Thisjoyful anniversary is also an occasion to look back on half a century of common history, growingpartnership and profound friendship between our two countries.This publication by our Embassy gives an overview of the excellent and manifold relations thathave developed over the past 50 years between the Republic of Korea and Switzerland. Theyinclude most sectors of public and private life: politics, economy and trade, education, science andtechnology, environmental issues, culture, and tourism.스위스와 한국이 외교 관계 수립 50주년을 맞이하게 되었습니다. 이러한 경사는 지난 50년간 양국이 공유한 역사, 양국 간 심화되고 있는 파트너십, 깊어지고 있는 친선 관계에 대해 돌아볼 수 있는 기회이기도 합니다.주한 스위스 대사관에서 준비한 이 책자는 지난 50년 동안 한국과 스위스 사이에 발전해 온 훌륭하고 다채로운 관계에 대해 개괄적으로 보여줍니다. 양국간 교류는 정치, 경제, 무역, 교육, 과학, 기술, 환경 이슈, 문화, 관광 등 대부분의 공공 영역 및 민간 영역에 걸쳐 이루어지고 있습니다.이 모든 분야에서 가장 중요한 것은 국민들이 양국 관계를 어떻게 활용하느냐가 될 것입니다. 양국간 협력은 정부간의 접촉에만 한정되지 않습니다. 사실이에 못지 않게 중요한 것은 비즈니스, 과학, 예술 및 문화 교류에 기반한 양국 국민들간의 접촉과 교류입니다.In all these areas, what counts most is what people make out of it. Cooperation between twocountries is not only based on the contacts between their governments. In fact, also essential are thecontacts and exchanges between citizens resulting from business, science or exchanges in art andculture.이를 더욱 촉진하기 위해 저희는 오늘날까지 한-스위스 관계의 성공 스토리를 만들어온 당사자들에게 이 책자를 통해 각자의 이야기를 해주십사 부탁했습니다. 그 분들의 기고문과 이야기를 읽어보면서 오늘날 양국 및 국민들의 깊은 관계에 대한 이해를 높일 수 있을 것입니다. 물론, 이 책에 실린 내용 외에도 많은 이야기가 있었지만, 한정된 지면 때문에 모두 실지는 못했습니다. 참여해 주신 분들 모두에게 양국 관계 발전에 기여해 주신 점, 또 자신들의 이야기를 소개하여 이 책자가 발행될 수 있도록 도와주신 점에 대해 진심으로 감사의 말씀을 드립니다.07To embrace this idea, we want to give voice to Korean and Swiss personalities who have been partof this Korean-Swiss success story up to the present day. Reading their testimonials and stories allows us to better understandtoday’s strong ties between our countries and people. I would like to thank all of them sincerely for their contributions in real lifeand for having contributed to this publication by telling their story. In fact, there would have been a lot more stories to tell butunfortunately, not all could have been incorporated into this book.In my almost four years of being the Swiss Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, I had the privilege of meeting a number ofgreat people - both Korean and Swiss – who were living or working in Korea or Switzerland. They are part of this steadily growingnetwork, and all of them deserve our sincerest thanks.Like most visitors and diplomats coming to Korea, I was deeply impressed by Korea’s achievements over the past few decades:building up a solid democracy, creating a very successful economy to become a global economic player, investing stronglyin education through the state and families, and opening up to new cultures and life trends. In other words, Korea developedsuccessfully into a very modern country while still maintaining a rich culture and history.All these impressive achievements have helped to strengthen the ties with my country. Swiss people, living in a very old directdemocracy characterized by its neutrality, have had the privilege to live in peace for a very long time. Korean people could notenjoy this privilege, as the Korean Peninsula is still today exposed to significant military tension.Next year, in 2013, there will be another important anniversary: 60 years of the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission (NNSC).Switzerland has actively contributed to this body through a permanent presence in the DMZ in order to observe the maintenanceof the Armistice Agreement and therefore stability on the Korean Peninsula.I am deeply convinced that there is still a lot of potential for developing and intensifying the relations between our countries andpeople. The commemoration of 50 years of diplomatic relations is a good occasion to take stock of the past and our ongoingexchanges.
