Some ofthese valleys are remains of large glaciers,such as the valley southwards of Manteigas.The characteristic U-shape of this valley canbe recognized in the field easily. But alsosmaller valleys with steep slopes occur inSerra da Estrela. These valleys are formedby small streams that eroded the slopes ofthe Serra. The villages in the valleys areusually not very large. One of the largestvillages in the Natural Park is Loriga, wherethe camp site was located. Most of thehouses and other buildings are maintainedwell, but on several locations desertedfactories and other buildings can be found.Some deserted villages such as Varzea andSerapitel proved to be important hidingplaces for bat colonies.2.3 CLIMATESerra da Estrela forms an obstacle for the winds coming from the Atlantic Ocean. The western slopes of theSerra as well as the higher parts of the park are therefore influenced by an Atlantic climate. The observationsdescribed in this report were mostly made in this western part of the Serra da Estrela. A more Mediterraneclimate can be found on the eastern slopes of the mountain. In the highest parts of the park the lowesttemperatures are recorded. Snow is common during the winter season (some ski accommodations arepresent) but in the summer temperatures up to 20ºC are reached. On lower altitudes the slopes of themountain are heated by the sun and temperatures can rise to much higher levels.Because of the large amount of precipitationin the higher parts of the area (up to 2,500mm a year – mainly during the winterseason), small water streams run over theslopes of the Serra during a large part of theyear. One day of the camp proved to be theexception to the rule which says that rainfall insummer is low; it rained almost all day anddense fog formed in the area around LagoaComprida. Sometimes the valleys have theirown micro-climate. During the summer campclouds could be observed which seemed tobe “stuck” in a valley. The water temperaturesare very low, even in the summer. Moststreams and lakes are to cold to be enteredwith bare feet.
