Adobe-GB1-4Character Collectionfor CID-Keyed Fonts1 IntroductionThis document describes the Adobe-GB1-4 character collection which supportsthe Chinese GB 2312-80, GB 1988-89, GB/T 12345-90, GB 13000.1-93, and GB 18030-2000 character set standards. This document assumes thatreaders are familiar with the CID-keyed font format, which is described inthe Adobe Technical Specification #5014, “Adobe CMap and CIDFont FilesSpecification.”This document is useful for font developers wishing to develop Chinese languagefonts for use with PostScript products, and for software developersand end users wishing to access glyphs based on this character collection.A character collection contains all characters required to make fonts for aparticular language or market. Encodings are specified by CMap (CharacterMap) files, which generally reference a subset of the character collection.Each CID (Character ID) is associated with a class of character shapes. Thespecific shape of a character from a given class is dependent on the typefacestyle, the language, orientation, and writing direction of the font, and possiblyother factors.Character instances (glyphs) for all CIDs are shown in this document, givinga specific example of the correspondence between a CID number and itscharacter shape class. Font developers should design glyphs for each memberof the encodings they wish to support. They may use this document as a referencewhen proofing CIDFont files.A further character reference aid is the Adobe-GB1-4 Character Code Table,which shows the correspondence between CIDs and the various charactercodes used to access the characters: GB 2312-80, GB 1988-89, GB/T 12345-90, GB 13000.1-93, GB 18030-2000, and UTF-8. The table itself containsinformation in its header that describes its contents in greater detail. The codetable file (cid2code.txt) is available from the Adobe Developers Association.1

Adobe Systems also publishes a series of CMap files to support commonencodings based on the GB 2312-80, GB 1988-89, GB/T 12345-90, GB13000.1-93, and GB 18030-2000 character set standards. These are describedin Adobe Technical Note #5094, “CJKV Character Collections and CMapFiles for CID-Keyed Fonts.” Both this document and the CMap files areavailable from the Adobe Developers Association.NoteMany shipping PostScript printers will not be compatible with CID-keyedfonts without the prior installation of the CID Support Library. This libraryconsists of a package of PostScript language procedures which is availablefor licensing from the Adobe Developers Association.2 The Adobe-GB1-4 Character CollectionThis section contains a catalog of all glyphs in the Adobe-GB1-4 charactercollection. The name of this collection, Adobe-GB1-4 originates from thethree dictionary entries: /Registry (Adobe), /Ordering (GB1), and /Supplement4 of CIDSystemInfo defined in the CIDFont dictionary.The glyphs in the listing are organized by CID number. CID numbers 0through 29063 are listed along with an illustration of the glyph associatedwith each. The width marks are for reference only. Supported encodingsinclude ISO-2022, EUC-CN, GBK, UCS-2, UTF-8, and the mixed one, twoandfour-byte encoding as published in GB 18030-2000.Supplement 0 (zero) of Adobe-GB1 enumerates 7,717 glyphs (CIDs 0through 7716) and contains the characters necessary for supporting the GB2312-80 and GB 1988-89 character set standards (incorporating correctionsand additions specified in GB 6345.1-86) and the Macintosh ® versionthereof. It includes vertical characters specified in GB/T 12345-90. CIDs 1through 95 and 7712 through 7715 are proportional-width Latin characters;and CIDs 814 through 907 and 7716 are half-width Latin characters.Supplement 1 of Adobe-GB1 adds 2,180 glyphs (CIDs 7717 through 9896),and provides support for the GB/T 12345-90 character set standard. These2,180 glyphs appended to the character collection are traditional forms ofChinese characters that are already a part of Adobe-GB1-0.Supplement 2 of Adobe-GB1 adds 12,230 glyphs (CIDs 9897 through22,126), and provides support for the GBK character set standard (GB13000.1-93). These 12,230 glyphs appended to the character collection representthe Chinese characters necessary to completely support both the GBKcharacter set standard and the complete set of 20,902 Chinese characters inUnicode, Version 2.1.2 Adobe-GB1-4 Character Collection for CID-Keyed Fonts (30 Nov 2000)

Supplement 3 of Adobe-GB1 adds 226 glyphs (CIDs 22127 through 22352,all pre-rotated). CIDs 22127 through 22225 provide additional proportionalLatin characters (99) and CIDs 22226 through 22352 additional half-widthLatin characters (127). This supplement was designed to add pre-rotatedinstances of all proportional- and half-width characters found in earlier supplements.Their purpose is to significantly improve the vertical handling ofsuch characters in the context of OpenType.Supplement 4 of Adobe-GB1 adds 6,711 glyphs (CIDs 22353 through 29063;CIDs 29059 through 29063 are pre-rotated to improve their vertical handlingin the context of OpenType). CIDs 22353 through 22356 provide additionalcurrency symbols with proportional and half-width properties, CID 22357provides the ideographic half fill space, a visual indicator of a screen spacefor half an ideograph, CID 22358 provides the full-width Euro, CIDs 22359through 22397 provide additional Hiragana and Katakana characters andsymbols, some of them are adjusted for vertical use, CIDs 22398 through22400 provide the so-called “Hangzhou” or “Suzhou” numerals ten, twenty,and thirty, and CIDs 22401 through 22427 provide the extended Bopomofoglyphs.The major part of Supplement 4, CIDs 22428 through 29058, provides charactersto cover the Unified Han Ideographs Extension A, as listed in UnicodeVersion 3.0/ISO 10646-1:2000.As mentioned above, CIDs 29059 through 29063 complete Supplement 4 toprovide the pre-rotated forms of CIDs 22353 through 22357.The typeface used to illustrate each character in this section is STSong Light, a product of Changzhou SinoType Technology Co., Ltd. STSong Lightis certified by the Press and Publication Administration of the People’sRepublic of China, the China State Language Commission, and the NationalTypeface Committee; and is recommended for use in official and professionalpublications.2 The Adobe-GB1-4 Character Collection 3
