III. The <strong>com</strong>petition rounds22. The Adolphe Sax Competition falls <strong>in</strong>to <strong>in</strong> threedifferent rounds:a) a prelim<strong>in</strong>ary round, which aims at select<strong>in</strong>g 18 candidateswho will be allowed to take part <strong>in</strong> the semi-f<strong>in</strong>als;b) the semi-f<strong>in</strong>als to select 6 f<strong>in</strong>alists;c) the f<strong>in</strong>al round to determ<strong>in</strong>e their order of merit.23. The candidates will present themselves for thedifferent rounds <strong>in</strong> the order determ<strong>in</strong>ed by the ballot.24. All rounds are public and can be radio broadcasted,televised or recorded with the approval of the Competition’sOrganis<strong>in</strong>g Committee and accord<strong>in</strong>g to the terms andconditions set out by the Committee.25. Dur<strong>in</strong>g each round, the candidates must have theirorig<strong>in</strong>al musical scores, unless the work is not or no longerpublished. The candidates should ensure that they wearappropriate dress for the occasion.26. The Competition’s Organis<strong>in</strong>g Committee will exam<strong>in</strong>ethe quality of each programme submitted by the candidateto the <strong>com</strong>petition and is allowed to ask the candidateto modify his/her programme, if necessary, to guarantee<strong>com</strong>pliance with the Rules. No change to the programme willbe accepted on the part of the candidate. Non-<strong>com</strong>pliancewith this provision results <strong>in</strong> automatic exclusion of thecandidate.27. Each candidate to the f<strong>in</strong>als will have the samerehearsal duration with the orchestra.28. Each candidate who reaches the semi-f<strong>in</strong>als or thef<strong>in</strong>als, must participate <strong>in</strong> these rounds, except <strong>in</strong> case ofillness or accident. At the end of the prelim<strong>in</strong>ary rounds,18 candidates are selected. At the end of the semi-f<strong>in</strong>als,six f<strong>in</strong>alists are selected.Ballot<strong>in</strong>g of candidates29. The purpose of the ballot is to determ<strong>in</strong>e thecandidate’s order of attendance. For the prelim<strong>in</strong>aryround, candidates will present themselves <strong>in</strong> alphabeticalorder, start<strong>in</strong>g with a letter drawn by the Competition’sOrganis<strong>in</strong>g Committee <strong>in</strong> the presence of the Presidentof the Jury, the General Secretary of the Jury and twowitnesses.Candidates will receive the order of attendance fixed forthe prelim<strong>in</strong>ary round by ord<strong>in</strong>ary mail.30. The candidates selected for the semi-f<strong>in</strong>als will receivean <strong>in</strong>dividual order of attendance, valid for the semi-f<strong>in</strong>alsof the Competition.31. The candidates selected for the f<strong>in</strong>al round will receivean <strong>in</strong>dividual order of attendance for the f<strong>in</strong>al round of theCompetition.32. If follow<strong>in</strong>g a case of force majeure, candidatescannot be present when the results of the prelim<strong>in</strong>aryround and/or the semi-f<strong>in</strong>als are declared, they have tojustify their absence <strong>in</strong> due time and, on written request,a person chosen by them will represent them and get the<strong>in</strong>formation. The candidate has to <strong>in</strong>quire immediately,from the Competition’s Organis<strong>in</strong>g Committee, about theday and time he/she has to be at the Jury’s disposal.33. For all the rounds, the order of attendance<strong>com</strong>municated by the Competition’s Organis<strong>in</strong>g Committeemay only be changed <strong>in</strong> case of force majeure. The candidatehas to justify the change. The Arbitration Committee willexam<strong>in</strong>e the reasons put forward and decide as provided<strong>in</strong> the procedure.The changes decided will only be valid for the roundconcerned.Prelim<strong>in</strong>ary rounds34. At the end of the prelim<strong>in</strong>ary rounds, 18 candidateswill be selected for the semi-f<strong>in</strong>als.35. Candidates will present themselves <strong>in</strong> the establishedorder of attendance, before the International Jury. All thecandidates have to take part <strong>in</strong> these rounds.36. Each candidate will present two works:- 1 <strong>com</strong>pulsory work with piano, specially written for the<strong>com</strong>petition. Candidates who are not selected at the end of theprelim<strong>in</strong>ary rounds will be free of any obligation to theInternational Adolphe Sax Competition. Art. 14 also rema<strong>in</strong>s<strong>in</strong> force. Ac<strong>com</strong>modation provided by the Competition’sOrganis<strong>in</strong>g Committee will not be ensured anymore, exceptby private arrangement between the host family and thecandidate.Semi-f<strong>in</strong>als40. The purpose of the semi-f<strong>in</strong>als is to select 6f<strong>in</strong>alists.41. Candidates will present themselves <strong>in</strong> the orderof attendance fixed by the ballot (see 30), before theInternational Jury. Candidates who are not selected at the end of thesemi-f<strong>in</strong>als will be free of any obligation to the AdolpheSax Competition. Art. 14 also rema<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> force.Ac<strong>com</strong>modation provided to the candidate by the wel<strong>com</strong>eCommittee will not be ensured anymore, except byprivate arrangement between the host family and thecandidate.F<strong>in</strong>al round46. Each of the six f<strong>in</strong>alists who has performed to the f<strong>in</strong>alwill be entitled to claim the title of “Prizew<strong>in</strong>ner of the4 th International Adolphe Sax Competition”.47. The f<strong>in</strong>als will determ<strong>in</strong>e the order of merit of the sixcandidates.48. Candidates will present themselves <strong>in</strong> the orderof attendance fixed by the ballot (see 31) before theInternational Jury. All prizew<strong>in</strong>ners must presentthemselves for this round.49. The f<strong>in</strong>al round <strong>in</strong>cludes the performance of thefollow<strong>in</strong>g works:1. a <strong>com</strong>pulsory work, specially written for thisCompetition, to be performed with orchestra; the f<strong>in</strong>alistwill play the <strong>com</strong>pulsory work first. The six prizew<strong>in</strong>ners will receive a Saxicare, a work bythe Belgian sculptor Félix Roul<strong>in</strong>, sculptor of the monument“Homage to Adolphe Sax”, and an orig<strong>in</strong>al diploma by theengraver Jean Coulon, signed by the President and theMembers of the Jury.Rules53. The rules <strong>in</strong> the present booklet are extracted from theGeneral Rules and conta<strong>in</strong> only the clauses concern<strong>in</strong>g thecandidates of the International Adolphe Sax Competition.The General Rules provide other arrangements namelyfor the guidance of the International Jury and themark<strong>in</strong>g procedure and is at the disposal of duly enrolledcandidates, on demand at the follow<strong>in</strong>g email address:evelyne.prescler@d<strong>in</strong>ant.be.54.
