The alliance’sbelief is that, together, thecompanies in the alliance havetremendous knowledge about agriculturecommodities and marketing, crop insurance, property and casualtyinsurance, agronomic needs andfarm management needs and providean ag supply consortium thatoffers flexibility when making purchasesfor the farm.Midwest Agro Alliance is a companythat strives to keep the customer’soperation first and the companyneeds second. Midwest AgroAlliance is comprised of four agriculture-focusedbusinesses: RiskManagement Commodities Inc., AgProducers Insurance Agency Inc.,Horizon Ag Consulting and SagamoreAg Source LLC.Risk ManagementCommoditiesRisk Management Commoditiescontinues to move forward, joiningthe experience of other “risk managers”to provide a holistic approachto risk management and farm productionmarketing. RMC haslearned and implemented innovativestrategies to secure marginsand mitigate risk in these changingand volatile times. RMC can helpidentify risk areas and then managethose risks with the most appropriatestrategies for each farm’s situation.RMC was founded in 2001 to providepersonal marketing assistanceand risk management alternatives. It offers comprehensive consultingservices, full-service commodityfutures and options brokerage and adaily email that covers corn, beans, wheat, hogs, cattle and other “peripheralinfluences” that are relevant. The founders of RMC recognizedin the very beginning that everyone’smarketing needs are differentand they pride themselves on recognizingthese differences and providingpractical risk managementalternatives. As RMC grows, the company putsthat experience into evolving productsand services. On the consultingside, RMC helps producers identifyand quantify risk areas and thensuggests marketing alternativesthat best address each individualsituation. RMC has evolved from abasic brokerage firm to a consultingfirm. RMC’s employees are tirelessin their efforts to avoid bias and hiddenagendas. The bottom line is that RMC hasthe experience to identify and mitigaterisk in each farm operation.Midwest Agro Alliance2218 Main St., Suite ALafayette, IN 47904(765) 423-1385(866) 837-9027www.mwaalliance.comThe services offered by RMC arederived and developed by researchand growing experience level.RMC continually analyzes thechanging agricultural environmentand implements improvements continuously. The goal is to provide recognizablevalue to each operation, whether through consulting, hedgingor a daily email update.Volatility remains historicallyhigh. RMC has the experience andthe resources using volatility to analyzerisk, as well as market andprice potential. RMC’s philosophy isif they don’t know the answer, theywill find someone who does. RMCcan turn to the other companieswithin Midwest Agro Alliances.Ag Producers InsuranceAg Producers Insurance is aninsurance agency that specializes incrop, property and casualty insurancethat was founded in 2011. Thecompany provides insurance in Indiana,Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Kentuckyand Ohio. The agency is different from otheragencies because it interacts withMidwest Agro Alliance. That allowsthe company to take an entirely differentview of crop insurance coverageby understanding how to tiecrop coverage to a farm marketingplan. Ag Producers Insurance hasdeveloped strategies to manage thecoverage of crops by knowing howcrop insurance involves current agronomicissues, as well as how it tiesinto marketing grain.Crop insurance is an importantrisk management tool. Ag ProducersInsurance agents’ understandingfrom a marketing and agronomicperspective will help provide peaceof mind in knowing that the customerhas the best possible coverageprotecting their crops. The company’s agents grew up onfarms, which gives them a solidfoundation in understanding cropproduction and crop protectionneeds. The company’s property andcasualty insurance division takesthe approach of providing coveragethat farmers need as a family protectinggenerations to come. Withthe high cost of farming today thereis a significant amount of money onthe table.Maintaining contact with farmerson a daily basis keeps agents awareof current changes happening in themarket place. The company believesthat by keeping an open communicationstrategy it can quickly bringany concerns to the attention of customersand keep customers insuredproperly.Ag Producers Insurance agentshave a combined 20 