TUBE & PIPE INDUSTRY
30
Years of Global
Experience
Past, Present & Future
The world’s largest and arguably most influential membership association of tube and pipe
engineers and other industry professionals celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2009.
It is a non-profit making organisation totally committed to its members and to the promoting of
education, technical development and exchange, technical excellence and networking
in the worldwide industry.
The occasion of this important landmark is an excellent time to reflect on the
ITA’s history, philosophy and future.

The Beginning
The original ITA logo, designed by Phil Clayton
L-R: John Croser (founding member) together with
Derek Warner and Jim Ruff at an ITA Conference
in 1985
An innovative conference on the subject of ‘Tube
Production & Processing’ organised by the International
Wire & Machinery Association (IWMA) in Birmingham,
UK, in April 1978 was attended by a large gathering of
tube and pipe engineers from around the world.
The success of this conference led directly to the
founding of the ITA, instigated by John Hogg, in the
spring of 1979.
The first Executive Management Meeting of the ITA,
which took place on 31st January 1979 at the Metropole
Hotel, Birmingham, UK, included a number of tube and
pipe engineers.
These founder members were J A Croser, T D Robinson,
P A Clayton, R H Gabel, M J Freeman, E Nicol, J H J Rogers,
N Winkler and J C Hogg. At this meeting the aims and
ethos of the ITA were formulated.
Although the ITA was ‘born’ out of the IWMA it
immediately established itself as a totally independent
association with its own constitution.
It differed from the IWMA’s corporate membership
structure by forming as a personal membership
association, a philosophy that the ITA retains to this day.
Despite their independence the ITA and IWMA retain
close links as sister organisations with a shared
Secretariat and have co-operated on occasions with
joint booths at wire and tube exhibitions and have coorganised
technical events.
Past, Present & Future – 30 years of the International Tube Association 3
When the first Chairman of the Association – John Croser
of Ellay Enfield Tubes – gave his report at the first Annual
General Meeting (AGM), held in Belgium in 1980, the ITA
membership already stood at one hundred and fifteen
representatives in the tube and pipe industry from
fifteen different countries.
The AGM report was printed in four languages, already
reflecting the true international character of the ITA. By
the end of 2008 membership had reached nearly eight
hundred from more than seventy countries.
Phillip Clayton, who designed the original ITA logo as
well as helping to design and make the ITA ‘Presidents
Trophy’ (later re-named the ‘Professor Hugh Sansome
Trophy’), held the office of Chairman of the Technical
Sub Committee, which was responsible for the papers
programme at ITA conferences.
Later Mr Clayton was also appointed the editor of the
first publication devoted to the metal tube and pipe
industries – ‘Tube International’ originally designed and
produced by one of the Association’s founders John
Hogg.
The adopted official journals for the ITA are now ‘Tube
and Pipe Technology’ originated by John Hogg and ‘Tube
Products INTERNATIONAL’, originated by his children,
Caroline Sullens and Paul Hogg.
These industry-leading magazines perform a very
important role in the global industry, informing and
educating everyone with the latest news and technology
from the marketplace.
ITA booth ready for action at Tube Düsseldorf 2006 with
John Metcalfe on duty
In November 1979 the ITA organised a technical
conference in its own right in Birmingham, UK, the very
first of no less than forty seven such events run by the
Association up to the end of 2008.
1980 saw the appointment of the first ITA president, a
position held so far by seven major industry figures.
Towards the end of the 1980s John Hogg, owner of Intras
Ltd and ITA Executive Secretary, in agreement with the
ITA board, saw the need for a biennial tube exhibition to
compliment the established wire Düsseldorf event.
After negotiations with NOWEA, (now known as Messe
Düsseldorf), the inaugural Tube Düsseldorf exhibition
took place in spring 1988.
The ITA became an official sponsor of and industry
partner to the exhibition in 1994, a partnership that
still holds good today after ten editions and a dramatic
growth in exhibition space to forty one thousand square
metres and more than one thousand exhibitors in 2008.
