Welcome to Jefferson High School, Parents! This is a very exciting time to be a part of the JHS community. Between the ever evolving needs of a changing community, the complete remodeling of our building (we are beginning Phase II of our reconstruction process which will include a switch to geothermal energy, a facelift of every classroom in the building, and a completely revamped cafeteria), and the increasingly high standards that we demand from our students, there is lots to do and cover as the 2012-13 school year begins. Whether you are a returning J-Hawk or a new member of our family, we all look forward to working with you during the new school year. This handbook presents the opportunities and expectations provided to all students and their families. The point of this handbook is to help you to understand what goes on at Jefferson, our mission, programs and policies, and where to go when you need to find the information you need. Needless to say, there is a wealth of information contained in this booklet; we hope you take the time to familiarize yourself with its contents. Should any questions arise, we invite and encourage you to contact our school. Jefferson offers programs for students with all kinds of post-high school plans. Whether you intend to go to college, technical school, the military, the work force, or even if you are uncertain about your plans, JHS is an excellent school for you, having even been named a National Blue Ribbon School twice. Through cooperative efforts between teachers, students, families, and support staff, we know that every student can succeed. Study hall has not proved to be an effective learning time for many students, so a research based plan will replace study hall. Jefferson will be implementing Extended Learning for the 2012-13 school year. Extended Learning is a classroom where students are assigned to receive academic assistance based on their performance data in their academic classes. Students will be studying, reading, or receiving academic assistance. Each period of the day there will be approximately ten teachers assigned to Extended Learning. Each of these teachers will work with 8-10 students to help them succeed in all of their classes. The great thing about having multiple teachers available each period is that they can move students around to better serve learning needs. If a student needs a math teacher or a science teacher for help, there is one available each period of the day. One additional benefit to Extended Learning is that students will also earn elective credit towards their graduation. You may be the parent of a junior or senior who has the option for P.A.R.T. (Parent Approved Release Time). Many of these students will not be assigned to Extended Learning because they are successful in all their classes. These students have two options. One option is to leave campus and exercise their P.A.R.T. privileges and the second option is to sign on as a teaching assistant and tutor in an Extended Learning class to receive elective credit towards graduation. Our goals have always been to prepare students for learning beyond high school. We must help students succeed in all their classes so they graduate and feel confident in college and their career choices. We believe that implementing Extended Learning schoolwide will help us do a better job in meeting these goals.