years of experiencein the insurance industry.Darryl Lane has been insuringcrops for more than 16 years. He hasinsured many acres throughoutthose years in six different states.Brad Farrer works as a commoditybroker and crop property andcasualty insurance agent, givinghim unique and beneficial outlookswhen it comes to analyzing the farmoperation.Sagamore Ag SourceSagamore Ag Source is an ag supplyconsortium that was foundedthree years ago by Jim Hedrick anda group of farmers who wanted alternativeoptions when purchasinginputs. Sagamore Ag Source startedin Indiana with just a few membersand now has membership in sixstates with slightly more than 50members.Sagamore Ag Source does notfunction like a traditional “buyinggroup.” One key difference betweenSagamore Ag Source and traditionalbuying groups is that Sagamore AgSource members are not required tobuy through the group. The design of the group is to provideinput market information to increasemember buying power. TheSagamore Ag Source model providesfarmer members with products, services and market information toimprove their purchasing effectivenessand competitive advantage.Sagamore Ag Source was formedin response to farmer request for betterinput market information andadditional tools to manage their inputvolatility. Sagamore Ag Sourcealso provides market information tohelp members track product priceand supply trends in the U.S. andworld marketplace.Growers who are interested inimproving their input risk managementthrough better market informationand alternative access sharea common interest with SagamoreAg Source membership. Commercialqualitypre-cut floor mats also areavailable for many tractors.Newer tractors have more sophisticatedcab components, so vacuumformingequipment now is used formany sections of pre-molded plasticmodule cab kits.To make cab insulation replacementeasier for farmers, there nowis a new installation tips video availableon the company’s website.Improvements consistently areintroduced, and customer commentsare taken seriously. No “smoking” of corn occrred, plants being knee-high at theime.Because landlords were uneasybout the amount of anhydrous loss, hey had requested application ofnother 50 pounds of anhydrousfter corn planting. The fields hadeen strip-tilled last fall with 150ounds of nitrogen per acre.Control strips were left with nopring-applied nitrogen. Yieldhecks this fall will show if nitrogenad been lost and if spring-addedmmonia improved yield.Interest in cover crops and hopeor a more sustainable crop rotationre causing some interest in revivngwheat in the Midwest. To thatnd and because it has customers inhe Dakotas, aNH3.Company hasxpanded its interest to the sideressingof wheat with anhydrousmmonia. There are some practical probems, and success is by no meansssured. Yetter and aNH3.Companyre working together in an attempto create an anhydrous injectionevice for narrow rows. One result from aNH3.Compny’sexperiment is the conclusionhat higher rates of anhydrous cane applied by sidedress openers forach row than with split-row openrs.Michael Litterly of aNH3.Company stands beside the aNH3.Company researchtoolbar. By sidedressing several hundred acres with its three-point hitch researchtoolbar, aNH3.Company proved the capability of the Equaply-Liquimatic system. In hindsight, that conclusion ispainfully obvious and even seemssimplistic. However, many thingsaffect application rate, and the experimentshowed, in this case, rateis limited by the design of the injectiondevice.Allegedly, there is a recentincrease in the dead area of the Gulfof Mexico. While anhydrous ammoniais likely to be the whipping boy,it is the most stable form of nitrogen. The use of sidedressing for moreof anhydrous usage will minimizerunoff from fields over winter andearly spring. This and other efficiencysteps can turn down the heatwhen bureaucrats look for moredrastic controls, which they soonwill do.aNH3.Company’s toolbar utilizeda non-pump version of the Equaply-Liquimatic system — sidedress typicallygets no extra benefit from abooster pump when a half-inch hosecan be used for knife lines. The toolbar had a prototype variableorifice manifold instead of aservo valve to control individual rowrates. Row equality was verified byEquaRow, a new product fromaNH3.Company that monitors flowto each knife by use of pressuretransducers.New ProductsThe aNH3.Company RowBot variableorifice manifold