Parents are asked to support this learning at home.Every second newsletter, the Guidance section includes an articlerelevant to the Friendly Schools and Families Program, so thatparents are aware of what is happening at school. As part of the implementation of the program, it is importantto review the school’s behavior management plan and some ofthe beliefs that underpin its actions. The aim of any disciplineprogram should be to guide children to take responsibility for theirown behaviour. What happens at school? Our school has a Behaviour Management Plan designed to createa safe and friendly school environment. This plan is designed toencourage children to take responsibility for their own actions anddevelop self-discipline. The Behaviour Management Plan informsparents, teachers and students what is expected and outlines thepositive and negative consequences of behaviour. What can parents do?By working in conjunction with the school, parents can providetheir children with consistent expectations and boundaries both atschool and at home.• Set consistent firm limits and rules. Children like to knowwhere they stand.• When family rules have been set ask your children to tell youthe rules in their own words.• Be consistent with consequences, both positive and negative.• Acknowledge good behaviour.• Model desired behaviours to your children.• Supervise your children so you know where they are and whatthey are doing.• Become familiar with your school’s Behaviour ManagementPlan so your children see you are actively involved.Show lots of love and affection. You are the most importantperson in your child’s life and your time and attention is the mostpowerful gift you can give them.Thought for Today: “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”SCHOOL REPORTS AND PORTFOLIOSIt’s reporting time again and teachers have been busy assemblingthe data that forms the basis of your child’s report card. Parentswill receive a folio of work their child has completed this year.As our Year 6 & 7 students are away at camp in the last week ofschool, reports will be sent home on the following days:Have a great weekTony,aposhea@bne.catholic.edu.auCOMMUNITY CAREDon’t miss the following opportunities to catch up... especially the‘High Tea’.Year 7Year 6Prep – Year 5Friday, 18th JuneMonday, 21st JuneWednesday, 23rd JuneMost parents took the opportunity to discuss their child’s progressin interviews with the class teacher at the end of Term 1. Firstly, Early Childhood; The WrongBook and The Terrible Plop. The Wrong Bookby Nick BlandWhat are you doing here? You’re in the WRONG BOOK!Nicholas Ickle has a problem. He is tryingto tell a story – but his book is repeatedlycrashed by characters that don’t belong. First,it’s an elephant, then two monsters, a pirate, a queen and herattendants and more. As the intruders get increasingly ridiculous,Nicholas gets increasingly frustrated – only getting the chance totell the reader what the book is supposed to be about as a giant‘The End’ drops from above. This funny picture book is a wonderful read aloud offering. Notonly will adults enjoy reading it, but children will quickly join in onthe refrain of ‘You’re in the wrong book!’ The illustrations are largeand comic, with Nicholas Ickle dressed as a ring master, in dressupsincluding a coat with tails, a top hat with sticky tape visible, and shorts. The intruders range from the big, slightly puzzledlooking elephant which takes up a whole page, to a pirate in aone-man boat on wheels, and a snooty looking queen. This is the sort of book which will withstand repeated reading andis sure to become a firm favourite. Here is the storyOf the Terrible PLOP,With a bear and a rabbitAnd a hop hop hop.The Terrible Plopby Ursula DubosarskyIllustrator: Andrew JoynerBut what is the PLOP?And where does it hide?Open the bookAnd look inside…The Children’s Book Council of Australia’s theme for BookWeek 2010; Across the Story Bridge lends itself to numerousinterpretations as the word Bridge resonates with meaningsbeyond the stone, wooden, concrete and metal structures thatspan rivers, canals, roads, etc. There is a strong metaphorical image of bridges. We talk of buildingbridges between individuals, communities and countries as anexpression of reaching out to understand other than ourselves.• And there are a number of sayings involving bridges.• We may prefer to cross bridges as we come to them.• We may go a bridge too far.• And we may prefer to forget something as water under thebridge.Book Week can be celebrated by learning the basics of bridgebuilding: the wonders of outstanding bridges, how they canbecome national or community icons, and, of course, the varietyof bridges from a tree over a river to the gigantic structures thatwill rise from engineering plans still in draft stage;ORBy concentrating on the metaphors implicit in some books ofbuilding bridges at individual or group levelsORBoth! From award-winning author Ursula Dubosarsky and illustratorAndrew Joyner comes an irresistible new picture book about alittle rabbit who learns that some things in life aren’t as scary asthey seem. Based on a Tibetan myth, a sound in the forest sets allthe animals running for their lives from the Terrible Plop. Childrenwill be charmed by the wonderful zany energy of the illustrationsand the rollicking rhyming story.Reviewed by Sally MurphyLearning to Read – Phonemic AwarenessPhonemic Awareness is one of the foundation blocks in learningto read. Phonemic awareness is not phonics – it is the auditoryprocess of identifying the sounds within words. It becomes Phonicswhen these sounds are matched with letters.Phonemic Awareness is essential to learning to read in analphabetic writing system, because letters represent sounds orphonemes. Without phonemic awareness, phonics makes littlesense.Research has shown that children who are taught to listen for andcan hear the different sounds in words have proved to becomestronger readers.St Vincent’s Primary School Newsletter 3

Phonemic Awareness Games to play at home and atschool• Play rhyming games – find the rhyming words in NurseryRhymes, Dr Seuss books and other picture books.• Clap the syllables in words – el-e-phant; hip-po-pot-a-mus.• Play “I spy with my little eye something that begins with “b”(sound not letter name)• Play “I Spy” with ending sounds.• Play the “Say it fast” game – Say a word – one sound at atime and have your child say the word fast eg h/a/t = ‘hat’ Thisis the phonemic awareness skill of blending• Play the “Say the word slowly game”. Stretch out thesounds in ‘hat’ – h/a/t. This is the skill of segmenting.Research has identified the skills of segmenting andblending as being the most important predictor of readingsuccess in beginning reading. These games have been incorporated into “Book Bag” activities inPrep and Year 1 but can easily be played in the car on the way toand from school.Remember that these skills are developmental and that your childmay not yet be ready for a particular game – only play gameswhich are fun and allow your child to experience success. We all learned to walk and talk at different rates – so too do welearn to read.June NobletSupport teacher – Inclusive Educationjnoblet@bne.catholic.edu.auSPORT NEWSATHLETICSNext week Years 3-7 will be involved in trials over sprint, 200m and800m distances.
