Greetings Unto the Populace of False Isle.Wasn’t that a Mermaid? (“Wasn’t that a Party?” by the Irish Rovers). Two hundred and eighty of our closest friends joined us for Mermaid Tourneyand False Isle rose to the occasion. Despite the rain, fire bans, weddingbanns, overflowing garderobes (X2) and a vain effort to keep the scheduleon track it was another outstanding event, our two autocrats extraordinairekept everything running smoothly and the populace pitched in whereverhelp was needed. How wonderful it was to see Award of Arms granted to Lady Elizabeth theDragon, Lady Ashley the Crow, Lady Aline De Bruges, and our bountifulbard Lord Thormot. Those that participated in creating the Principalitybanner were thanked at court and received their official scroll. (There wasone rather obvious omission and I shall contact Her Royal Highness regardingthat.) HL Grimon did receive the Hafoc for contribution to the fightingartes within the Principality. The Table-making bee/Investiture Preparation is looking like it shall be August22 nd . It will most likely take up the better part of the whole week-end.Rory has constructed ours (and it is beautiful) to make sure that the patternran true to, well, plan. Which, of course it doesn’t. So now that he’sworked the bugs out we can proceed with the project! While the Chatelaines office is yet unfilled let me put forward the notionthat we are all Chatelaines for the Shire in that we are all ambassadors. Ifyou see a new person at a gathering please make a point of making contact. If you can, mayhap pass them on a phone number and/or email address andwebsite of the Shire. All of us are veritable fonts of information so do notfeel reticent to tuck someone new under your wing.I have not assembled the officers for a meeting where we will be discussingthe Poll of the Populace. I have received roughly half of them back so thereis still time to get your two ducats in! Looking them over it seems that thereare very few complaints regarding the Shire and how it is run but as always Ilook forward to hearing of new points of view or ideas for our humble littleShire. My fondest regards False Isle,HL Sabine de Provence, AA GDSSeneschal ladysabine@shaw.caInstructor Ecole D'EpeeCadet to Magister Albert Faulke of SanfordShire of False Isle www.falseisle.orgTir Righ , An Tir*Fidelitas cum Permotione

There he will pursuehis dreams in Game Design. Owain is already training inSound&Music Technology. They have great plans for joint ventures& I am sure we will hear their names in the news in short order.Gabriel left just weeks ago on board a plane that took him and manyothers from all over Canada to spend a year doing community servicewith Katimavik. In that program, he has met several other youngSCAdians, all of whom have been excited by Gabriel's passion forrapier fighting, & they are presently trying to make the connectionsto people who can help them learn more about it, a daunting task, asthe program moves them about our country, but I'm sure that theirpassion will prevail!Still at home in False Isle are Isabella, Ariana, and Sarah, busy withschooling, socializing, and dog-walking. This is a big year for Isabella& Ariana, as they will graduate from high school, & are anticipatingtheir moves out into the greater knowne world! And Sarah is in highschool, too... growing up before our eyes.Elizabeth and Ashley are now the eldest in their schools, with achance to demonstrate their leadership skills, and for Elizabeth, tolearn more about cooking, too! These two are the core and the hopefor the "new" youth contingent, as the older members grow up andmove away. Given their special qualities, we know they will be excellentleaders, mentors and role models for new young members. It has been a joy sponsoring all these young people. As they move on,I expect I may find that I, also, move on to different things, thoughstaying on to help Elizabeth & Ashley as I can will be a great pleasure.Persona-lly Yours,Lady Aline de Bruges, aka Aliyah bin Shiraz al-Malbec of Shalimar Daughter of the DesertDeputy Herald; Sponsor, Youth Contingent; Instructor, SewinglyJouspevdjoh!uif!Ofx!!NPT!.Mpse!B{fnbs!!Greetings unto the populace of False Isle,For many years now, I have had the honor to be Master of Stablesfor this great shire. Mermaid’s Tourneybythe AutocratsMermaid’s Tourney was a