
Staff Writers
Title I (One) is based
on students who qualify
for lunch tickets. Every
year, our school qualifies
for government money. We
need buildings, supplies,
and basic necessities that
the government already
provides. The government
does not provide us with
field trips, furniture, etc.
Title I money provides
us with educational
opportunities to better our
students’ experience at
school. Basically, Title I
is additional money for our
school that we can spend
educationally toward our
students. More money
means comes from the
more applications that
are received for the lunch
tickets. Last year, $857,731
was received from the
federal government for
our title one savings. The
money that we received
this year goes toward the
next school year. Title
I started in 1965, when
the United States federal
government decided
to improve our school
environments to better
our students’ educations.
This is called the federal
program. In 2001, it was
revised to, “No Child
Left Behind,” which are
basically the same idea. It
is the federal support for
local schools, and only runs
in the United States from
Pre-Kindergarten up to all
High Schools and possibly
some universities.
By applying you get
free meals at school, free
admission to the SAT, ACT
college entrance tests, free
tutoring services, reduced
prices on AP tests, and
free college applications.
students about this matter
again.
Be Right Back: Out for Lunch!
By KRISTEN BLANC
A & E Editor
H a v e y o u e v e r
wondered what it would
be like to walk off campus
to your favorite fast food
restaurant and eat the most
delicious lunch? Well,
many high schools in
the Los Angeles Unified
District are allowed
to! I don’t understand
the difference between
those schools and ours! I
personally don’t think off
campus lunch should be
opened to freshmen and
sophomores, but certainly
to juniors and seniors.
Allowing off campus
lunch to juniors and
seniors would alleviate
overcrowding of the
cafeteria during lunch. As
it is, students have only
about 37 minutes to wait
in line, buy their food,
and clamber through the
crowded cafeteria to find
a seat. This is why many
students decide not to eat
lunch for concern of not
having enough time to buy
and eat their food before the
bell rings. Even if a third
of the seniors and juniors
opted to leave campus for
lunch, this would greatly
ease the overcrowding
of the cafeteria and
maybe students would be
encouraged to eat their
lunch.
Many parents and
administrators have argued
over the safety issues
concerning off campus
lunch. One of their main
concerns are not having
control of the students’
activities off campus. This
is a rather weak argument
considering that don’t need
to go off campus to make
drug deals, graffiti, or take
part in other reckless acts.
According to principal
Dana King in Millbrook
Congratulations
President-elect
Barack Obama !
High School, “Accidents
most often occur when
students are coming to
school in the morning
and leaving at the end
of the day.” Taking this
statistic into consideration,
students driving during
lunchtime isn’t much of
an issue.
Allowing students
to go off campus can be
offered as a privilege rather
than a right, a privilege
that could be taken away if
requirements are not met.
Perhaps a minimum GPA
or low number of absences
and tardies would serve as
the requirements for being
granted this privilege.
These motivations will
in turn grant the students
the much coveted wish of
off-campus lunch, while
at the same time allow
them to strive for higher
grades and become better
students.
Car Crashes: The No. 1 Killer of Teens, can be prevented
By ANI MINASYAN
Editor-in-Chief
The first thing that most teenagers
look forward to when they’re sixteen is
getting their driver’s license. No longer
would they have to wait around for their
parents to pick them up from school or
leave early from a party. They leave when
they want because they have the power
to drive wherever and whenever they
please. All this freedom is long awaited
and thought about frequently but what
is not thought about, are the risk factors
associated with owning or operating a
vehicle. According to Centers for Disease
Control, car crashes are the leading cause
of death for teens in the United States and
accidents while driving cause 36 percent
of all deaths in this age group.
Teenagers are more likely to be
involved in fatal car crashes than adults.
This is because teenage drivers tend
to underestimate hazardous driving
situations and are less able to recognize
dangerous situations.
This can be said mostly for male
drivers. It is extensively known that male
drivers between the ages of 16 and 25 as
opposed to female drivers are more likely
to engage in reckless behaviors such
as ignoring safety rules and especially
speeding. This is one of the main reasons
why insurance companies raise prices for
young male drivers. This
is not to say that female
drivers are not at risk.
