PAGE 8 – CCA RODEO NEWS OCTOBER - 2012 CCA RODEO NEWS OCTOB ER – PAGE 9Each year, Agribition hosts the Canadian Cowboys’Association Finals Rodeo presented by Ford – the biggest, most exciting and most prestigious semi-pro rodeocompetition in the country.“The rodeo athletes who come to Regina are the best of thebest. Over the course of the year, they compete in over 60rodeos with the top 11 winners from each event making it tothe Canadian Cowboys’ Association Finals Rodeo. This eventis a chance for Saskatchewan people to see a world-classsporting event with performances at a level you can’t see inmany other places,” said Marty Seymour, CEO of Agribition. The Canadian Cowboys’ Association has come a long waysince its early days in the 1960s when it could count just 60members scattered across the prairies. Carl Barrett was in theroom on the day the association was formed.“It all started by a storekeeper who had an interest in thesport. He wasn’t even an active participant; he just wantedto see something started,” Barrett said.Today, the semi-pro association – which maintains itsnational headquarters in Regina – has over 900 memberswho compete in front of audiences that number over250,000 annually, including over 20,000 at Agribitionalone. The organization manages over a million dollars incash and prizes, with the Agribition prizes this yearexpected to top $ 130,000.00The prizes and the size of membership aren’t the only waysthe organization has changed over the years. Barrett notesthat the backgrounds of members have changed a greatdeal.“In the early days, we were all real cowboys; that is, mostcompetitors had regular jobs in the cattle industry. Today, you could find anyone from a school teacher to a lawyerinvolved in the sport.”That’s not to say the association has lost touch with itsagricultural roots. The McDermits from Southey,Saskatchewan are a farm family whose children havebecome avid rodeo competitors. Their son Kyrell anddaughters Shayana and Shalayne have grown up aroundhorses and cattle and have developed a passion forcompetitive rodeo.Like any major sport, rodeo requires dedication anddiscipline. Mother Tamara McDermit says the family cantravel as much as 2,000 kilometres in a weekend.“The kids have had to get used to a life of sleeping anddoing their homework in the vehicle,” Tamara says. What keeps them going is the sense of community.“We travel all over North America and meet all sorts ofgreat people from as far away as Australia. It’s our rodeofamily – that’s what it’s all about.”Competitors aren’t the only ones for whom the sense offamily is important. Spectators have long enjoyed therodeo as an engaging, exciting sport suitable for all ages. This year the rodeo will feature nine events including bullriding, steer wrestling and ladies barrel racing. It continuesto rank among the most popular events at Agribition.“Rodeo events offer both top-of-class sportsmanship andspine-tingling entertainment for the whole family. Getyour tickets early. We don’t want to see anyone go awaydisappointed,” Seymour said.