has been delayeduntil later in 2013 because ofa change in concept.Originally, the RowBot had multipleversions with varying numbersof outlets for different situations. While the RowBot prototypes performedvery well, they had manyconfigurations, one with 28 outlets. For inventory simplicity and toallow multiple manifolds for swathcontrol, aNH3.Company has switchedto a standard manifold with eightoutlets. This change makes RowBotmore compatible with Trimble FieldIQ control.A downside to this approach isthe requirement that multipleEquaRow manifolds must be synchronized.Hardware and softwarefor that now is under construction. The N-Saver injector now is availablefrom stock for high pressureinjection of N-Serve. Operators nowhave the option of applying N-Serveby the older method of pints per acreor the more scientific ratio to theamount of anhydrous.Farmer-injected N-Serve has theadvantage of bulk purchase savingsand paying only for N-Serve used, none being returned to the tankfarm. The main advantage is thatthe N-Saver can inject into a highpressurepumped stream of anhydrous, allowing N-Serve to bypassmost components of the applicationsystem.Nurse Tanks and HosesContinuing the attempt to quantifywhat happens between thenurse tank and the toolbar,aNH3.Company has purchased aspecially configured tank fromAmerican Welding and Tank. Thissummer and late fall, aNH3.Company will conduct pressuredrop profile tests at various temperatures, flow rates and piping configurations. Two research toolbars areequipped with multiple pressuretransducers. A custom computerdesignedprogram to analyze andstore data in real time will eliminatethe difficult collection of informationon the fly in a tractor cab.American Welding constructed a1,000-gallon anhydrous tank with1.5-inch bungs for both top and bottomoutlets. To overcome the problemof rust wearing out the bottommounted valve, the company put a4-inch standpipe upward from thebottom bung. Both outlets have thehighest flow outlet valves available, the Continental NH3’s A-1809-BFV.Comparison of pressures wherethe feed hose attaches to the inlet ofthe application unit will show anybenefit that the bottom draw mighthave.Similarly, application tests withvarious hose and fitting sizes willshow any benefit from larger lines.Anecdotal evidence suggests thatthe benefit of a bottom outlet with1.5-inch hose and fittings will bemind-boggling.

PAGE 18 — PARTNERS IN AGRICULTURE — ILLINOIS AGRINEWS — Friday, July 26, 2013Farm financial potholes you can’t afford not to fixPEORIA, Ill. — It’s difficultnowing if you’re on the right trackanaging the finances of your farmhen you’re not a financial specialst. Here are the most common errrsthat ag finance specialists haveeen farmers make:■ Failing to plan — or to keephe plan on the radar: Manyarmers get into trouble by not havnga financial plan or by not followngtheir plan.Without a plan, it’s hard to tell ifou’re making progress year to year.t’s hard to tell if you could be doingomething better or differently toake a positive impact. On the flipside, if you take theime to work through a forwardookingprojection, but don’t stick tohe plan, that’s not very helpful forou, either.Know your plan going into therop year. Figure out your cost tarets.Try to stick to the numbers andecord anything that’s different.Unexpected opportunities willome up, and if you keep your planccurate, you can use it to judgehether you can take advantage ofhose opportunities based in yoururrent situation. The main thing iso keep the plan in the forefront ofour mind, always on your radar.■ Purchasing land withoutrunning the numbers: Land ispretty pricey right now, consideringthe history of land prices. Some of your biggest decisionshappen in the land market. If youare in the market for land, how doyou know what size of down paymentto put on a land purchase? It all depends on the financial situationof your operation. If you putmore cash down, then you might beable to cash flow the purchase better.Or maybe you need to finance itall with a fixed rate loan and takeon a larger payment. Running thenumbers using different scenarios isa good way to help you determinewhat you should do.It helps to look at the ratios whilethinking about your overall goals foryour operation. That way you canwork on your expansion plans andstill keep a cushion available for anyfuture unknown opportunities orneeds.