Although men are three
times more likely than
women to be killed in car
crashes, researchers at the
Johns Hopkins Schools
of Medicine and Public
Health have found that,
when the total numbers
of crashes are considered,
female drivers are involved
in slightly more crashes
than men.
Teenagers are easily
distracted by the use of cell
phones, eating, or smoking while driving.
For female drivers, applying make-up is
the key issue of distraction.
All these activities can have the
drivers fined for careless driving. There
are many distractions on the road outside
without the drivers creating distractions
inside of the car.
Since teenagers tend to ignore safety
rules, car accidents involving teenagers
are usually a result of lacking a seat belt.
Regardless of whether the driver is an
adult or an adolescent, they are constantly
reminded to wear a seat belt not only
because it is a federal offense but also
because it can be the line between life and
Photo: blog.wired.com/cars/2007/11/how-old-is-old-.html
File photo of a car crash.
death. Data suggests that failure to wear
a seat belt contributes to more fatalities
than any other single traffic safety-related
behavior. 63 percent of people killed
in accidents are not wearing seat belts.
According to Newsweek magazine,
wearing a seat belt is suggested to be the
single most effective thing that can save
lives and reduce injuries on roadways.
Although teenagers are not old
enough to drink they still engage in
such risky behaviors and drive under the
influence. Driving under the influence
can affect any driver regardless of their
age. Statistics show that more than 10
percent of eighth graders, 22 percent
NEW TEACHER PROFILE
Mr. Rubin, a most unusual math teacher
By AARON SAYAGO
Business Manager
Mr. Michael Rubin
is an Algebra, Geometry,
and Algebra 2 teacher
who is new to Fairfax
High School. As many of
his students know, Rubin
brings his wittiness and
humor to math, which he
sees as vital to one’s life
and success.
Prior to teaching here
at Fairfax, Rubin worked
at Banning High, and
San Pedro High school.
He has also worked as
an attorney, computer
network administer,
p l u m b e r, c a r p e n t e r,
e l e c t r i c i a n , f o r k l i f t
operator, purchasing agent
and salesman.
His jobs and personal
interests have led to travel
abroad to such countries
as Mexico, Canada, Israel,
Egypt, and the Netherlands.
As a result, Rubin has a
wide knowledge of various
subjects, which makes
starting and sustaining a
intriguing conversation
with him a easy and fun
thing to do.
Rubin is married and
has three sons and one
daughter. The youngest
attends kindergarten and
the oldest is a high school
senior. He also has a pet
dog that helps him deal
with the daily stress of
school.
During his free time,
Rubin enjoys doing home
repair, scuba-diving,
racquetball and softball.
Generally, Rubin does not
like to waste his time and
will try new things, such
as fine dining.
Through his extensive
connection to Fairfax
of sophomores, and 26
percent of seniors report
binge drinking. This shows
that drinking begins at
a very young age and
is expected to continue
throughout the time teens
receive their driver ’s
license. Young people are
much more susceptible to
alcohol induced driving
accidents. According to
dontserveteens.gov, recent
reports show that drunk
drivers aged 16 to 20
are twice as likely to be
involved in a fatal crash
as drinking drivers who
are 21 and older. Teens who drink at a
young age in addition to driving while
intoxicated can not only get arrested to
the full extent of the law but also can be
involved in fatal car crashes.
Good Bobby is Good Political Theater
By Mia Boykin
News Editor
Good Bobby i s
a powerful play about
the early political life of
Robert “Bobby” Kennedy.
The play, written by Brian
Lee Franklin, starts off at
the brink of a cultural and
social change in America.
The audience is first
introduced to Bobby as a
hard working, but highly
disorganized and confused
man trying to find his
way in life, despite the
expectations of his father
and family name.
Throughout the play,
the audience can relate
to Bobby Kennedy’s
character, as he fights what
is expected of him, and
finds his role in life.
