The development and growth of HaysMed is the direct result of the passion, commitment,
and inspiration of the people who bring our mission to life. Our dedicated staff, physicians,
and volunteer board members give their time, energy and heart to ensure our community
receives access to excellent medical care.
And you – our community – support our mission as well. Through the power of your
gifts, your friends, neighbors and family members are made well again. You assist HaysMed
with the funding of equipment, patient care programs, technology, and capital
improvements. Our continuing excellence and innovation in care would not be possible

For twenty years, Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy (HOCM) was part
of every day life for Larry Dreiling of Hays. HOCM is a congenital disease in
which the heart muscle is thickened, obstructing blood flow and preventing the
heart from properly functioning. HOCM is perhaps most well-known as a leading
cause of sudden cardiac death in young athletes.
In April, Larry had a bout of atrial fibrillation, a symptom of HOCM. The
attack was his fourth in ten years, but the second in four months. Larry’s cardiologist,
Dr. Christine Fisher at the DeBakey Heart Institute, was concerned.
His condition had worsened to the point that he needed a complex operation, a
septal myectomy, in which the thickened muscle is cut out of the heart. He was told a defibrillator implant might also be
necessary. Because the incidence of HOCM is low, affecting less than 0.5% of the US population, Dr. Fisher referred Larry
to the Cleveland Clinic, ranked one of the top cardiac care hospitals in the nation.
Due to the high risk nature of the procedure, Larry wanted to have his affairs in order before traveling to Cleveland. Larry
reviewed his estate plans with his attorney. Family members were named in his living trust as well as a few charities, including
the Hays Medical Center Foundation. “Ellis County is the best place to live in the rural Midwest,” said Larry. “Central to
that is DeBakey Heart Institute. The doctors in cardiology, the facility and the fact that Hays Med is present in a relatively
isolated area all allow me to have quick access to quality healthcare.”
In August, Larry underwent the intensive surgical procedure and soon had a defibrillator implant as well. During recovery,
Larry’s nurse practitioner let him listen to his heart. Instead of the deep whooshing sound of a damaged heart, he could
hear nothing but the smooth sound of a healthy one. “I cried tears of joy,” said Larry. “After all the years of going through
this, I have a healing heart.”
Throughout the process, Larry was impressed with the communication and coordination between the two facilities. Larry’s
faith in Dr. Fisher carried him through to Cleveland. While being highly skilled, Larry noted, she's also highly compassionate
and a great educator. “She empowered me to understand my medications.” In Cleveland, the physicians recommended
a drug that Larry had already tried. “I knew exactly what kind of drug I needed,” said Larry. “They looked at the medication
Dr. Fisher had prescribed and agreed it was a good one.”
Back in Hays following surgery, cardiac rehabilitation at HaysMed was next. All exercises are medically supervised with
continuous monitoring of heart rate and rhythm. “Participants learn to overcome their fear of exercising and become confident
in their ability to safely engage in physical activity for a lifetime," stated Larry.
Larry could not be more pleased with the entire process of mending his heart. “HMC is always there for me and ready to
take care of my needs. Being part of a smaller facility is really great. The staff at HaysMed is very professional and just as
capable as the fabulous nurses in Cleveland. They could compete anywhere.”
Remembering HaysMed in his will was an easy decision for Larry.
The Gift of a Healing Heart
“When I walk or run on the fitness trail at HaysMed,” he said “I think of my mother who was president of the auxiliary
when the trail was established. She volunteered 15,300 hours between 1976 and 2005 when she died. As time has gone
by, I’ve come to realize there is a purpose here. If we can do good things in the community, let’s do it. It’s not painful to
do what I can.”

The Power of Your Gifts
Every gift makes a difference to the patients at HaysMed.
The cumulative effect of all gifts, both large and small,
can restore a seriously ill person to good health.
Unrestricted gifts allow us to make the most effective
use of resources, helping meet the hospital's current
needs and priorities. Equipment and programs funded
through unrestricted gifts this past year included:
Audio/tympanometry equipment to screen
children’s hearing. More than 4,300 patients
will be screened over the coming year.
A three-day course for health care providers
that focused on improvement of evidencebased
practice at the bedside, patient data
collection, communication of patient
assessment data, and the documentation
of care for the clinically changing patient.
Prescription assistance to protect young
women from cervical cancer.
Free CPR Anytime training for the public.
More than 100 participants received a CPR
Anytime Kit that included a manikin to
practice CPR skills at home.
CPR Infant Anytime kits were given to all
new parents at the Hays Women’s Center.
CPR Anytime kits were provided to the Ellis
County EMS department to train all Ellis
County sixth grade students in CPR.
A new public address/sound system for the
Center for Health Improvement. The
system serves the needs of the Pound Plunge
program, Senior Health and Fitness Day,
Joint Care Reunion, Red Cross Blood fairs
and many other events held at the facility.

The power of your gift….to impact the health of the
community. The Annual Drive Through Flu
Vaccination program highlights our commitment to
helping people stay healthy. The Centers for Disease
Control website lists an annual flu vaccination as the
single best way to protect against the flu. Hays area
physicians join the Foundation to fund this important
community wellness program.
The power of your gift…to change the life of a child.
The audio/tympanometry equipment in pediatrics
allows for identification of children with possible
hearing deficits at the earliest possible stage. The
screening is especially important for young children
when hearing deficits can interfere with normal speech
and language development, communication and with
the ability to learn. Joyce Heffel, LPN, tests the
hearing of a pediatric patient.

HaysMed Associates Give Generously
The 2010 HaysMed Associate Campaign was a huge success raising
more than $57,000 to support projects at HaysMed. Associates
were able to surpass the campaign goal of $55,000 thanks to loyal
support from a large number of Associates who matched or increased
their donations from last year and more than 120 Associates who
donated for the first time. The United Way Campaign at HaysMed
quickly followed. Again, HaysMed Associates were able to surpass
the campaign goal and continue the tradition of generous support
for the United Way. We thank this valuable group of people for
investing their time, energy and resources in the needs of our region.

A charitable gift annuity is an excellent way for you to receive a
steady source of income and help provide quality healthcare for
western Kansans in the future.
A charitable gift annuity is a simple agreement between you and
the Hays Medical Center Foundation. In exchange for an irrevocable
gift of cash or securities, the Foundation agrees to pay one or two
annuitants a fixed sum each year for life. The payments are backed
by the general resources of the Foundation.
The older the designated annuitants are at the time of the gift, the
greater the fixed payment the Foundation can agree to pay. In most
cases, part of each payment is tax-free, increasing each payment's
after-tax value. Payments are usually made in annual, semiannual,
or quarterly installments.
