<strong>Area</strong> Highlights<strong>Drury</strong>-<strong>Mincy</strong> <strong>Conservation</strong> <strong>Area</strong> is in southernTaney County, southeast <strong>of</strong> Branson, <strong>of</strong>f <strong>of</strong>Highway J. The area, located in the heart <strong>of</strong> theWhite River glade region, was the <strong>Conservation</strong><strong>Department</strong>’s first deer refuge. The area isnamed for early landowner Frank <strong>Drury</strong> and thesettlement <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mincy</strong>. The Commission leased theland in 1939, and then purchased it in 1987.At present, the area is comprised <strong>of</strong> 5,599 acres.Of that, approximately 3,400 acres are forested.By the turn <strong>of</strong> the century, deer numbers haddwindled to the point that <strong>Missouri</strong> couldclaim only 14 herds. One <strong>of</strong> these lived in the<strong>Drury</strong>-<strong>Mincy</strong> area. The area was purchased bya private landowner in 1929, who worked withthe <strong>Department</strong> to increase deer numbers. From1939 through 1959, <strong>Drury</strong>-<strong>Mincy</strong> deer weresuccessfully used to restore populations statewide.The <strong>Drury</strong>-<strong>Mincy</strong> area, one <strong>of</strong> 3 areas thatsupported flocks <strong>of</strong> native wild turkeys, provided300 turkeys for statewide restoration projectsduring the 1960s. Bluestem glades and post oaksavannas dominated the rolling hills. <strong>Mincy</strong>,Fox, and Bee creeks wind through stands <strong>of</strong> wildcane on their way to Bull Shoals Lake. Purplebeardtongue, fringetree, and Ashe juniper areamong the unusual plants found on the area.Driving DirectionsGo 5 miles east <strong>of</strong> Branson on Highway 76,then 6 miles south on Route J, and ¾ mile onGunnison Road.Recreational OpportunitiesBird Watching –Fishing – Hiking – Hunting -Outdoor Photography - Wildlife Viewing<strong>Conservation</strong> <strong>Area</strong>s are closed from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.except for authorized camping, fishing, and hunting.• No littering.• No Fireworks.• Hiking is permitted on interior roads and trails.• Primitive camping is permitted in spotsdesignated on the area map.• Campers are limited to 14 consecutive days in a30-day period. Groups <strong>of</strong> 10 or more campers arerequired to obtain a special-use permit.• Motor vehicles are allowed on public roadwaysand in parking areas.• Nuts, berries, fruits, mushrooms, and wild greensmay be taken for personal use. Cutting or removingother vegetation is prohibited. Digging <strong>of</strong> roots isprohibited on all <strong>Department</strong> areas.• No free-running pets. Dogs must me leashed orconfined when not used for training or huntingpurposes.•Horseback riding is limited to roads designated asgravel roads on the area map.• Special-use permits are required for field andretriever trials.• Guiding for pay is prohibited on all <strong>Department</strong>areas.Fishing and BoatingFishing and frogging are allowed under statewideregulation with the following exceptions:• Boats may be used only for fishing andwildlife activities and may not be left unattendedovernight.
