<strong>Spartanburg</strong> Public Safety DepartmentPolice Services<strong>Spartanburg</strong> Public Safety DepartmentPolice ServicesOffice <strong>of</strong> Victim ServicesOur Victim Specialists provide support services to crime victimsand witnesses in the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Spartanburg</strong>. They providemany services to include crisis counseling, referrals to partneringcommunity agencies for shelter and pr<strong>of</strong>essional counseling.They served over 960 victims in <strong>2012</strong>. They also coordinate our“Day <strong>of</strong> Prayer” and “Shop with a Cop” as a support to crimevictims.Our Victim Specialists work to protect and preserve the rights<strong>of</strong> victims as prescribed by law.Traffic EnforcementInjuries and property damages from traffic collisions cause significant economic losses to families and communities.Traffic collision related injuries and deaths are preventable. Enforcement <strong>of</strong> traffic violations and driversafety education are effective interventions for improving safety on our roadways. Some <strong>of</strong> our focus areas forenforcement and education are:• Speeding• Impaired drivingTotal• Distracted driving2005Collisions• Aggressive driving• Child restraintSpeeding4265• Seat beltCitationsCitizens AcademyThe Citizens Academy is a program intended toprovide citizens in our community knowledge <strong>of</strong> theinner-workings <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Spartanburg</strong> Public Safety Department.The program is designed to develop partnershipswith community members and the PublicSafety Department. Information is exchanged to givestudents a better understanding <strong>of</strong> how they can bestutilize the services that are <strong>of</strong>fered by the <strong>Spartanburg</strong>Public Safety.The Public Safety Department implemented theCitizens Academy program in April <strong>of</strong> 2004, the mostrecent class ended December <strong>of</strong> <strong>2012</strong>. Since the inception<strong>of</strong> the Public Safety Academy, approximately380 people have graduated. Several graduates have made a career choice to seek employment with the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>Spartanburg</strong> and are currently serving as police <strong>of</strong>ficers.Citizens who attend the Academy will receivetraining in the following areas: <strong>City</strong> Fire Divisionoperations, <strong>Spartanburg</strong> County E-911, <strong>Spartanburg</strong>County Detention, <strong>Spartanburg</strong> County Courthouse,Property and Evidence, Tactical Operations(SWAT), Narcotics Unit, K-9 demonstration, Traffic,and Forensics.Riding alongside a police <strong>of</strong>ficer, donning a firefighter’sprotective gear, and touring the facilitiesare intense experiences and is highly recommendedby past graduates.SPO Charles Moore made 52 DUI arrests in <strong>2012</strong>.Special EventsSpecial Event PermitApplications ReviewedDoes not reflect hours <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers working normal schedules or hours<strong>of</strong> fire personnel.Public Safety staff plays a vital role in safety planning and providing securityfor many <strong>of</strong> the Special Events that take place in our city. Our goal isto work with other <strong>City</strong> departments, event planners, and vendors to ensureprevention <strong>of</strong> and protection from incidents that could endanger the safety <strong>of</strong>the general public.