bit different this year. We had 281 peopleattending which is our highest number yet. We were honouredby the presence of the Prince and Princess of Tir Righ and honouredyet again by having Prince Kheron fight in our heavy tourney.Just for a little nostalgia, Prince Kheron was the winner of our veryfirst Mermaid’s Tourney seven years ago!The rain came and went all weekend, but did not appear todampen any spirits. And there were a lot of spirits going around weobserved, especially on Saturday evening as we bid a sad farewell totwo of our founding members, Lord Thorvald and Lady Elfgiva. They are now living in the Barony of Castel Rouge, which is in thePrincipality of North Shield. We wish them the best of luck andwill miss them dearly. We had a great turn out in all disciplines. It was one of the largestboffer tournaments that we have ever seen. The children enjoyedthemselves immensely as did the audience. The future of heavyfighters in the Principality of Tir Righ is certainly bright. We alsohad the largest turn out for heavy fighters to date; the archery wasfantastic as always, and the rapier fighters reported they were happyto have all the steel they could eat. As judges of the rapier trials, wewould like to see that happen again next year. It was extremely entertainingthanks to a few lovely ladies and the very eloquent cavaliers. There was yet another celebration of love this year with a beautifulceremony for our good friends Genevieve and Richarde who exchangedtheir vows. Is there something romantic in the air at Mermaid’s??Be warned! The flaming arrows were serene, yet eerily beautiful. They flew farand well, burned long and bright and were a breathtaking medievalmoment. For all those who helped make Mermaid’s Tourney 2004 happen, wethank you from the bottom of our hearts! It is your help that makesit all possible.Art by Dente475 E. Huguenots post their Banns at Mermaid’sUnlike some Huguenot weddings in period (above left) the ceremonies of His Lordship Richarde Touchet& Her Ladyship Genevieve D'Clarveaux, both of the Shire of Lionsdale, (above left, centre) went withoutincident in the Current Middle Ages. TheShire of False Isle was a beautiful and romantic backdrop for our twilight ceremony. Our attendants were, Her Ladyship Sofia Marika Traum von Trifels, Loewyn,Tremayne de Clairvaux, Don Ewan MacLaren, Dona Diana, Mugain Brecc ingen ungail and Lord Richard Thomas. Her Ladyship Sabine deProvence officiated a most eloquent French Huguenot ceremony with her characteristic panache and humor. We were presented with tworose bushes entwined, representing friendship and passionate love, symbolic of a successful Union. We “jumped over the broomstick”, andexchanged gloves and vows after heartwarming words and hugs from Don Ewan and Dona Diana. We were graced with the musical talentsof violinist, Thormot, and vocalists Svana and Constance who chose two touching period melodies for us, sung with their angelic voices, inFrench. We were honored by the Presence of Their Highnesses Prince Kheron and Princess Ksenia, Baron Devon and Baroness Aurora ofLions Gate and Baron James and Baroness Glynis of Seagirt. We concluded the festivities at Don Albert and Her Ladyship Szuzu’s pavilionwith gorgeously decorated cheesecake and chocolate cake made by Adela and Sofia accompanied by Effie & Edward’s Wobbly Goose mead.We wish to thank Adela who procured, transported and arranged the beautiful flowers for our ceremony and Lady Tabytha for her photographyskills. A special thank you to His Lordship Owyn of Clan Frog who researched the ceremony, the Banns de Marriage, and a history ofthe French Huguenots. These were beautifully presented in print as a souvenir booklet by our very talented and generous friends from theShire of False Isle. Thank you to all who signed the booklet and expressed their best wishes. You made our wedding most memorable! Wewill post some photos soon. If you have photos to share please send to richardcavalier@yahoo.comMerci, Genevieve and RichardePope Agapetus IIA Roman by birth, elected to the papacy 10 May, 946; he reigned, not ingloriously, for ten years, during what has beentermed the period of deepest humiliation for the papacy. He proved that the true spiritual dignity of the papacy can be successfullyupheld by a saintly and resolute pontiff amid the most untoward