joy is FIERCELY PROTECTIVE.BMW passive Safety features. 1Don’t let the term mislead you. There’snothing passive about BMW’s “passivesafety” design – or how quickly thisimpressive array of safety featuresresponds to an accident.BMW’s passive safety system starts withthe very architecture of each vehicle. Anextremely rigid occupant “safety cell,”reinforced by strong roof support, channelsthe impact force around all occupants; frontand rear ends are designed to deform toabsorb energy. Additionally, in the event ofa side impact, special hooks lock the doorsto the body for added protection, thenunlock after the impact. When sensors detect a severe impact, BMW’s“intelligent” safety system deploys the mosteffective combination of airbags, safety-beltpretensioners and more, to help protect youand your passengers. Afterwards, the doorsare automatically unlocked and the four-wayhazard flashers and interior lights are switchedon to summon emergency aid, and the fuelpump is switched off. In a severe accident, any or all of these may be deployed:Advanced front airbagsAdvanced airbag technology determines ifand how forcefully to deploy each front airbag, based on accident severity and safety-beltusage. If the seat is not occupied, or if a forcethreshold is not met, the airbag is designednot to activate.Door- or seat-mounted side-impact airbagsIn case of a side impact, side-impact airbagsdeploy quickly for added protection.Active Knee Protection 1These airbags deploy from the bottom ofthe dashboard to provide added protectionfor the knees and legs of the driver and frontpassenger.Head Protection System (HPS) 1In the event of a side impact, BMW’s awardwinningHead Protection System helps keepthe driver’s and front passenger’s heads fromhitting hard objects, and from being hit bycertain objects penetrating the windows.Used in conjunction with side-impactairbags, this firm inflatable curtain helpsprovide outstanding protection.BMW Assist 1If your vehicle is equipped with the BMWAssist system, in the event of a severeaccident, our enhanced Automatic CollisionNotification service automatically transmitsyour vehicle’s location and crash informationto a response specialist, who then speaksto you to determine if you are alright. Thetransmitted data is also assessed todetermine if there is a risk of severe injury.A second response specialist requestsdispatch of the appropriate emergencyservices to your location.1Not all features available on all models.
