Their goal was to gatherbaseline healthcare data that will be used todetermine whether or not the current healthcaresystem in Hohhot will be significantly improved bythe Grand Aides program.Water and Health in LimpopoRACHEL SMITHGeorge Lewis Scholar, Class of 2013Rachel was part of a JPC group that focused onimproving access to safe water and sanitationservices in the villagesof Tchibvumo andTshapasha in LimpopoProvince, SouthAfrica. Their researchstudied prior waterschemes and soughtto determine bestmethods for providingadequate clean waterto the villages. the scholarsfaculty advisory committee tothe undergraduate program 2009 -10Chaired by Maurie McInnis (<strong>Jefferson</strong> Scholar Class of 1988), the newly appointed associate deanfor undergraduate academic programs at the University, the Faculty Advisory Committee for theUndergraduate Program consists of faculty members who will assist the <strong>Foundation</strong> in two specificways. They will: 1) aid in recruiting new <strong>Jefferson</strong> <strong>Scholars</strong> by meeting with finalists during SelectionWeekend, serving on faculty panels or as seminar leaders, and following up afterwards with thosefinalists with whom they had significant interaction; 2) provide current <strong>Jefferson</strong> <strong>Scholars</strong> with betteraccess to faculty, particularly people to whom they can turn for informal advising. jefferson scholars foundation 20102010 enrichment speakersdavid laneIn October 2010, <strong>Scholars</strong> and Fellows gathered for an enrichment luncheon with U.Va. alumnusDavid Lane (Col ’82), president and chief executive officer of ONE, an advocacy and campaigningorganization focused on combating global poverty and preventable disease, with more than 2million members from around the world. Prior to joining the team at ONE, Lane was the directorof public policy and external affairs and director of the east coast office (located in Washington,D.C.) for the Bill & Melinda Gates <strong>Foundation</strong>. He also served in a number of senior positions inthe federal government, including executive director of the National Economic Council at theWhite House and chief of staff of the U.S. Department of Commerce. Lane spoke with <strong>Scholars</strong>and Fellows about the importance of advocacy and campaigning and shared some memorablestories about his travels around the world.brady lumIn April 2010, <strong>Scholars</strong> heard remarks from<strong>Jefferson</strong> Scholar alumnus Brady Lum,president and chief operating officer ofSpecial Olympics International. Lumshared stories from his time at theUniversity as a <strong>Jefferson</strong> Scholar and talkedabout his fifteen years at the Coca-ColaCompany, where he served in a variety ofleadership roles in operations, marketing,strategic planning, and organizationaldevelopment, including vice president,North America strategic planning andintegration. Lum has also served aschairman of the board of the NationalHands On Network, coordinating its recent merger with Points of Light <strong>Foundation</strong>. Hedelivered an important message, encouraging <strong>Scholars</strong> to say “yes” when opportunities forvolunteer involvement arise.