surroundings. The temporal power had practicallyvanished and Rome was ruled by the vigorous Princeps and Senator Albericht, who was the prototype of the later Italian tyrants.Nevertheless, the name and virtues of Agapetus were respected throughout the entire Christian world. He labored incessantlyto restore the decadent discipline in churches and cloisters. He succeeded eventually in quieting the disturbances in themetropolitan see of Reims. He supported the Emperor Otto the Great in his plans for the evangelization of the heathens of theNorth. Seeing no other way of putting an end to anarchy in Italy, he joined with other Italian nobles in persuading the Emperorto make his first expedition into the peninsula. During his lifetime, his successor was virtually appointed in the personof Albericht's notorious son Octavian, later John XII, whose father forced the Romans to swear that they would elect him astheir temporal and spiritual lord upon the demise of Agapetus. The Pope died in August, 956, leaving an unsullied name, andwas buried in St. John Lateran. The Know your Popes column is compiled fromFather Dougall of Tooban(a very small village between Fahan and Burnfoot) http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/The New Advent: The Catholic Encyclopedia

Nfejfwbm!Gpsnt!pg!Beesftt!!HL Yolande ChastellainOctober 10, 2003Adapted from "Courtesy and Etiquette in the Current Middle Ages" by Mistress Diana Listmaker, 1972The basic rule for attendance at Society events is that the participant behave as a lady or gentleman. To this end, using medieval forms ofaddress is considered good etiquette. Use people's Society names and titles, not their mundane (or modern) ones, even if you know themwell. In the Middle Ages, even close relatives addressed or referred to each other formally - "Salute me to Sir Lancelot, my lord father," saysGalahad. Nicknames were for peasants. Although colourful epithets were often attached to names - King Charles the Bald, Frederick Barbarossa- one assumes that most of these were not used to the nominee's face. Formality in social relationships is an indication that familiarityhas not bred contempt. And not only is it authentic to keep language medieval, it is almost a psychological necessity if an authentic atmosphereis to be created at Society events. If you don't know somebody's name, address him or her as "my lord" or "my lady", not "hey you!"TITLEFORMS OF ADDRESS (Your, His, Her, Their)RoyaltyKing & QueenCrown Prince & Crown PrincessPrince & PrincessHeirs to Prince & Princess (Tanist & ban-Tanist)Lions of An TirRoyal PeersDuke / DuchessCount / CountessViscount / ViscountessTerritorial Barons & BaronessesPeersOrder of the Chivalry (Knights)Master at ArmsOrders of the Laurel / PelicanGrants of ArmsJambe de Lion / Goutte de Sang /Grey Goose Shaft / Hasta Leonis / White ScarfFounding & Former Barons & BaronessesCourt Barons & BaronessesAward of ArmsPeople without awards -- Your Majesty- Your Royal Highness- Your Highness- Your Excellency- Your Excellency- Your Grace- Your Excellency- Your Excellency- Your Excellency- Sir, Your Excellency- Sir, Your Excellency- Master, Mistress, Your Excellency- Your Lordship, Your Ladyship OR The Right Honourable- Your Excellency- Your Excellency- Lord, Ladymy lord, my ladyNote that the adjectives (your, his, her, their) change depending on to whom it is your speaking. Fiddling Aboutwith Lord TlhormotI moved to the wonderful Shire of False Isle in August 2003 ASxxxix, fiddle in hand, looking forward to making music with friendsas I love to do. HL Stephen of Hunmanby had previously organizedmusic nights here in the shire, and he and I together restarted them, beginning with a bang when more than a dozen people showed up atLord Bartholomew and Lady Arianwen's country estate for the firstmeeting. We moved our meeting place around during the year, experimenting with James Thompson school gym (too big and impersonal),and members homes, and eventually settling at Lord Geoffreyand Lady Calindra's castle in Cranberry. We played a lot of rounds or canons, something that allows instrumentalistsand singers to join together in many combinations; wetook recorder lessons from HL Stephen; we played some period musicfor instrumental consort; we did a good deal of talking & laughing. One evening we even played the Pachelbel