contain no declared missing values. MTUS users need to declare missing valuesif they choose to do so before running their analysis.1.7 Data preparationThe World 5.53 and World 5.8 Versions of the harmonised MTUS datasets arerestricted to the aggregate (summary) version of the time-use surveys. TheMTUS includes survey, demographic and socioeconomic information aboutrespondents (hereafter called diarists) and their households alongside theaggregated time-use variables. Each row case in the W5.53 and W5.8 filesrepresents one 24-hour time diary. For those studies where respondentscompleted more than one diary, individual diarists appear on a separate row foreach diary they completed. The World 6.0 files include the sequence information, though this version willonly be created for a limited subset of datasets as the process of conversion ismore cumbersome, especially in the case of older time use surveys whereinformation is reported for uneven intervals. In the World 6.0 episode files, eachrow case represents one change of main activity, secondary activity or location ina diary. Where the diarist completed more than one diary, the episodes of thesubsequent diary or diaries follow the episodes of the first diary. As this file islarge, only the identifiers, age and sex are included in the World 6.0 file alongsidethe diary information. Users will need to match the World 6.0 files with thecorresponding World 5.8 file for the additional background variables. Before beginning the actual conversion, users should undertake three steps toensure maximum data quality.DATA PREPARATION STEP 1 – Check alternative options for the MTUSbackground variables to ensure that you are using the option with the cleanestprofile compared with other reported results and the least missing data. If thereare options and one is better than others, the choice should be documented inthe conversion syntax. In some cases, combinations of original variables areneeded to create the MTUS variables.DATA PREPARATION STEP 2 – Apparently missing main activity time in diariesis not necessarily missing. The point of the diary is to collect information aboutwhat people are doing at any point in time. Diarists sometimes do not fill in themain activity column – creating the appearance of missing data, but fill in otherinformation elsewhere in the diary that nonetheless indicates their activity andallows us to properly code the time period. We should recognise that elements of
