A close loving bond is needed between a child and the initialabuser so that a clean split is created when the initial mind-splittingtrauma is carried out. The child can’t reconcile the two extremelyopposite views of the same person, one being a loving caretaker, andthe other being the worst kind of abuser. JodyLienhart, a multiple herself, in her Ph.d dissertation correctly identifiesthe double bind of having two extremely opposite views of the mostimportant person in the child’s life as the fundamental splittingmechanism. She writes in her 1983 dissertation on p. 6-7, “Implicit ineach of the studies of childhood trauma is the pervasive nature ofparadoxical communication. Frequently, this double bindcommunication style appears during the formative, preverbal stages ofchildhood in which the interpretation of these messages is confused.This results in insufficient experimental learning which would allowtranslation of the confused appropriate messages... “This study presentsthe theoretical assumption that multiple personality is developedthrough early childhood state-dependent learning. [That means thatlearning is linked to a state of mind.] Furthermore, it is hypothesized thatthis learning occurs as a result of the hypnoidal effects of childhoodtrauma such as abuse and sexual molestation.