Membership grew steadily throughout the first decade
in the ITA’s history, in particular in the North American
region, and in 1990 the Board of Directors USA was
formed, becoming the North American Management
Board in 1992, with responsibility for the ITA’s activities
in Canada, Mexico and the USA.
The region still accounts for the second largest total of
ITA members.
Increasingly
International
An early version of the ITA membership
brochure, printed in seven languages
From the very beginning the ITA had attracted members
worldwide and this process was boosted further in
several ways through the 1990s.
The establishment of an Indian Management Board
(IMB) in 1994, chaired by Deepak Jindal, led to a marked
increase in ITA influence in the sub continent and
memberships in India remain the highest regional total
to this very day.
In 1999 Jintras (India) Ltd became the official
representative office of the association in India.
It had become increasingly obvious that the so called
‘tiger economies’ of the Far East were very important
developing markets for the industry and in 1997 the
ITA supported and sponsored the first Tube Singapore
exhibition, which ran there biennially until 2005 before
re-locating to Bangkok in 2007 as Tube Southeast Asia.
The ITA has continued to sponsor the event since 1997
and to organise supporting technical conferences at
some editions.
Another consequence of the dramatic development in
the Far East was the need to oversee and co-ordinate
the ITA’s interests in the region and so the Asia Pacific
Management Board (APMB) was formed in 1998.
The APMB has been chaired by Tsutomo Nakata since
its formation and has included board members from
Japan, Australia, Thailand, Korea, China, Malaysia and
Indonesia.
Jeroo Vandrevala, who represents
the ITA in India
After 21 years of increasing influence worldwide and
having established regional boards in India, North
America and the Asia Pacific area the ITA Executive Board
acknowledged that these regions needed to have an
even greater say in the global affairs of the Association.
Accordingly in 2000 a regional European Management
Board (EMB) was formed, under the chairmanship of
David Rippon.
At the same time the ITA created the International
Executive Management Board (IEMB) to be the senior
ruling body for the ITA’s policies and business affairs.
The IEMB draws representatives from each of the four
regional management boards to govern the Association,
headed by the ITA chairman.
An Administration Sub Committee (ASC) deputises for
the IEMB between board meetings and oversees the
formal election of new members.
Several sub committees exist to assist the ITA in the
administration of the Association’s technical, educational
and financial affairs. (The ITA organisational chart is
shown on page 28)
The appointment of an Indian representative office in
1997 was very successful. To facilitate the development
of the ITA and its influence in other important regions the
Association established representatives for the Russian
speaking world in 2005, Ukrtruboprom (the Ukrainian
Tube Association) and in China, CCRSA (the China Cold
Roll-forming Steel Association). Both appointments led
to substantial increases in membership in these regions.
Exhibition History
The British Group area at Tube Düsseldorf
Visitors at a recent FABTECH exhibition
In addition to the ITA’s major involvement in the birth of
the Tube Düsseldorf and Tube Southeast Asia (formerly
Tube Singapore) exhibitions it has always been quick to
recognise the potential for the industry to develop in
other markets.
As the new millennium progressed it became apparent
that the so-called BRIC countries, Brazil, Russia, India and
China, as well as other regions such as the Gulf and Arab
States and Turkey, offered tremendous opportunities for
the tube and pipe industry to develop.
New exhibitions have been born that are sponsored
by the ITA and at which the Association has invariably
provided practical support and valuable services for
members as well as taking the opportunity to promote
the benefits of membership to an even wider audience.
The ITA has been very careful in choosing to support the
definitive exhibitions for these markets of opportunity
starting from the dates shown in brackets: Tube India
International (2003); Tube Russia (2003); Tubotech, Brazil
(2004); Tube China (2004) Tekno/Tube Arabia, Dubai
(2007) and Boru, Istanbul (2008).
For many years the ITA, although not a sponsor, has
also supported and helped to promote the leading
metal forming industry trade fair in the USA, FABTECH,
which has a large section devoted to the tube and pipe
industry.
