Bone marrow tr<strong>an</strong>spl<strong>an</strong>ts<strong>an</strong>d immunotherapy are also methodsof treatment.This month we give you information on:CHEMOTHERAPYHere are some of the drugs used during chemotherapy:Signs <strong>an</strong>d symptoms of childhood c<strong>an</strong>cer...Continued, unexplained weight lossHeadaches, often with early morning vomitingIncreased swelling or persistent pain in bones,joints, back, or legsLump or mass, especially in the abdomen, neck,chest, pelvis, or armpitsDevelopment of excessive bruising, bleeding, or rashConst<strong>an</strong>t infectionsA whitish color behind the pupilNausea which persists or vomiting without nauseaConst<strong>an</strong>t tiredness or noticeable palenessEye or vision ch<strong>an</strong>ges which occur suddenlyRecurrent or persistent fevers of unknown origin- Vincristine: it comes from the periwinklepl<strong>an</strong>t <strong>an</strong>d acts on dividing cells <strong>an</strong>d is giveninto a vein (IV).- Prednisone or Decadron: it is a hormone<strong>an</strong>d acts by killing lymphocytes. This is given as a shot usually into amuscle.- Daunorubicin or Adriamycin: they are agroup of <strong>an</strong>tibiotics <strong>an</strong>d they stop cells frommaking RNA <strong>an</strong>d DNA so that cells c<strong>an</strong>’t grow<strong>an</strong>d divide. They are given as <strong>an</strong> IV shot.- Methotrexate: it is one of a group of drugscalled <strong>an</strong>timetabolites <strong>an</strong>d acts by stoppingcells from making new DNA so they c<strong>an</strong>’t divide.It is given as a spinal tap, as a pill, <strong>an</strong>IV or IM.- 6-Mercaptopurine: is also <strong>an</strong> <strong>an</strong>timetabolite<strong>an</strong>d is given either as a pill or as <strong>an</strong> IV shot- Cytosine arabinoside: it is <strong>an</strong>other <strong>an</strong>timetabolite<strong>an</strong>d is given as a shot either IV orunder the skin.- 6-Thiogu<strong>an</strong>ine: is <strong>an</strong>other <strong>an</strong>timetabolite<strong>an</strong>d comes as a pill.- 5-Azacytidineit acts by confusing a cell <strong>an</strong>dit stops making protein <strong>an</strong>d therefore doesn’tgrow <strong>an</strong>ymore.