Canon, which was outof period and scary but fun! Some people have been encouraged topick up instruments from long ago and play them again (there's aviola in someone's attic waiting to be rescued... you know who youare!). At the Ithra last year some of us did a class in ElizabethanMadrigal singing and we'd like to do more. A little harder than justsinging rounds, but very much worth it.If you like to sing, or you play an instrument, or you'd like to learn, please come and join us. Although some of what we play needs youto read music, many tunes are simple to learn by ear so you don'tneed to read music to join in. We'll be graced with a cello this yearbut more lower register instruments would be welcome too. Afterthe number of drummers always on hand in Lions Gate I neverthought I would say this, but percussion would be a good thing!Want to join us? Talk to Thormot or just turn up at a music night, always advertised ahead of time on the Mermaid list.Gbmtf!Jtmf!Dbo!Dppl!Master Rory shows False Isle’s new braziers. Sicilian CookeryCaltanissettan Poultry Stuffing(Ripieno alla Nissena)The residents of Caltanissetta, a small city in centralSicily, are called Nisseni, and their mountainous regionis famous for meat and poultry dishes. This simple recipeoffers a pleasant alternative to meat-based chickenor turkey filling. Since the size of poultry, and measurementsby volume, can vary, I'll describe these by proportion.!Usbwfm!Tfdujpo!!///cfjoh!uif!bewfouvsft!pg!Gbmtf!Jtmfst!bcspbe!jo!cpuif!uif!Lopxof!Xpsme!!boe!uif!nvoebof!xpsme!Ingredients: 1 cup finely chopped white or yellow onions,1 cup grated hard Italian cheese (pecorino, madefrom sheep's milk, is preferred), 1 cup "southern style"bread crumbs (including the ground crust; "northernstyle" Italian bread crumbs are made without the bread'scrust), one half cup chopped fresh parsley, 2 mediumsizeeggs (or 1 extra large one), one-half teaspoonground white pepper (black pepper may be substituted),1teaspoon virgin olive oil, salt to taste.Preparation: Mix the ingredients in a large bowl, kneadingthe mixture until it's uniform in consistency. !Gbmtf!Jtmf!!!bu!uif!!TfbMjpo!Xbs!“no I meant Mousekatteers and there are three of them after all”In keeping with the precedence set at May Crown aka May DrownSeaLion War was wet enough to keep even those with web feethappy. The site was quite lovely and common word had it that the ownersare very new to the Society and are so taken with it that they agreedto host this very large event. The False Isle contingent included Lady Effie and Ladies Elizabethand Ashley all who joined Lord Edward, Lord Thorvald and LadyElfgiva, Master Rory and Sabine My sister did join us for her very firstevent along with her young son Andrew who enjoyed the whole experiencemost splendidly and in particular the boffer competitionmightily as well as Archery and they plan on taking in more SCAevents. The Heavy fighting was a pitched battle with Master Rory and LordEdward stepping up nobly to defende Her Excellency, BaronessAurora of Lions Gate when she and a battalion of her archers wereaccosted by the "other side"...The rapier scenarios were well done and I stall have quite a grandmemory of my cadet brother Lord Finn racing down the field cacklingwith glee and clutching a purlioned sheep (will not insert Irishand-the-sheepcrack).The evening revel was quite a bash. False Isle played host to numerousgood gentles all coming in out of the rain (Merci Rory for insistingthat we bring the Shire pavilion). We were honoured when HerMajesty Celdae paid us a visit and did dance in Middle Eastern fashionand Don Prospere demonstrated a strange dance from somethingcalled "Saturday Night Fever". The Travels of Stephen and AliciaMay Crown...being a report of their Starnge and Marvelous AdventuresWe arrived at Crown in a lull between thundershowers, so we got set up in thedry, unlike a lot of people. In spite of the showers Friday night and Saturdaymorning, resulting in nasty muddy roads, the weather was generally much morepleasant than last year’s May Crown! Stephen taught one Ithra class on Latinwhich almost drew more students than he had handouts for. Alicia had a goodtime on the rapier field, but especially enjoyed a meeting with Don Indigo whosefighting style seemed particularly compatible with her.But the highlight of the event