■ Paying high cash rent —just to have more acres: What’stoo much” to pay for cash rentepends quite a bit on the soil typef that ground and how much youan grow on it.One farmer locked in a multi-yearWater Street Solutions601 SW Water St.Peoria, IL 61602(309) 680-1200www.waterstreet.orglease for $350 an acre that’s going tobe in the red because of the farm’ssoil type. He wasn’t thinking abouthow it was going to fit into the overallplan for his operation. He just saw an opportunity togrow, so he signed the lease. Later,he started to think it might havebeen a bad idea.He was right. But it was too late. The land needs to be profitablefor a lease to make sense. A higherlevel of cash rent isn’t always a badthing. You just need to look into whetherit will make sense financially foryour operation before you make anykind of a decision or sign any leases.A forward-looking feasibility studycan show you different financial scenarioswhen you’re pondering rentingsome new ground.■ Spending too much onmachinery: You need machinery tofarm, but spending money on machineryto avoid taxes isn’t alwaysthe best strategy.Sure, there are benefits to buyingnew equipment, such as efficiencyand comfort. But there are costs tocarry that equipment on your balancesheet, too.Because it’s a depreciating asset, more equipment doesn’t mean youmake more money. In fact, it mightcost you opportunities if you don’thave enough working capital available.Ask yourself a few questions tocheck that you’re making machinerypurchases for the right reasons.Look at the numbers a little moreclosely.Do you really need that piece ofequipment for your operation?Shiny new equipment can be hard toresist — it looks good and it cansave you time. But is it right for your operationnow? In the future? No one enjoys paying taxes, butwe all have to do it. And think of itthis way: It means you’re makingmoney.■ Becoming too highly leveraged:Leveraging your operation ata high level can limit you in manyareas that could otherwise help you.Working capital lets you lock ininput costs when discounts are beingoffered. If there’s a prepay discountavailable on seed, but nofinancing available, you lose out onthat opportunity if you don’t havethe cash.Or maybe the operation has debtthat you’d like to refinance. It costsa little bit to do that, but it ultimatelycould be better for your operation.Taking advantage of these littleopportunities can really add up.You’ll want to pay attention toyour debt and available cash ratios.Farmers can get themselves intotrouble here, especially whenthey’re in growth mode.An opportunity to buy land orcash rent some more ground comesup. They seize the deal, but nowthey need to borrow more at thebank.Always weigh the costs of expanding. And, certainly, don’t expand atall costs.■ Not understanding yourcrop insurance policy: If youfarm any irrigated ground, you maythink that because you don’t havevery much yield risk, you don’t needto purchase multi-peril crop insurance. But crop insurance also is designedto protect revenue risk, notjust yield risk. You can integrateyour policy with a marketing plan toguarantee revenue. Many farmers could benefit froma demonstration of how crop insuranceand a marketing plan work togetherto protect profit. Even withirrigated ground, crop insurance isnot a wasted cost for you becauseyou don’t usually have yield losses. It can have a positive impact onyour operation — especially if youhave an understanding of how touse it with a marketing plan.■ Thinking that these levelsof profitability are normal: We’veexperienced some really good timesin recent years. But farmers wholived through the ‘80s will tell youthat this is not always what thebusiness of agriculture is like.Younger farmers, in particular, may be lulled into thinking thatthese levels of profitability in farmingare normal. If circumstanceschange, you could lose land or evenyour whole operation if you’re notpaying attention to your numbersand overall financial situation. If you’re a member of the youngergeneration, talk with the older generation.Find out what the averageincome of a farm was in the past andwhat the interest rates were likethen.Look at farming from a morelong-term perspective. Pay attentionto your farm’s financials and thinkabout what-if scenarios. If you’reprepared for circumstances tochange, you’ll be a lot better off ifthey do.