Applied Economics (also called Business Management and Ownership)
is a semester class dealing with the ins and outs of running a
business. It takes you on a journey of launching a business, financing
a business, competing with other firms, and making decisions on
production, marketing, research and development, and seeing how
supply and demand effects the market place. The class then splits up
into small companies which compete against each other on a computer
simulation.
Another great feature about the class is that once a week a business
consultant comes in to talk about the actual world of business. The
students relate what he brings to the classroom with the material
learned in class. The consultants this year were Doug Currier from
Pizza Hut and Roman Dymerski.
In December, five students from the AE class went to Moline to
compete in an Economics Bowl against schools from Illinois and
Iowa. The team placed second. This marks the 2nd time Kewanee
H.S. has placed second in very challenging Bowl competition.
Junior Achievement