Technical Development,
the Three E’s: Excellence,
Exchange and Education
Professor Hugh Sansome
The 1990 Tube India ITA conference with Firdose
Vandrevala and John Hogg moderating
Having come into existence as a result of a tube
conference in 1978 the ITA naturally places great
emphasis on what it sees as one of its key roles of
encouraging technical excellence, development,
exchange and education in the industry.
This has been accomplished through a worldwide
programme of forty seven technical conferences,
symposiums and seminars between 1979 and the end
of 2008. Almost all of these events have been organised
solely by the ITA.
Many of these events have presented ground breaking
technology or have introduced tried and tested
developments to new audiences in emerging markets.
As a result the Association has compiled an impressive
back catalogue of technical papers, which are available
to all and are a valuable resource for the industry.
Apart from individual papers from all of these forty
seven conferences, CD-ROMs of all papers from most
of the ITA’s recent conferences can be obtained.
To encourage further technical excellence the ITA
instituted its biennial ‘President’s Trophy’ award in 1981.
This award is presented at every Tube Düsseldorf to the
author or authors of what is considered by the Awards
Committee to be the best technical paper presented at
ITA conferences in the preceding two years.
In the ITA’s formative years the late Professor Hugh
Sansome played a vital role in the establishment of
the Technical Management Committee (originally the
Past, Present & Future – 30 years of the International Tube Association 13
Technical Sub Committee) and setting the standards by
which speaker applications for conferences are selected
and evaluated. In 2004 the ‘President’s Trophy’ was renamed
to commemorate his immense contribution.
The continuing popularity and excellence of ITA technical
events led to the introduction of additional ‘Papers
Award’ shields in 2008. Past award winners are listed in
the appendix (page 37) and the roll call features many of
the world’s leading experts in their fields over the years.
In 2007 the Indian Board, through the good offices of its
chairman and vice president Yogesh Bhatia of Gallium
Industries, introduced basic training seminars in tube
production to help the Indian industry meet the need
for more qualified production engineers.
Looking to the future the ITA is examining the potential
for organising Internet-based seminars or ‘webinars’ to
reach an even wider audience in the most cost effective
way possible.
The ITA helps to educate and inform members by
providing them with an annual subscription to either
of the industry’s leading trade magazines ‘Tube & Pipe
Technology’ or ‘Tube Products INTERNATIONAL’.
A more recent innovation has been the introduction of
a special quarterly bulletin in Chinese for members in
the PRC that incorporates a technical article from the
Association’s catalogue.
Networking: A Key Role
Networking at ITA conference and supported exhibitions
One of the most important aspects of formal gatherings
of tube and pipe engineers at technical events is the
opportunity for networking and stimulating discussion
and debate.
In its 30 year history the ITA has organised nearly fifty
technical events alone. At many of these table top
exhibits provide delegates, speakers and sponsors
with additional opportunities to interact with industry
colleagues.
The list of past conferences in the appendix (page 39)
demonstrates the scope and geographical distribution
of the ITA’s formal technical programme, which is set to
continue into the future with events planned in Beijing,
Istanbul and Mumbai in 2009 and 2010.
Other networking opportunities for members that
have been established over the years include the ITA’s
members’ lunch held on the Wednesday at every Tube
Düsseldorf exhibition; social evenings at many of the
technical events and a special reception for Chinese
members during the Tube China exhibition.
Whilst the ITA uses and continues to develop various
forms of electronic media to assist members in their
contacts with fellow industry professionals in many
cultures there is still no substitute for face to face
meetings and discussions and creating networking
opportunities will continue to be a key role for the
Association.
Marketing and
Promotional Support
The ITA website homepage – www.itatube.org
Another key role undertaken by the ITA is to assist its
members in the promotion of their organisations. In
June 1997 the first edition of the Association’s newsletter
ITAN appeared.