■ Not knowing the cost breakdownof your inputs: You may feelthat you don’t have much controlwhen it comes to the cost of inputs. But you still need to know and keeptrack of where your money is goingwhen it comes to seed, chemicalsand fertilizer. When you know yourcosts, you can manage these decisionsin the best way for your overalloperation. Also, you can get a little morecontrol over the cost of your inputs ifyou are able to pay for them in cash. For example, you might be able toget a discount on your fertilizer ifyou are able to pay with cash whenthe opportunity arises.Good working capital allows youto take advantage of such discounts— letting you control the cost ofyour inputs a bit more.■ Failing to communicatewith your banker: We’ve seencases where farmers have hurtthemselves by not communicatingproactively with their bankers. Thefarmer might make a big purchase— land, a tractor, a pivot — and putit on his operating note.He intends to pay for it later, andif he can’t do that, to get a term loanfor it. But the banker has a differentview. He now looks at that farmer asa credit risk because he overspenton his operating note. Now, he doesn’t want to give thefarmer a term loan at all. Thefarmer gets stuck with a lot of extramoney on his operating note — forpurchases that should never havebeen on it in the first place. The key to avoiding such a situationis good communication. Tellyour banker up front when you wantto make a purchase. Get a term loanset up then — instead of just puttingthe purchase on your operatingnote.Tell the banker how much moneyyou’re going to put down and howmuch you want to finance. Thinkahead and you can easily avoid thisfinancial pothole. For assistance in navigatingaround any of these farm financialpotholes, contact Water Street Solutionsat (309) 680-1200 or www.waterstreet.org.

Wehad two customers use the LF systemthis year for variable rate applicationand both were extremelyhappy with the performance andflexibility,” Kelley added.“TruAG is an exciting addition toour product lineup. They manufactureseed tenders, fuel trailers andtoolbars. They continue to developtheir Avenger line of NH3 bars andwill be adding liquid fertilizer bars,as well. TruAG designs and buildstheir equipment in nearby West Lafayette,Ind., so delivery costs arelow and parts are readily available. That is a distinct advantage whenour operating windows are short.”Javens has been with the businessfor more than 30 years. I think our customersappreciate that extra attention.”Kelley Engineering also strives tocontinually improve its systems sothat its customers can achieve thebest application possible.“We now include a magnet inevery NH3 system to minimize rust,a filter in-line to protect the orificein the heat exchanger, and we willbe including an improved filterstarting this fall between the tankand the bar. And, as always, westrongly encourage the use of a hydraulicshutoff in every system as abackup to any electric shutoffvalve,” Javens said.Walt Kelley has been a Chem-Farm dealer for more than 40 years. This past year was the most activein recent memory.“Two years ago, at the request ofa customer who wanted to carrymore starter fertilizer on theirplanter tractor, we designed andbuilt a bracket to mount a set of270-gallon SS Chem-Farm tanks onthe front of a John Deere 8360R. Itwas challenging because there isn’tmuch to mount to on these newertractors. However, we were able tocome up with a design that is flexibleenough to fit the 8300 seriesthrough the R series, and the customercan take the bracket andtanks off in 15 minutes or less,” WaltKelley said.its customers with the solutions they need and supportafter the sale. Walt Kelley has been a Chem-Farm dealerfor more than 40 years.“We also have a bracket for CaseIH row crop wheeled tractors,QuadTracs and soon the Row CropQuad. Most of the time, we are usinga set 250-gallon tanks that the customerhas stored for years. However,we have mounted a set of new 500-gallon tanks on a John Deere 4WD.”Chem-Farm stainless steel tanksare durable, easy to clean out andtheir transport width is less in mostcases. As the demand for precision aghas grown, so has the need for interestedand qualified people to selland service the products. With thatin mind, Kelley Engineering addedEric Post as a precision ag technicianthis past year.