Child is chuckling there, clutching her shearers, film’s history runningthrough her fingers like soft milk. The way Child explains her filmmaking process is equally applicableto her poetry: “In Prefaces I wanted to use found images as aresource, a dictionary, to de-acculturate our ‘image bank’—to breakthe bank image in fact, to redistribute, to structure a pulse-fieldpulsethrough which and with which permutations act exchange.”To unfold her project is to encounter multiple skins. Between mindand body, between intellect and passion, between physics (field)and sex (permutations pulse). And outside it all, pristine somehow, removed from the riot ofmontaged potentialities, a meta-awareness examines the effluence. The essay closes with the enigmatic sentence: “The character ofthe material analyzes the mind.” Read the preceding sentence tooquickly and it seems that mind analyzes matter, but the real implicationis more perverse; it involves a radical inversion of ontologiesof consciousness: material analyzes the mind.David Jhave Johnston is a multimedia-poet (who has given up chapbooks to builddigital-poetry websites) currently living in Montreal. In the first section, we are immediately drawn in byZemborain’s sensually attenuated syntax:at night it is unavoidable that bodies attuned tothe throbs and the rhythm of loveglands comeNew!from THE POST-APOLLO PRESSETEL ADNANSeasonsRyoko SekiguchiJEAN FRÉMONAdnan’s inquiry – into the natureof Being, Time, knowledge itself– crestsmoment upon moment ofquiet revelation . . .TWO MARKETS,ONCE AGAIN. . . one guesses that loveaccompanies this mostbeautifully mysterious ofjourneys.T HE R EALL IFE OF S HADOWSJean Frémon’spantheon of painters . ..POETRY 77 PP $18 978-0-942996-66-1POETRY 50 PP $14 978-0-942996-65-4 POETRY 98 PP $18 978-0-942996-67-8february/march 2009 29
