PHOTO: MARGARET MOLLOYBEYOND the CALIFORNIA WILDFIRESWhen Damon Taugher, Direct Relief ’sDirector of Domestic Initiatives, delivered a presentation to the NationalAssociation of Community HealthCenters’ (NACHC) annual Policy &Issues Forum in Washington, D.C. thispast March, he had two purposes.SINCE 2004Direct Relief has delivered supportto at-risk patients living in theUnited States on an ongoing basisand during times of emergency, totaling over 3,000 shipmentsof medicine and suppliesvalued at $125 million (wholesale),containing over 6 millionprescriptions, and more than$5 million in cash assistance.Direct Relief, along with clinics nationwide, is using the response to last year’s blazesto strengthen emergency preparednessThe first was to discuss Direct Relief ’sresponse to the wildfires that burnedthroughout California in late 2007.Along with colleagues from the CaliforniaPrimary Care Association and MountainHealth and Community Services in SanDiego County – a clinic that became aCALIFORNIAWILDFIRE SUPPORT RECAPshelter and a staging point for variousemergency services during the wildfires–he covered the benefits of partnershipsthat helped Direct Relief delivermedicine, medical supplies, and financialassistance to clinics and shelters duringthe weeks-long evacuation period.HearDr. Felix Nuñez from theCommunity Clinic Association ofLos Angeles County speak abouthow low-income patients receivecare – Direct Relief ’s Shareholders’Meeting, May 15 th .FLIP TO THE BACK PAGE…THE FIRES…Caused 10 deathsBurned 516,000 acresDisplaced more than 880,000 So. As he sees it,the same principles and systems usedto connect Direct Relief and othergroups to the Golden State’s networkof NACHC members could also beused to create a template for regionallyappropriateemergency preparednessand response nationwide.“Creating strong relationships priorto disasters is crucial for efficientcoordination in post-disastersituations,” said Taugher. “Thesepartnerships allow for critical resourcesto reach people most often at risk.”Partnering with NACHC gives DirectRelief access to the largest associationof nonprofit health centers in theUnited States. Between its 7,000 healthcenters and clinics, NACHC membersprovide services to roughly 16 millionpatients a year, approximately 41percent of whom are uninsured. This broad reach, especially amonguninsured Americans, is also a criticalbenefit for the partnership’s other aim:getting medicines and supplies intothe hands of nonprofit health centersand clinics that treat patients withouthealthcare coverage. Working withNACHC, its state-level counterpartassociations, and individual clinics,Direct Relief has delivered $125 millionin medicines for working-poor, uninsuredpatients nationwide since 2004.VIVIR conDIABETESen BoliviaAs daunting as these statistics are, the day-to-dayrealities of living with diabetes in an area withoutadequate care are far worse. Fortunately, the manyhealth complications related to diabetes can be minimizedor eliminatedentirely through earlydetection and changesin daily lifestyle.Nineteen million people areestimated to have diabetes inLatin America and the Caribbean–according to the InternationalDiabetes Foundation –AND THAT NUMBER ISEXPECTED TO DOUBLE TO40 MILLION BY2025.Dr. Elizabeth DuarteGomez confrontedthe crisis in Bolivia –where 4.8% of thepopulation is diabetic(IDF, 2003) – whenshe founded the nonprofit El Centro Vivir ConDiabetes (CVCD). Dr. Duarte, an endocrinologisttrained in Spain, placed the organization at groundzero of the disease, in the city of Cochabamba, whereCVCD estimates 9.4% of adults are suffering fromdiabetes. For seven years, the CVCD clinic has been at theforefront of diabetic support in Bolivia, focusing onlifestyle education and nutritional counseling alongwith providing treatment for the most commondiseases that accompany diabetes. By providingextensive health education and promoting healthyeating habits, the clinic’s small but dedicated staffworks against the lifestyle trends that increase theincidence of diabetes. The clinic’s outreach servicesstrive for early detection and diagnosis, and its mainclinic provides complimentary treatment for thosewho have developed related visual, neural, andcirculatory problems.Direct Relief has supported CVCD since its inceptionwith primary care medicines and medical suppliesthat aid the treatment of diabetes-related conditions.Abbott has come to CVCD’s aid with blood glucosemeters and test strips critical to early detectionand monitoring, allowing for control of the diseasethrough regular clinic visits and education. Thecompany’s philanthropic foundation has alsoprovided cash grants to bolster the clinic’s outreachservices. With this help, CVCD has gone mobile. Over 13,000people have been screened for diabetes in eight of thenine major Bolivian cities by clinic staff in the last fouryears. Of those screened, CVCD discovered that 7.9%had previously undiagnosed cases of diabetes. Thosediagnosed learned from the outset how to properlymanage their diabetes, and by living healthier lives, they will impact less an already financially strappedpublic health system. In addition toscreenings, CVCDhas distributedprinted materialsexplaining diabetesmanagement, conductedgroup andindividual diseaseeducation usingAbbott-contributedglucose meters and strips, and trained 604 healthprofessionals (doctors, nurses, and pharmacists) onthe latest diabetes detection and treatment methods.“THE HAPPINESS WE FEEL AT BEING ABLE TO GIVE TO THOSE IN NEED,WITHOUT WORRYING ABOUT WHAT IT COSTS, IS INDESCRIBABLE.DIRECT RELIEF AND ABBOTT PROVIDE US WITH MATERIALS FOR QUALITYMEDICAL CARE, AND THUS ALLOW OUR DREAMS TO COME TRUE.”– Elizabeth Duarte Gomez, M.D., El Centro Vivir Con Diabetes Founder and DirectorSINCE 1982CVCD staff test aQuechuan womanfor diabetes withAbbott-donatedproducts duringone of CVCD’soutreach anddetectioncampaigns to theprovince of Cliza,Bolivia.