for us was, of course, witnessing Rory Woulfe calledbefore Their Majesties to be elevated to the Order of the Laurel. This was especiallygratifying to us as we had been pressed into service by a couple of the Laurelsto assist in bringing this about. Aline and Thormot were given with Awards ofArms in absentia to be presented at a later date by our Prince and Princess (whichhappened at Mermaid’s Tourney).Highland-Fjord WarHighland/Fjord War is an annual event, between the forces of Krakafjord and Dregate, held this year in Krakafjord at the manor of THLHengest the Saxon. We decided to attend this rather than Sealion War because it Krakafjord was a place we had not yet visited and was agood start on our eastward journey. Their Highnesses were pleased to have Alicia there also as few others of Their retinue were in attendance. The weather was showery, and believe me when they have a shower in Krakafjord, they have a SHOWER!Watching the war scenarios was amusing: at one point His Highness was left alone against several opposing heavies, so he ran away and theyfollowed, and when they were nicely strung out He turned and slew the nearest. He managed to repeat this a couple more times before theygot the idea to stay together to face Him. It was also good to see archers on the field. For the rapier point, Alicia was asked to fight for Dregate, as they were outnumbered. This of course swung the tide in favour of Dregate. The Seneschal of Dregate later presented her with a sheep as payment for her mercenary services. In the evening Stephen was asked to judge the Bardic competition. Hengest had cunningly appointed three judges so that a tie vote was impossible.Unfortunately, two very different pieces stood out above all the rest, so one judge voted for one, and one for the other. After deliberatingthe final verdict overnight, Stephen had to flip a coin to decide his vote. They were both most worthy of winning! And, as always, one of the delights of attending events in new places is the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends.Frozen MountainAfter Highland/Fjord War we continued East to the Shire of Frozen Mountain, the easternmost group in Tir Righ. We had arranged to attenda special rapier practice and potluck supper, which they put on in honour of our visit - that is how rare and welcome visitors are! Aliciagave them a number of pointers to improve their rapier techniques. Afterward we had a delightful supper and talked far into the night.June InvestitureWe next travelled to Ravensweir for June Investiture, giving one of the ladies of Frozen Mountain a ride there. It is a 13-hour drive fromFrozen Mountain to Ravensweir, which brings out just how big our Principality is. The Investiture site was quite nice: grassy slopes next to alake. It has great potential as an event site with a little imagination and organization. . The weather for the event was a mixture of sun andthunder showers.Since we were the first members of Kheron and Ksenia’s retinue to arrive, Alicia had been given the job of Camp Warden, that is organizinghow everyone was arranged within the reserved space- an interesting challenge when people show up unexpectedly, or don’t arrive, or comewith different sized tents than they said! Since no one seemed upset about where they were placed, I suppose she succeeded. Stephen taughtan Ithra class introducing people to Latin, which is always fun!I believe that there were about 150 people at the event - an unprecedentedly huge event for Ravensweir! Some people thought that Ravensweirwas a rather remote location for a Principality event, but when I compared driving times I found that actually it is about half way betweenCae Mor and Shittimwoode. So that is where the geographical center of Tir Righ is!Then we travelled back to Lions Gate - a 9-hour drive. Just north of Clinton we passed through and extremely intense thundershower involvingheavy hail, snow and rain, and so dark in the middle of the afternoon that we really needed the headlights! From Lions Gate we returnedhome after our wanderings through the Principality.

Tvqqpsufst! We really are trying hard to keep this magazine and Poor Drogo’s Almanac regularly mailed out free of charge to the populace of FalseIsle. So far, so good. The limited size of our membership here in the Shire keeps the costs low.