This newsletter contains editorials from members that
are published free of charge. ITAN does not include any
advertisements, except for ITA events, and is circulated
in hard copy form to some 10,000 readers throughout
the world by both mail and extensive distribution at
exhibitions attended by the ITA.
More than twenty eight editions of the newsletter have
been published since 1997. ITAN has developed over
recent years with a full colour format introduced in 2005
and an electronic version, or e-zine, in 2008.
On occasions language supplements in Russian and
Chinese are produced as well as larger editions prior to
major industry events.
All editorials appear on the ITA website www.itatube.org.
The advent of the e-zine has meant that the potential
readership of ITAN has increased dramatically, especially
in regions with unreliable postal services.
The website plays a very important role in communicating
globally the ITA’s own activities as well as members’ news.
Regularly updated, the site posts members’ editorials
throughout the year. Also on the website are contact
details and information of all organisations that have
one or more ITA members, often with hyperlinks to their
own websites.
Past, Present & Future – 30 years of the International Tube Association 17
In past years the ITA also published the Tube Industry
Yearbook, which was recognised as a most valuable
resource for the tube and pipe sector, providing the
industry with a unique directory and buyer’s guide.
The Yearbook was first produced in 1986 in seven
languages and was updated every year until the final
edition in 2001.
With the increasing popularity of the Internet the
ITA decided that offering ‘real time’ information was
vitally important and the www.tubefirst.com directory
website replaced the Yearbook as a primary information
resource.
Vital Support of
Members of Boards
& Committees
John Metcalfe, long time ITA Honorary
Treasurer and first recipient of the Lifetime
Achievement Award
The ITA is run by the members for the members.
Thanks to the invaluable support of many individual
members since 1979, who have given their time
voluntarily, the ITA has been able to achieve its preeminent
position in the global industry today.
The ITA is very grateful also to the many tube and pipe
organisations who have allowed their employees to
be involved in ITA activities as well as supporting the
Association in many other ways.
From 1979 until 2004 John Hogg inspired and drove
the ITA through its first twenty five years drawing on
the enthusiasm, commitment and expertise provided
by the many members who served on the boards and
committees.
After his death in 2004 the IEMB decided to commemorate
John’s unique place in the history of the ITA by creating
the ‘John C Hogg Lifetime Achievement Award’.
Honorary life membership and a commemorative trophy
is presented at the members’ lunch at Tube Düsseldorf to
a member who, in the opinion of the Officers of the ITA,
has made an outstanding contribution to the Association
over many years in a variety of ways including service on
boards and committees, presenting papers and assisting
at conferences and acting as an ambassador generally
for the ITA.
In 2006 the very first recipient of the award was John
Metcalfe, long time ITA Honorary Treasurer.
TUBE & PIPE INDUSTRY
30
Years of Global
Experience
The current version of the ITA membership brochure,
promoting the many benefits of joining the association to
prospective new members around the world
As the International Tube Association entered its
30th year the tube and pipe industry faced enormous
challenges brought about by the global economic crisis
and recessions in many countries. Hitherto buoyant
markets like China and Russia experienced severe
downturns and an inevitable period of rationalisation
and consolidation was bound to follow.
In such circumstances the ITA has an even more
important role to play in supporting its members and the
worldwide industry. This encompasses practical and costsaving
support at trade fairs; providing opportunities for
presenting technology to potential customers and for
networking at technical events; offering free promotional
and communication avenues via the ITAN newsletter
and ITA website; keeping members updated on industry
news by providing a free subscription to a choice of
leading trade magazines; giving member-only reduced
fees at technical events and facilitating large discounts
for entries in the Tubefirst.com directory website.
The task of compiling this history of the International
Tube Association to mark its 30th anniversary has been
both nostalgic and fascinating and those nine founder
members in 1979 who had the vision of creating a
global industry association should be very proud of their
legacy.
Being a member of the world’s largest personal
membership association for tube and pipe engineers
and other industry professionals is just as relevant today
as it was in 1979, perhaps even more so in the very
challenging years ahead.