T h e h i s t o r i c a l
references, such as the
Civil Rights Movement,
the Vietnam War, and
political figures such as
Martin Luther King Jr.
can be relatable to older
audiences, but Bobby’s
constant struggle to free
himself is something to
which younger generations
can relate.
It reaches out to a
broad variety of people
despite any age group,
Le Club Français va trés bien!
By Carolann Mota
C’est incroyable!
After being absent for three
years, the French Club
is back at Fairfax! The
club is officially known
as Le Club Francais and
is sponsored by French
teacher Madame Sampah-
Stewart. The French
Club that used to be at
Fairfax was unfortunately
t e r m i n a t e d b e c a u s e
not many people were
interested in joining the
club. “At the beginning of
school, students expressed
interest in the French
Club and wanted to bring
it back,” said Madame
Sampah-Stewart.
Many students have
been enrolling in French
classes here at Fairfax
and the club is important
for students because they
can learn beyond what
they study in their class
periods. For example,
they can learn much more
than the mechanics of
the language and learn to
appreciate other cultures
in the process. “After its
absence of three years, I
really wanted to bring back
the French club because
I think it is essential
not only for the study
and appreciation of the
French culture but for
the appreciation of other
cultures as well,” said Ani
Minasyan, club president.
French Club is a place
for students to express
their interests and embrace
the beauty of the French
Lee Franklin, a lifetime
member of the Actor’s
Studio, who not only wrote
the play, but is also the
main protagonist, Bobby
Kennedy. “I was always
told there was physical
comparison between Bobby
and me,”said Franklin,
who was surprised that
there has never been a
play written about Bobby
Photo courtesey of GAA
Bobby (Franklin) talks with with his mother, Rose (Lisa
Richards) in his parent’s home, while his father, Joseph (
Steve Mendillo) ) listens in the background.
or the historical Kennedy
family. Franklin’s powerful
performance, as well as the
cast of Good Bobby, has
productive with discussions
on French Culture and
language and other foreign
aspects of the world. There
is a variety of music in the
exploration of not only
French music but music
from all over the world.
The club is also a great
way to meet others who
share the same passion for
the language.
Even though the club
is still new, they have
a variety of plans and
projects for the school
year such as foreign movie
nights, field trips, dinner
at French restaurants,
fundraisers, community
service, and much more.
Language is a beautiful
and powerful tool that can
be used to your advantage.
Use this opportunity to
take the full advantage
of Le Club Francais. The
club meets every Friday at
lunch in Room 217.
driven several people in
the audience to tears and
has ended the play with
standing ovations. “This
is a good way for people to
learn that time of history,”
said Franklin, referring
to the radical changes of
the 60’s. “What’s most
important is that the
audience leaves with the
question of finding what
makes them happy, even if
it defies their obligations,”
said Franklin who wrote
this character, because
it was someone who he
related to in life. “My
favorite moment of the
play is the ending, though
it’s more painful to do, but
it’s where a person has to
tell their parents of all their
grievances.”
In the past, Greenway
Court Theatre has hosted
many great plays, such
as Butterflies of Uganda,
School House Rock, and
some student written
plays through the Multi-
program such as, Citizen
Art Alliance is proud of the
success of Good Bobby,
and has even extended
its production date from
There is truly no
a strong-willed, passionate,
18 th century English
love novel with a dash of
suspense!
This addictive novel
revolves around the unique
and powerful love between
a human and a vampire.
Bella’s love for Edward
is everlasting, and she
is absolutely determined
to love him despite what
he is.
Isabella Swan is 17
years old and lives in
Phoenix with her mother.
She soon moves to a small
town called Forks to live
with her dad Charlie, The
town of Forks is a gloomy
place where it frequently
rains heavily. Although
Charlie, they quickly
begin to become close.
When she finally
arrives at Forks High
School, she quickly makes
new friends and boys are
very polite to her. Someone
distracts her though, and
keeps her wondering:
Edward Cullen.
