The TR13 incorporates high-lift,low-drag aerodynamic effects with a single-cylinder 450-cc motocross engineand Hoosier 18.0 x 7.5 - 10 R25B tires. The aerodynamic package includesfront and rear wings with adjustable flaps and a full length undertray. Althoughthe lift seems quite large for a Formula SAE car, Terps Racing verified 540-lbtotal lift at 60 mph on their TR11 car. The TR13 includes a much more effectiveundertray and rear wing. The performance benefits of incorporating aerodynamiceffects were evaluated and justified using lap simulation studies, field testing,CFD modeling, and competition experience. Design choices for the engine, framestructure, front suspension, steering, and seating were largely dictated by thelayout of the wings and undertray diffusers. Track width and wheelbase weredetermined using the lap simulations and CFD modeling. Lastly, horsepower, weight, and fuel economy tradeoffs were analyzed using the lap simulations tofurther evaluate design decisions.Northwestern Formula Racing (NFR) is competing at Formula SAE Michigan withNFR13, the team’s fourth vehicle. The car was guided by simplicity in design, manufacturing, and assembly. As a relatively young team, NFR has beenfocusing on increasing the reliability of their vehicle and the knowledge of theirteam. This year’s car was made possible by the motivation and passion of all40 team members.BRAKE : Wilwood GP320 front, PS1 rearBSCD : 96mm/62mm/1/449ccCOOLING : C&R double pass, NACA ductDRIVE : Dual chain with jackshaftELECTRONICS : PE ECU3, Mars Labs TitanENGINE : Honda CRF450XFR/RR TRACK : 45in./45in.FRAME : SpaceframeFUEL SYSTEM : EFIFUEL TYPE : 93 octaneMATERIAL :MPD : 8400MPT : 7800OLWH : 134"l,54.5"w,52"hSUSPENSION : Unequal length A-armsTIRE : 10" Hoosier R25B 7.5"x18"UNIQUE :WEIGHT : 610lbs with 150lb driverWHEELBASE :BRAKE : Custom Disc BrakesBSCD : 95.5mm/62.8mm/Single Cylinder/450ccCOOLING : Water-CooledDRIVE : Chain DriveELECTRONICS : MoTeC M400 ECUENGINE : Suzuki LT-R450FR/RR TRACK : 1245mm/1219mmFRAME : TIG-welded 4130 Steel Alloy SpaceframeFUEL SYSTEM : Fuel InjectedFUEL TYPE : 100 OctaneMATERIAL : AluminumMPD : 9000MPT : 7800OLWH : 2693 mm/1429 mm/1123 mmSUSPENSION : Double unequal length A-Arms.
