PREFACE
This issue of ECS Transactions incorporates papers presented at the Tenth
International Symposium on Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC-X), held in Nara, Japan, June
3-8, 2007. This symposium was sponsored by the SOFC Society of Japan and The
Electrochemical Society, Inc. The previous symposia in this series have been held in
Hollywood, Florida (1989); Athens, Greece (1991); Honolulu, Hawaii (1993); Yokohama,
Japan (1995); Aachen, Germany (1997); Honolulu, Hawaii (1999); Tsukuba, Japan
(2001); Paris, France (2003); and Quebec City, Canada (2005). The objective of this
symposia series is to provide an international forum for the presentation and discussion of
research results and developments related to high temperature solid oxide fuel cells
(SOFCs). The organizing committee selected Nara city, the ancient capital of Japan in the
8 th century, as the site for the commemorative 10 th symposium. This symposia series is
now recognized worldwide as the most important event devoted solely to solid oxide fuel
cells; the next symposium in this series, SOFC-XI, will be held in Vienna, Austria,
October 4-9, 2009.
Research and development of solid oxide fuel cells is increasingly being promoted as
evidenced by the large number of projects throughout the world; commercial realization
of SOFC systems is obviously drawing near. This increasing interest is reflected in the
fact that SOFC-X was the largest in terms of number of papers in the SOFC symposia
series. This issue of ECS Transactions contains 302 papers presented at the symposium
from 24 countries in Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America. To
accommodate this large number of papers, the organizing committee had to introduce
parallel oral sessions, in addition to four poster sessions, for the first time in this
symposia series.
The papers in this issue cover all aspects of solid oxide fuel cells including
development of systems, materials for different cell components and their processing and
performance; cell, stack and system designs, fabrication and testing; and performance
modeling. These papers taken together provide up-to-date comprehensive information on
the status of the SOFC technology and related activities.
The papers are for the first time being published through the new ECS Transactions
system which has proven very useful for corresponding with authors, and for editing,
reviewing and publishing of a large volume. The editors thank Drs. Natsuko Sakai and
Xiao-Dong Zhou, and Professors Tatsuya Kawada and Tatsumi Ishihara, for their
assistance in reviewing, and Mr. John Lewis, Mr. Toshiaki Matsui, Dr. Ryuji Kikuchi,
and Ms. Sheila Bennett for their assistance in editing and compiling this issue. Financial
support from the SOFC Society of Japan; High Temperature Materials, Battery and
Energy Technology divisions and the Dokiya Memorial Fund of The Electrochemical
Society, Inc.; Nara Convention Bureau; and Hosokawa Powder Technology Foundation
is greatly appreciated.
