House of Prayer Lutheran ChurchCONNECTIONSVOLUME 2010 - Issue 11 - NOVEMBERchurch.hop@midconetwork.comNetworking People in Prayer, Planning, and PraiseDear Friends in Christ,As I experience this wonderfully mild Novemberwith you, I’m finding that my heart and mind arebeing drawn irresistibly toward PRAISE dayafter day! Throughout this past weekend, Irelished the hours I could spend in abundantsunshine and nearly 70-degree temperatures. With weather like this in the middle of a NorthDakota November, I’d be a fool if I didn’tappreciate something about such remarkabledays. However, this very thought brought achallenging question to mind. “How do I feelabout the days in my life that are not so pleasant? Are these days less of a gift to me?”God’s goodness surrounds each of us in amultitude of ways every day! God’s goodnessis in the abundance and variety of foods we areprivileged to enjoy. God’s goodness is in theheat that warms our homes when the bitter coldof winter does come. God’s goodness is in theair we breathe, the water we drink, therelationships we treasure. God’s goodnessblesses us in every sight, sound, and sense weare privileged to experience! Scripturepunctuates these thoughts with this noteworthyWord:“Every good and perfect gift is from above...”(James 1:16)Now, with these thoughts before us,I invite us to ask ourselves another question. “Ifwe’re showered with God’s goodness every day, andwe’re enjoying God’s goodness regularly, do weTHANK GOD for such goodness? Does praise andthanksgiving come easily to our lips?” Probably not!!Whether we’ve grown lazy or complacent, orwe’re just spiritually asleep... let’s not allowanother moment to pass without offering to ourgracious God a heartfelt gesture of thankgivingand praise! Fortunately, we have Scripturalwords that are written down for us... even spoonfedto us... reminding us ofwhat we need to expressregularly, spontaneously, and naturally in responseto all our God does for us.So... go ahead, friends...give your THANKS toGod. PRAISE God! Learnto let such words springreadily to your lips. Allowthe psalmist to offer youthe prompting you may need to get started. And then... let a flood of praise pour forth fromyour heart to His!PRAISE THE LORD!Praise the Lord from the heavens;Praise him from the heights!Praise him, all his angels;Praise him, all his host!Praise him sun and moon;Praise him all you shining stars!Young men and women alike,Old and young together;Let them praise the name of the Lord,For his name alone is exalted; His glory is above earth and heaven.PRAISE THE LORD!(Psalm 148:1-3, 12-13)

Page 10 House of Prayer Lutheran Church VOLUME 2010 - Issue 11 NOVEMBERTHANKS FOR AWONDERFULPASTORAPPRECIATIONMONTH!November is so much more than a traditional time togive thanks for the blessings I have experienced the pastyear. This November, my heart is filled to overflowingwith a sense of gratitude for the meaningful ways somany of you affirmed my ministry among you. For thosewho attended and contributed to the Pastor AppreciationPotluck, I GIVE THANKS! For those who shared withme and my family heartwarming cards filled withthoughtful and supportive messages, I GIVE THANKS!For those who offered special gifts that will bless ourentire family in the coming months, I GIVE THANKS!My life has been richly blessed through my serviceamong you, and I count it as a GIFT to walk in a journeyof faith with each of you. The Norwegian side of myfamily has a very apt expression for how I feel as I thinkof each of you... “MANGE TUSEN TAK!” —Many thousand thanks!Pastor DaveI want to thank everyone who has taken time this monthto show my family and me so much kindness. All thecards, kind words, and gifts are certainly not expected, but they have been incredibly uplifting. Your kindnessand support are so life-giving and in the midst ofchallenges in ministry, knowing you are supporting mereally does make a wonderful difference. I know all ofyou work hard as well and probably don’t get theappreciation you always deserve, but I wish all of youcould be blessed as much as I have been by your kindwords. I will save all of your cards and letters for timeswhen I feel a little overwhelmed, then I will pull themout and read them to lift my spirits. Again, thank you foryour kindness. I truly am blessed to be a Pastor here atHouse of Prayer.Pastor JoelIs our church thefriendliest place intown? One of the curious things about“friendliness” is that mostpeople consider themselvesfriendly. Go ahead — ask peoplearound you to rank how friendly theyare (say, on a scale from 1 to 10). Even thegrouches, curmudgeons, and crabs will probablyrank themselves above a five. It’s tough to know just how friendly a person can be, letalone an entire church. Many churches are doing a greatjob at being friendly, while others are quite the opposite. One thing’s for sure: Most of us tend to overestimate howfriendly we are. And almost all of us have room forimprovement.Friendliness is free. We don’t have to spend a dime toshow people how much we care about them. Friendlinessmultiplies exponentially. Since friendliness is everyone’sjob (not just that of the church staff or the greeters at thedoor), we can spread the equity, so to speak. The bottom line is, we can grow our church by beingfriendlier. How can we “grow” friendlier? Let’s look:1. SMILE!- Everyone owns a smile - you just need to use it.2. We can make people feel comfortable.- A welcome handshake is a good start.3. We can help put them at ease.- If they are new, even knowing where the restroomsare is important!4. Conversation with visitors.- Introduce yourself, and greet the guests. Invite them toenjoy coffee & a cookie at Coffeetime with you.5. Help make them feel like they belong.- Thank them for coming, and invite them to comeagain. Greet them before they sit down at the next service. If we create an environment of belonging, visitors willreturn no matter how beautiful the Sanctuary or buildingwas. The caring friends they meet at House of Prayercan be a breath of fresh air to so many. So - “WELCOME”someone this weekend!!If someone were to pay you ten cents for every kind word you ever spoke about people --and you took away five cents for every unkind word --would you be rich... or poor?