Edward is a tall,
mysterious, and gorgeous
17 year-old boy who she
first sees in the cafeteria.
When Bella sits next
to him in biology class,
it seems like he tries to
stay as far away from her
as possible. He goes to
the office to change his
classes, but ends up having
the same schedule. When
he does not go to school
for the next week, Bella
becomes anxious to see
him. When shows up at
school again, he walks
himself. They being to talk
two canine companions.
As the Duchess and
Duke of Devonshire, they
are expected to make
appearances at certain
political debates or formal
balls. At one of these
galas, Georgiana meets a
woman named Elizabeth
Foster (Hayley Atwell)
who is in England for a
short time to escape her
treacherous husband who
has taken her children
away. They both become
fast friends but trouble will
soon ensue as the Duchess
fails to produce a male
heir. Feeling neglected and
unloved by her husband,
Georgiana falls in love with
a charming, ambitious,
young politician, Charles
Grey (Dominic Cooper),
who has been madly in
One day, Bella sees
Edward far away in the
parking lot, staring at her
horrifically. Seconds later,
she feels like she is being
swirled around. The whole
event was a blur to her.
Edward then explains that
he saved her but she hit
her head hard due to a fast
careless driver. She gets
suspicious and knows that
Edward was nowhere near
her to save her. He tells
her he was right beside
her when she remembers
seeing him across the
parking lot.
Soon after, Bella and
her classmates go on a
camping trip where she
meets a 15 year old boy
named Jacob Black. They
begin talking about the
Cullens and Jacob tells
Bella about the legend of
vampires. This is the point
in the book where Bella
starts to become suspicious
of what he actually is.
Edward tells Bella
he is a vampire, and his
love with her from the
moment they met.
Throughout the ages
living in a patriarchal
society, women haven’t
had many roles but to
marry into power, express
their loyalty to their
husbands, and to provide
a male heir. Some women
in history, however, have
had the courage to step
beyond their station and
follow their instincts and
their hearts when it came
to love.
whole history behind it.
He almost died in 1901
and Dr. Cullen’s only way
to save him was by biting
him, thus turning him
into a vampire. Bella is
shocked and frightened at
this newly found fact but
she remained deeply in
love with him. They soon
begin spending most of
their time with each other.
They share many special
moments including the
unforgettable first kiss.
A s t i m e p a s s e s
by, another vampire is
attracted to Bella’s blood.
Danger ensues, but in the
end, Edward and Bella’s
exceptional love stands
strong.
If you love this novel,
look for the continuing
volumes, the sequel
“New Moon”, the third
volume “Eclipse”, and the
fourth volume “Breaking
Dawn”. If you haven’t
This film directed by
Saul Dibb is filled with
love, passion, betrayl, and
sacrifice. The acting by
Keira Knightley is superb
and truly embodies the
personality and nature of
Georgiana Cavendish. I
highly recommend this
film to anyone who is a fan
era of power, order, and
defiance. Be sure to catch
NYLON: a magazine for the Freaks and Geeks
Ladies and gentlemen
I am pleased to present to
you NYLON Magazine!
This American Magazine
focuses on pop culture
magazines, it features
beauty, art, music , travel,
design, new technologies,
and of course, celebrities.
But what is most interesting
about NYLON is that it
contains an eccentricity not
found in other magazines.
From the cover to the last
page, NYLON is filled with
awkwardness that makes it
distinct and unique from
other magazines, like
ELLE or Vogue. Only
the young and up and
Chuck Wicks is a new
country singer whose debut
album “Starting Now” has
had critical success. This
talented young man has a
good voice and songs that
are up lifting and have
positive messages.
D e s p i t e u s u a l
stereotypes, Wicks is not
your average country
singer. Granted, he is from
Tennessee, but Wicks’
song can be enjoyed by
anyone who truly has a
good taste of music. Wicks
also manages to avoid
any swearing or obscure
language, which is not
common among many of
today’s top popular artists.
