Introduction:SURVEY OF LITURGICAL MUSICIN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE PARISHES OF CANADAJanuary 2007The Episcopal Commission for Liturgy (English Sector) established <strong>the</strong> National Council for LiturgicalMusic <strong>in</strong> January 2006. The purpose <strong>of</strong> this advisory body is to assist <strong>the</strong> Bishops <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir oversight <strong>of</strong><strong>music</strong> used dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>liturgical</strong> celebrations, as required by <strong>the</strong> General Instruction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> third edition <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Roman Missal.Monsignor Murray J. Kroetsch (Diocese <strong>of</strong> Hamilton) was appo<strong>in</strong>ted as <strong>the</strong> chairman <strong>of</strong> this advisorybody. The follow<strong>in</strong>g persons are presently members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Council: Sister Donna Kelly, CND(Diocese <strong>of</strong> St. George’s), Miss Christ<strong>in</strong>a Ronzio (Diocese <strong>of</strong> London), Mrs. Leslie Steele(Archdiocese <strong>of</strong> Edmonton), and Mr. John Dawson (Archdiocese <strong>of</strong> Toronto).Part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mandate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> National Council for Liturgical Music is to conduct an on-go<strong>in</strong>g review <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> <strong>music</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>liturgical</strong> celebrations across Canada.
