The adjacent area north of the terminal is used as short-term parking lots for both urban andregional buses. The whole development area is bounded in the north by a supermarket witha short-term car park. The PT Terminal was inaugurated on 5 July 2008 after two years of construction work. Itserves 23 urban transport routes, 37 integrated regional bus routes, 50 long distance and 18international routes with almost 3000 services per working day. The terminal handles 30-40thousand passengers daily. The second part of the project is the redevelopment of the public space of Rieger Square, ca300 metres south of the new terminal. Its importance is given not only because of the mainrailway station, but also because of the city’s biggest hotel, main post office and regionalelectricity provider´s headquarters. The square is also the starting point of S. K. NeumannaStreet, the main shopping street of this city district where traffic calming measures (PTcorridor, private cars access restrictions) have been applied. The new layout of Rieger Sq.separates different road trafficflows (urban public transport, automobile traffic, cyclists)and facilitates pedestrianmovement. The original broadsurface area has been clearlydivided into pedestrian spacewith bike racks, a straightenedthrough road reserved forurban PT only with safetymeasures applied and publicroads (access to and exit fromcar parks) moved away fromthe main pedestrian flows.Fig. 21 - Traction overhead schemeTwo platforms with two standseach are available for thecity centre bound services -the trolleybus and core busroutes pass along the firstplatform (closer to the railstation), the complementaryroutes using the distantplatform; the terminal boundroutes use the oppositeplatform with two stands.Shelters and informationpanels are installed at each ofthe six stands. Two stops (foreach direction of trolleybusroute Nr. 3 passing throughRieger Sq. but not going to theTerminal) are located at theend of S. K. Neumanna Street.49
