14BUILDING THE DREAMWINDOWSRoof Types and OrientationWhen you’re installing VELUX Roof Windows in a project,it’s important to think about the position of the building andthe rooms. This will have an impact on the type, and number,of windows needed. We would always recommend a minimumof 20% glazed area to floor space.IN A LOFT SCENARIOThere are a number of daylightsolutions available for loft conversions.Simply think about your roof pitchand roofing material. Then considerthe size and shape of your loft space. This will help you decide how manywindows you need to install andwhere to put them. Before you beginconstruction, think about where youwant the light to fall in the room.Above a desk, perhaps? Make sureyou position your windows in thebest possible place to achieve whatyou need.FOR OPEN CEILINGSFor ceilings that slope to the roofline, there are limitless combinations forcreating your own light filled room. You simply choose the type ofwindows you want and decide whereyou want to put them. It’s worthconsidering what kind of light youwant before you start construction.Strong, variable light throughoutthe day? Position your windowon a South-facing roof. Constant, indirect light – perhaps for a homeoffice? Place your window on aNorth-sloping facing roof.InspirationWINDOWSWorking out what kind of light is right.A South-facing window will capture the most sunlightduring the day (morning and afternoon). Whereas aNorth-facing window will receive no direct sunlightat all – but it will still capture a constant weaker lightthroughout the day. An East-facing window will catchthe rising sun, and a West-facing window will capturesunlight from early afternoon onwards.Once you’ve worked out all these factors for your project, you’ll be able to make the most of our windows by placingthem in a such a way that they help you maximise theavailable light.LORESAdding a single roof windowwith a splayed internal liningcan bring useful extra lightinto a room.CREATE A LIGHT SHAFTIf you have an upstairs or singlestorey room with a flat ceiling, you can construct a light shaftto cut through the loft and letlight into the room below.ON A FLAT ROOFOur flat Roof Windows are perfectfor existing flat roofs or flat roofextensions, bringing daylight anddrama to the area below. There isalso an electrical INTEGRA ® versionso you can let in fresh air at thetouch of a button.INSTALLATIONFLASHINGSATRIUMUSE A SUN TUNNELAdding roof windows on oppositesides of a room catches the lightas the sun moves across the sky.Just because you have a flat roofdoesn’t mean you are restricted. Why not create a stunning featureby using a combination of ourwindows to create an atrium.A Sun Tunnel lets natural lightinto even the smallest, darkestinternal corridors and cupboards. For practical advice on selectingthe right tunnel for your project visitwww.velux.ie/inspirationBLINDS
