Technical Data SheetUltraplus UVPUV screen printing ink for varioussubstrates like rigid PVC, polystyrene, pretreated polyethylene (PE) andpolypropylene (PP), coated substrates, metals, and glassHigh gloss, fast curing, good opacity, very high resistance to chemicals, versatileapplicationVers. 04201321. JanField of ApplicationSubstratesUltraplus UVP is a universal UV screen printingink with very high resistances to chemicals, suitable e. g. for the following substrates:and Auxiliaries" where they are described indetail.Since all the print substrates mentioned may bedifferent in printability, even within an individualtype, preliminary trials are essential todetermine suitability for the intended use.• Pretreated PE and PP• powder and wet-coated substrates• Metals• Glass (decorative indoor use withoutinfluence of humidity)• Rigid PVC, polystyrene• ABS/SAN• PETG/PETA• PC• Self-adhesive PVC film• PMMABefore printing on PET and PP, please keep inmind that the none-polar and thus low surfacetension of the substrate surface must be treatedby flaming in the usual way. By this process, the surface tension will rise and from 48 — 54mN/m, a very good adhesion is possible. The surface treatment can be tested by appropriatetest inks or a water test where a wettedbottle must hold the closed water film forabout 20 sec. Furthermore, the substrate surfacemust be absolutely free of disturbing residuessuch as grease, oil, and finger sweat. With the adequate additives and auxiliaries,UVP adheres to some metals, such as e. g. brossedaluminium or strip steel and very decorativelyon glass, as well. How to use the adhesionmodifiers, please see chapters "AdditivesPage 1/5Field of useThe high-glossy Ultraplus UVP is used forcontainer printing, as well as graphical andindustrial screen printing where most criticalsubstrates (for UV inks) are used or if highestresistances to chemicals are demanded. In thiscase, UVP may also be used on self-adhesivefoils.Adhesion of Ultraplus UVP is very good onPVC, however, please mind the materialembrittlement of PVC in general (we always recommendpreliminary trials!).On die-cast parts of polystyrene, e.g. lipstickcases, you can achieve good adhesion, as well.CharacteristicsInk characteristicsAll Ultraplus UVP colour shades are brilliant athigh gloss and best possible opacity. Ultra-plusUVP has a hard cross-linking and will thereforebrittle in case of highest chemical andmechanical resistances.Due to this, UVP is hardly formable and cannotbe moulded. If you want to cut and punch inthe printed ink film, preliminary trials areessential.Adjustment of the inkUltraplus UVP is press-ready. However, pleasestir well before printing. Due to the varioussubstrates and different printing machines,Marabu GmbH & Co. Technical Data SheetUltraplus UVPprinting speeds and UV drying units existing inthe market, UVP can be modified with variousadditives in its reactivity, viscosity, andadhesion characteristics.CuringUltraplus UVP is a fast curing UV ink. A UVcuring unit with two medium pressureMercury Vapour Lamps (capacity 80 - 120W/cm) or one lamp (capacity 150 - 180W/cm) is cu-ring UVP at a belt speed of 10 -20 m/min or 4800 passes/h. Opaque WhiteUVP 170 and Opaque Black UVP 180 aredrying more slowly (approx. 15 m/min) dueto their high amount of pigments.Generally, the hardening speed of the inkdepends on the type of UV dryer (reflectors),the number, age and capacity of the UV tubes, the printed coat thickness, the colour shade, the used substrate and the belt speed (numberof passes) of the UV dryer.Ultraplus UVP is a slightly post-curing UV ink.The ink should pass a cross hatch tape test afterexiting the curing unit and cooled to roomtemperature. After 24 hours, the printed inkfilm achieves its maximum resistance to fillersand water as well as rub resistance.Fade resistancePigments of medium to good fade resistanceare used for all Ultraplus UVP shades. Therefore, the prints are suitable for indoor andlimited outdoor use up to one year in moderateCentral European climate. For shades mixed by adding a high percentage(>20 %) of white or varnish, we recommend anovercoat with our Special Binder UVP 904.Stress resistanceAfter proper and thorough drying, the ink filmexhibits outstanding adhesion as well as rub, scratch, and block resistance and is highlyresistant to solvents (see DIN 16 524), alcohol(Ethanol 99.8 %), finger sweat, battery acid, and other usual fillers. The resistance to watercan be increased by adding Adhesion ModifierPage 2/5UV-HV 4 or UV-HV 7 (according to the kindof drying).UVP is hardly formable and cannot bemoulded. If you want to cut and punch in theprinted ink film, preliminary trials areessential.RangeBasic shades – System UltracolorMarabu GmbH & Co. Mixing with otherink types or auxiliaries must be avoided inorder to maintain the special characteristics ofthis outstanding ink range. The pigments used in the above mentionedstandard shades, based on their chemicalstructure, correspond to the EEC regulationsEN 71/part 3, safety of toys - migration ofspecific elements.Due to possible direct contact with the mouth,we do not recommend to use this inkneither for baby bottles, toys, nor for foodpackaging in direct touch with food since thepossible presence of residual monomers anddecomposition products of the photoinitiatorscannot be excluded even whensufficiently cured.Marabu

Asubsequent heat-forced drying at160°C for 30min is very important. Pot life of the ink/hardener mixture is at least 8 h.UV-HV 7 can also be used on other substratessuch as metals or plastics. However, preliminary trials are essential.Thickening agent STMAddition:0.5 - 2 % parts by weightAuxiliary to enhance the ink viscosity withoutinfluencing significantly the degree of gloss. Please stir well! The use of an automatic mixingmachine is recommended. If an excessive amount is added, intercoatadhesion may be reduced. UV-VM must bestirred well.CleaningFor manual cleaning of screen printing stencilsand tools our cleaner UR 3 (flash point 42° C)or UR 4 (flash point 52°C) can be used.Ink residues mixed with adhesion modifiermust be removed from the screen immediatelyafter printing.Fabrics, stencilsSelection of fabric depends on the printingconditions, the desired curing speed and yieldas well as the required opacity. Generally, youcan use all fabrics from 120-34 to 180-27threads. Generally, a high even stretching ofthe fabric (>16 N) is important allowing asmooth ink application. For UV inks, allcommercially available capillary films (15-20µm) or solvent resistant photo emulsions andcombined stencils can be used.Thinner UVV2Addition:Page 4/51 - 10 % parts by weightThinner for decreasing the print viscosity, to beused on high-speed printing machines or forbronzes. If an excessive amount is added, curing speed and surface durability of theprinted ink film may be reduced. UVV2thinner will be chemically bonded in the inkfilm during UV curing.Levelling agent UV-VMAddition: 0.5 - 1.5 % parts by weightAuxiliary to rectify flow problems (e.g. bubblesetc.) which may be caused by residues on thesubstrate surface, or wrong press setting.MileageDepending on fabric and substrate, the approximateyield is about 60-80 sqm. per kg of ink.Shelf lifeShelf life is strongly depending on the formulation/reactivityof the ink system, as well ason the storage temperature. It is max. 2 yearsfor an originally closed can if stored in a darkplace at 15 - 25 °C. In the case of changed storingconditions and especially at higher storingtemperatures, shelf life will be reduced.
