SHAKER LAKES GARDEN CLUBPRESIDENT’S LETTERVOLUME 118JULY/AUGUST 2010Summer Greetings Ladies,It is very appropriate that the GCA Centennial Tree project has been a focus this past year. Much ofmy gardening has consisted of constant oak seedling removal. I am sure I could have supplied everyone of the members in our zone with at least one. Instead of oak trees we voted at the annualmeeting to provide apple trees for Chagrin Falls Park Community garden and the CBG Green Corpsgardens.I am very honored to become the 51 st president of Shaker Lakes Garden Club. Ann Whitney will bea hard act to follow. Her strong leadership the past two years has kept us on a steady pace as a veryhealthy GCA club. I will do my best to lead us towards our own 100 th anniversary in 2015. Just torefresh your memory, we were established in 1915 and joined the GCA in 1920.Wasn’t the flower show spectacular? VOLUME 118PAGE 42010 GCA Annual Meeting: “New Jersey: The Garden State”It was May but Anne Ginn and I drove through crazy snow in the mountains of Pennsylvania for a brief stopand tour of New York City’s Wave Hill and the Central Park Gate at 105 th Street before continuing on to NewJersey and the national GCA convention. There we were welcomed by Governor Chris Christy who attested tothe heft nationally of the GCA. A major award was then presented to Joan Dye Gussow, a proponent of eatinglocally. We were regaled with reports by all committees of the national GCA –sometimes amusing but alwaysbrief and to the point. Workshops were held focusing on the practical matters of running a garden club andsuggestions were made by all participants at a round table discussion that included representatives of everyzone. After a day of meetings we were rewarded with cocktails, dinner and a stunning view of Manhattan andthe Statue of Liberty backlit by fireworks. After more awards the next morning which presented an insight intothe far reach and influence of the GCA , we were treated to garden tours of Princeton and its environs.Princeton is a special place as Princetonians will tell you and members of the hosting GCA clubs did a bang upjob in their New Jersey tomato red pashminas. More dinner with big jewelry followed that evening. The nextmorning Anne and I wound our weary way back to Cleveland with the help of GPS and with a betterunderstanding of the scope and history of the GCA.—Margaret KrudyLadies of Shaker Lakes Garden Club—Your 2010 directory will be published in September.