“Eric has already learned a lotand continues to go through trainingwith our many products lines,”Kevin Kelley said. “He was really anasset to us this past spring as it wasvery hectic. PARTNERS IN AGRICULTURE — ILLINOIS AGRINEWS — Friday, July 26, 2013 — PAGE 25Byron Seeds is sincereabout helping farmersROCKVILLE, Ind. — It’s aboutime farmers got a break. We’ve hadt all — drought, heat and cool, wetprings. It seems like everything haseen stacked against the farmerately. Here’s a perfect example of what Iean. There’s a field of corn not tooar from my place. It’s really goodookingcorn, too, considering everyhingwe’ve been through this year. The stand is nice and even, greennd ready to tassel, except that it’standing in a foot of water. By theime the Wabash River is backhere it belongs, it’ll be too late forhat field.Farming is a high-risk business.hink about this — farming is one ofhe few businesses that involve suchlarge annual investment in timend money with so little control overhe outcome. It’s the lack of control over therocess that increases risk. Theore control you have, the less risks involved. So, to reduce risk, you need toain control, and control is a productf careful planning. The problem ishat most people plan for normalather than plan for the exceptionsand, as a result, they get caughtgain and again in a cycle of catchp and recovery.Every year starts with such promseand then ends in a scramble forurvival. How do we break the cycle? We can’t control factors such ashe weather or market prices, bute can diminish their effect. Herere a couple of ideas:■ Long-term planning — Everyuccessful business has a businesslan, and you probably do, too, buthat’s your plan for that 80 behindhe house or the 40 across the road? It’s important that you have alan in place for every field, somehingthat is providing high-qualityorage and building soil at the sameime. Improving the soil helps reucerisk by improving performance.Crop rotations help with both –nd, no, corn and beans aren’t benficialcrop rotation. That’s justurning resources and increasingisk.Your local Byron Seeds dealerould be glad to help you build ahree- or four-year plan for yourields. That brings me to my secondoint:■ Cover crops — Last year’sdrought was devastating. I talked toByron Seeds LLC775 N 350 ERockville, IN 47872(765) 569-3555a farmer who averaged 116 bushelsper acre last year when the rest ofthe county averaged about 35 bushelsper acre. His reason for success? He’d beenplanting cover crops and practicingcrop rotation for the last four years. He’d improved the soil to the pointwhere the humus content was holding9.5 inches of water. Most farmers say that cover cropswon’t work for them, that it’s notpractical with their present system. We can help. Byron’s would be gladto help you choose the right covercrops for your situation. There are other benefits, too.Need extra forage this fall or nextspring? Great. Cover crops can dothat for you.Did you know that some of thetrace minerals that your next cropneeds will leach right through thesoil unless there is humus to hold it?That’s right — some of the micronutrientscan only stay in the soil bybinding to humus. Cover crops areimportant.■ Diversify — Corn silage isgreat. It’s such an easy, one-cut system, and it produces a quality feedthat’s high in energy with a highneutral detergent fiber digestibility.Good, but what about those yearswhen corn takes a beating from heatand drought? Can you afford theloss in yield and feed quality?Forage sorghum helps reduce therisk and improve success. Foragesorghum has a third to half thewater and fertilizer requirements ofcorn. After 85 degrees, corn starts toshut down, while forage sorghumcontinues to photosynthesis up to104 degrees. Once again, plan to diversifyand you’ll reduce risk.So it comes down to planning. Wecan help you with that. We’re dairyfarmers, row croppers and livestockproducers. It may be that in sharing our experiencewith you, we can help youput together a program that willhelp you reduce risk and take backcontrol. It’s nice to catch a breakfrom time to time, isn’t it?B65011

Our RTKservice can use Verizon or AT&T’sLTE technology, which allows thecustomer to choose what signal isbest for their area.”Other companies use 900 MHz or450 MHz radios to broadcast corrections. This method is largely limitedto the line-of-sight from the basestation to the rover in the field, thusproducing a limited range.Bane-Welker’s private, singlebaseline network is the largest inthe state of Indiana, covering moreBane-Welker Equipment48 E.
