PATHWAYS - WINTER EDITION7Local Ice DancingTeam Heads Off Tothe OlympicsThe Reed family is comprised of three very talented kids,Cathy, Chris, and Allison, who never lost focus of their goal toone day qualify for the World Olympics. As early as the year2000, the Reed children began their training at William G.Mennen Sports Arena in Morris Township under the instructionof two former Olympians and Mennen’s staff coaches, SusanKelley and Andrew Stroukoff. This winter, all three skaterswill compete in Ice Dancing at the 2010 Winter Olympics inVancouver, Canada. It all began when son, Chris needed an ice dancing partner. CoachesAndy and Susie decided Chris’s sister, Cathy should partner with him, even though he was a good deal shorter than her. In 2001, despite theheight challenges, they won their first dance competition in Lake Placid,New York.“After countless hours oftraining at Mennen Arena, the Reed family nowtravels the world to compete.”Cathy and Chris competed at their first United States Junior NationalChampionship and finished tenth. By their second year in Novice, they disappointingly missed the cut to the United States NationalChampionships. An opportunity arose when the pair began training withsenior level teams, coached by Nikolai Morozov and Shae-Lynn Bourne.Cathy and Chris won a Novice Ice Dance title at their first U.S. NationalChampionships in 2005/2006. It was after winning this title, that Cathyand Chris had the opportunity to compete for Japan at the Senior level. They are now Japanese Ice Dance Gold Medalists and World Competitors.Allison, the youngest sibling could not find a partner to match herelite skating abilities, but she continued training, as she loved skatingand enjoyed her lessons with Andy and Susie. After much searching, shefound partner, Otar Japaridze. Recently, Allison and Otar competed atthe Nebelhorn Trophy, Germany (September 2009) and qualified for theOlympics. Once hearing this amazing news, Allison’s mom, Noriko calledAndy and Susie to thank them for all that they have done for her family.Susie stated, “It was very touching to be one of the first people that Norikocalled when Allison qualified for the 2010 Olympic team.” It is fascinatingthat the Reed family children are now skating where their coaches onceperformed at Worlds in Japan.Always looking to improve their performance skills, the Reed childrenfrequently dressed up on holidays and performed impromptu Christmasconcerts in the lobby of Mennen Sports Arena. After countless hoursof training at Mennen Arena, the Reed family now travels the world tocompete. When they come home, they still come to Mennen to practice. We wish them luck at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver!