Although Wicks does sing
about the difficult of being
raised by a single parent
in “Man of the House,” he
does not place the blame
on his parents. Instead, he
just sings about how it is
unfortunate that a 10 year
old boy didn’t have the
gift of being a kid, as he
had to act like the man of
Deschanel, Mary-Kate
Olsen, Scarlett Johansson,
Evan Rachel Wood (Across
The Universe), Lindsey
Lohan, Rachel Bilson ,
Nicole Richie, and most
recently Paris Hilton.
Each issue is dedicated to
displaying what’s new in
art throughout the world,
and is often introducing
new music, new actors
and actresses to look out
for, movies to watch, and
fashions to emulate. The
issue topics range from
“The Denim Issue”; “The
Hollywood Issue”; to even
“The American Issue,”
which happens to display
Paris Hilton on the cover
with a headline that says
“Hot Ticket! Paris Hilton
has an ability to poke fun
at itself, and it maintains an
interest level for teenagers
and young adults.
except for a comeback
from University. All of
a sudden the Wildcats
scored a touchdown
catching up with 19 points
Nora mentioned, “They
did pretty well but had
ups and downs. They were
very strong on defense.”
Manager Arnel Abeleda
is also very proud of their
performance and stated,
“They really improved as
the season progressed.”
At the beginning of
but Matt Bowen took care
of that when he scored a
touchdown for Fairfax,
35-19.
By the end of the
fourth quarter, the Lions
scored another touchdown
and so did Uni but the
Wildcats didn’t have a
chance, this was Fairfax’s
game. They came and
the season, Hicks was
concerned due to the
six varsity players who
graduated making her the
only starter left from last
year’s varsity team. As
captain she was doubtful
of whether or not she
could help lead the team
to success. Even though
delivered.
“I feel like I played
a great game but overall I
feel that our team played
together and that’s why
we won” said quarterback
Loran Lewis Jr. Fairfax
played well and won
homecoming. So what’s
next for the Lions? They’re
on their way to playoffs.
Western League as a whole
was much stronger this
year, Fairfax ended the
season with a 6-4 record,
which placed them third
behind Palisades and
Venice.
Hicks is emotional
about leaving the Fairfax
volleyball team and will
greatly miss the team.
However, Hicks and Flores
plan to continue playing
volleyball in the future
and have in fact been
offered to play for several
schools such as Cal State
Monterey Bay and West
LA College. “I love you
guys, and thanks for giving
us seniors such a great
season!” said Hicks to the
team. Flores happily shared
her advice to the team and
future players, “If you
really want to win, work
hard and make volleyball
your first priority.”
CHEER OR DIE! The
hunt for a coach is over!
After the disappointing
departure of Ms. Corina
started while attending
School. “I love it. I love
the adrenaline, the rush,
impressing the crowd,”
said Coach Ray.
“I’m trying to make
a difference by lifting the
standards as cheerleaders
and show that it’s also
a man’s sport,” said the
passionate coach of his
goals in cheerleading.
His plans for the rest of
the year are to stay and
continue coaching the girls
and go to competitions,
and hopefully nationals.
The bond between the
team and their coach is
great. They love to cheer
and so does he. “I love
them, they work hard,
listen, and together we’re
gonna take it to the top”
said coach of his team.
Cheerleading isn’t
just dance routines and
stunts. It’s a sport that takes
physical as well as mental
toughness. Coach Ray has
brought cheerleading to
a whole new level. The
already ambitious squad,
Practicing long and hard
four times a week for four
hours starting sixth period
and ending at five o’clock,
“They are willing to do
more dangerous stunts”
said Coach. Ray. What
can we expect from the
cheer squad this year?“Just
extreme cheer” said the
determined coach who’ll
hopefully take the girls to
cheerleading nationals.
F a i r f a x ’s c h e e r
squad has always been an
enjoyable team to watch at
games and pep rallies and
now thanks to Coach Ray
they will go farther than
they’ve ever gone before in
cheer history and achieve
much more. Spirited and
full of enthusiasm, he truly
is a role model for the
team and for cheerleaders
everywhere.
