AAL Forum 2011WelcomeThe demographic change is a very important trend in Europe and thereforeAmbient Assisted Living has been included is in the Strategic ResearchAgenda of the Italian Government as an important point for the developmentof new policies for ageing well and opening up for new opportunities forAAL solutions, in assistive technologies and services markets. This is oneof the reasons why Italy decided to be actively involved in the AAL art.185Joint Programme. We are therefore extremely pleased to welcome the AALFORUM to Italy.To this aim we think that key elements for developing the strategy are:Fostering the emergence of innovative ICT-based products, services andsystems for ageing well at home, in the community, and at work, thusimproving the quality of life, autonomy, participation in social life, skills andemployability of older people and reducing the costs of health and socialcare. This may be based e.g. on innovative utilisation of ICT technology, newways of customer interaction or new types of value chains for independentWelcome from the Minister ofEducation, University and Researchliving services. The results of the AAL Joint programme could also be usedby other groups of people, namely the people with disabilities.Creating critical mass of research, development and innovation at EU level inthe areas of technologies and services for ageing well, including the establishmentof a favourable environment for participation by small and mediumsizedenterprises (SMEs).Improving conditions for industrial exploitation of research results by providinga coherent European framework for developing common approaches,including common minimum standards, and facilitating the localisation andadaptation of common solutions which are compatible with varying socialpreferences and regulatory aspects at national or regional level across Europe.All of these challenges require an integrated, collaborative approach in orderto take the step in implementation, mainly in a time where research anddevelopment in AAL has been advancing well but implementation is still suffering.Maria Stella GelminiMinister of Education, University and ResearchIn this spirit, I’m pleased to welcome all the participants of the AAL FORUM2011, in the hope that the event can offer the opportunity for useful, inspiringand enjoyable days in Italy.4
AAL Forum 2011WelcomeI am delighted to open the doors of our land to the wind of Innovation of the3rd AAL Forum.We are aware of the new European population estimates, according to whichthe number of elderly persons will quickly increase. This demographic developmentand the ageing of the European population will lead to a growingnumber of older people living alone and in need of (intensive) care.They will spend money on products securing and enhancing their wealth,safety and security and will they have signifi cant entertainment and communicationsneeds. Considering that this trend will also be accompanied by arapid growth in the number of people with physical disabilities, it is clear thatthe problem of care and assistance to these persons will become more andmore important both from a social and an economic point of view.These societal trends will lead to dramatic challenges for the healthcare andcare systems, state pensions’ schemes and employers alike, but at the sameWelcome to Apulia Regiontime they will offer innovation and business opportunities for technologyproviders in the fi eld of “Ambient Assisted Living” (AAL).AAL can help elder individuals to improve their quality of life, to stay healthierand to live longer, thus extending one’s active and creative participation inthe community. The Apulia Regional Government has recently promoted aseries of interesting initiatives in order to increase awareness about these soimportant social issues not only of the local authorities but also of the publicopinion.Nevertheless, Research and Innovation play a key role in economic developmentstrategy of the Region, and I am sure the AAL Forum represents aremarkable chance to stress our involvement in welfare technology.Hosting the AAL Forum, gives us the opportunity not only of projecting Apuliain a high-tech European reality, but also of placing our Region in a cuttingedge position, alongside other important Italian regions.
