The jagged skyBy John MillichapIn his series of brooding, black-and-whitephotographs, Toxic, Lin Shu takes on thecultural and historical weight of the landscapein Chinese art. Made between 2009 and2010 the works are depictions of some of China’smost famous mountains yet heavily distorted,either through deliberate blurring, multiple exposuresor by intervention by the artist on the originalnegative film. The results offer a variety ofeffects in form and tone in which the pictures canappear almost totally drained of light or crowdedby lacerating peaks of inky black. As a resultthey are as much an exploration of the psychologicalas they are of physical topography.As an undergraduate Lin studied oilpainting at the Art Institute of Jimei Universityin Xiamen (1999-2002) and took up photographytowards the end of his studies. At first this was apurely practical decision and following gradua-1

As a result, the painter’s eye can bedetected in his use of the camera to create dramaticabstractions of light and dark. Such qualitiescan be seen in further series by Lin such asNeon (2011), which are studies of scholars’ rocksthat are hand tinted in florescent greens, bluesand reds. “I don’t deny that my study of paintinghas an inevitable impact on my photography,”he says. “Painting and photography canget very tangled for me. Sometimes I deliberatelytry to combine the two and sometimes I wantto keep them apart. What’s most important isto find the right approach at the right moment.”In shooting the images for Toxic Linused a vintage Hongmei HM-1 120 folding cameraof a type mass produced in China during the1970s and 1980s. The camera allows the use ofmedium-sized 6x6 film, which provides muchhigher resolution but has a tendency to leaklight through its body and concertina bellowsleading to streaks and blurring. These chanceeffects gave Lin his initial inspiration and inprogressive images he sought ways to increasethese distortions, both on location and in thedark room where he sometimes developed multipleimages in a single photograph or alloweddrops of fluid to remain on the negative duringexposures. The images in Toxic are therefore partdesign and part calculated accident.Lin made six trip for this series travellingto some of China’s most famous mountainranges, including Mount Lu in northern Jiangxi2

Lintherefore orientates himself within a long tradition.Nevertheless, his works are a sharp departurefrom the pastoral tranquility favoured bypainters of the Anhui School or the romanticmysticism of the great Ming dynasty masterShitao (1642-1707) whose renditions of YellowMountain are among the most revered in Chinesepainting. (Lin admits he carried a book ofShitao’s paintings with him on his trips). Instead,in Lin’s images of Yellow Mountain suchas Huangshan the rock face appears to trembleas if shaken by a violent earthquake – the resultof multiple exposures of a single image. Elsewherein the more subdued Huangshan II thescene is under exposed to give a flattening effectwhile in over-exposed images such as Lushan Iand Lushan II the mountain is barely visible asa dark mass seen through baleful grey clouds.The weight of history bears down heavilyhowever. The landscape in Chinese art hastraditionally served as a proxy for political andsocial debate and in taking on the subject Lin’sworks cannot help but engage with this legacy.For the literati of classical China the naturalworld expressed cosmic order and a model for aharmonious society in which each found a predestinedplace. Much later, photographers of theNew Wave in the 1970s and 1980s found in it anelemental purity and antidote to the politicalrepression of the immediate past and the chaosand displacement of the near future.
