4Summer projectTo be presented Thursday of Induction WeekPersonal Learning Journal, Stage 1Using visuals (drawing, painting, photocopies, photography collage etc.), we would like you tocreate a personal journal that explains who youare. It is not just meant to be facts and figures; itis meant to express your thoughts, feelings andpersonality. It can be about your past, presentor future, maybe an incident in your life thatyou think has been influential in shaping youas a creative. It can be about friends, family,memories...anything! We just want to seeinteresting and unique sketchbooks. It isn’t ascrap book, or a simple photo album – use youimagination, expressing your dreams, hopes, secrets, ambitions. There can be some writing(annotation) but the more you can express yourideas using visuals the better.www.ucreative.ac.ukDuring your progress on this course you will beexpected to keep a personal journal. Although itmay seem like an obvious point to make, the moreinformation you record about your own work andthe work of others, the more information youwill have at your disposal as you develop on thecourse.A journal is a record of your interaction withthis course and the rest of the world aroundyou. It records your journey, inspirations and isa way of contextualising your work and thoughtprocesses. This is where you should collect visualstimulus and reflect and comment upon who youare, what you have seen, where you have beenand what you have learnt. More importantlyyou should become more aware of how thesethings influence you and your work. Your journalmust also demonstrate your engagement withfashion – the designers, photographers, stylists, illustrators and brands that interest you.

5Summer projectWriting about and reflecting upon your journal willhelp with your work both visually and in writingwill help you to become a better artist/designer.It will help you to evaluate your own work, andthe work of others in critiques and classes. If youdon’t without self-analysis and critical evaluation, your ideas and work will never change or develop.Make sure you take ownership of this journal andlet it reflect you and your interests. There are nofixed rules. You will present yourself and your journal withingroup critiques during the induction week.Think about the following reflective questions inpreparation for your critique:• Why you collected or recorded the image oridea?• How you could use it to inspire your work?• What does it communicate about you whatcould it say to a viewer?Your journal is a vital part of your experience andas an FPI student you will produce many journalsthroughout the years. Make the journal work foryou and enjoy recording and exploring within it.A journal can be in book or file form it is yourchoice. Journals are different to sketchbooks asthey are more ‘open’ and wide ranging whereasa sketchbook is for a specific project/theme andis about the development of that project. Thejournal is the wider context for your work andlinks all areas of the course together and is abouthow you see the world.Aimwww.ucreative.ac.ukThis brief is about you showing us your skills andfor us to get to know you better; to encouragepitching skills through interacting with a smallgroup discussion with tutors presenting yourjournal.

6Summer projectwww.ucreative.ac.ukOutcomeThe Journal will introduce you to the formatexpected and encourage critical awareness ofyour work. The project will also feed directly intoboth the first two units of Semester 1: Introductionto Fashion Promotion and Introduction to Stylingand Photography. Please bring with you on the first day or you willbe expected to talk about yourself without it andwill be unprepared for the first projects.Reflection on project work• How would you rate your finished work –Excellent, good, poor, disaster? Then askyourself why?• What do you think you have learned?• Looking back, what would you have donedifferently?• Is the outcome different from what you originallythought? Were you surprised with what youended up with? If so in what way?• What would you do differently in retrospect andhow can this inform your next project?Nikola Lamburov & Aaro Murphy

7Summer projectGeneral reflection• Why you collected or recorded the image oridea?• How you could use it to inspire your work (ifrelated)?• What does it communicate to you what could itsay to a viewer? You should also include in your journal, dated diaryentries of your progress to ensure that you includeinformation on when something goes well, or notso well, you may find a solution or way of workingwhich is successful for you. Include your thoughtsand ideas as you progress through projects. Alsoinclude discussions you have with other studentsand staff – you can’t write everything down butyou may include record sheets from tutorials forexample, or notes from when other people talkabout how they dealt with a project if it is relevantto you – it is especially interesting when peoplehave approached something in a very differentway to you.www.ucreative.ac.ukA journal can be in book or file form – it is yourchoice. Journals are different to sketchbooks asthey are more ‘open’ and wide ranging whereasa sketchbook is for a specific project/theme andis about the development of that project.Your Journal will be assessed as part of yourresearch and analysis process and will besubmitted alongside unit requirements throughthe course to explain your approach, ways ofcommunicating and learning. It is also central tothe reflecting practice unit in your second yearwhere it forms a major assessment requirementand journal work will directly inform your finalmajor project in your third year. So start a journalnow don’t worry about whether you are doingit right and enjoy collecting, finding out andreflecting on who you are.
