How do you practice?• Flashcards!– Purchase or make with your child!

GOAL: FLUENCY• Ability to recall basic (one-digit) facts in threeseconds or less– 50 problems in two minutes and thirty seconds– 100 problems in five minutes– Accuracy?? Aim for 100%! Keep practicing if itsless than 95%


Why?• Common Core State Standards in<strong>Math</strong>ematics require the following:– By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sumsof two one-digit numbers.• 1+1=2 9+9=18– By the end of Grade 3, know from memory allproducts of two one-digit numbers.• 1x1=1 9x9=81


Okay…but really, WHY whenwe have calculators??• <strong>Math</strong>ematical literacy is becoming more andmore important in our global society.• If you “sound out” math facts or rely on acalculator for basic facts, you will miss the bigpicture!

What tips can I use to help mychild?• Be positive about math!• Let your child know that everyone can learn math.• Let your child know that you think math is importantand fun.• Point out the ways in which different family members usemath in their jobs.• Be positive about your own math abilities. Try to avoidsaying "I was never good at math" or "I never liked math".• Encourage your child to be persistent if a problemseems difficult.• Praise your child when he or she makes an effort, and sharein the excitement when he or she solves a problem orunderstands something for the first time.


REMEMBER!• Your child will be bringing home a weekly <strong>Math</strong>Log, called Refrigerator <strong>Math</strong>--just like theweekly Reading Log you are used to.• Please work with your child nightly on mathfacts and turn in the completed Refrigerator<strong>Math</strong> log each week!Refrigerator <strong>Math</strong>
