Mohan Kumar, Additional Secretary, Ministry ofWater Resources, New Delhi visited IMD on 23 rd June, 2011to familiarize with the forecasting techniques of IMD. AVM(Dr.) Ajit Tyagi, DGM welcomed Dr. G. Mohan Kumar andbriefed about the working of various units of IMD andintroduced him with the Senior Scientists of IMD. Shri S. C.Bhan, Scientist ‘E’ made a presentation of the organizationand functions of IMD on this occasion.WELFARE MEASUREA free health check up was conducted in IMD, New Delhi byMetro Hospital & Heart Institutes, New Delhi on 27‐28 April2011 for the welfare of IMD’s Employees. More than 150officials including senior officers availed this facility whichshows how people are health conscious. In general, this typeof campaign has been appreciated by all.10PUBLICATIONS‣ Quantitative Crop Yield Forecast for Rabi Wheatfor 16 Sub‐divisions for April & May 2011 wasprepared.‣ Biweekly Aridity Anomaly Reports for Southwestmonsoon season 2011 for the period 4‐17 June 2011and two weekly Aridity Anomaly maps for the periodof 4‐10 & 11‐17 June 2011 were prepared.‣ Three Drought Outlook Maps for the period of 4‐10,11‐17 & 18‐24 June 2011 for Southwest monsoonseason 2011 were prepared.‣ A paper entitled “Natural Hazards in relation withLandslides”, by Dr. Arun Singh, Dr. D. M. Rase andDr. U. S. De published in the International Journal ofMeteorology, Vol. 36, <strong>No</strong>. 358, March 2011, 51‐55.‣ Eight research papers, four shorter contributions andtwo letters were published in quarterlydepartmental journal “MAUSAM” Vol. 62, <strong>No</strong>. 2,(April 2011).‣ Synopsis on “<strong>India</strong>n NE Monsoon as a component ofAsian Winter Monsoon and its relationship with largescale global and regional circulation features”submitted by Smt. B. Geetha, S.A. Research Scholarfor Ph.D degree under the guidance of Dr. Y. E. A.Raj, Supervisor has been forwarded to University ofMadras.Dr. S. K. Roy Bhowmik briefing Dr. G. Mohan KumarUSERS’ MEET ON WEATHER SERVICESUsers’ Meet on Weather servicesUsers’ Meet on ‘ Weather services to Karnataka statedelivered by IMD’ was organized by M C Bangaloreon 27 th June 2011 at the Auditorium, KarnatakaVeterinary Council, Hebbal, Bangalore. Dr. Y.E.A. Raj,DDGM, RMC Chennai welcomed the delegates. AVM(Dr.) Ajit Tyagi, DG IMD presided over the functionand released the booklet on Met. Centre, Bangalore.Chief Guest Shri N. C. They were shown round the RS/RW Observatory, Forecasting Section &all other instruments installed in the Campus.‣ 15 teachers from different high schools visited M.C. Bhubaneswar on 26 June 2011 for field observationtraining and familiarise with other activities of IMD under PROBE‐ORISSA programme.‣ A team of scientists from the Bangladesh <strong>India</strong> Myanmar Srilanka Thailand Economic Co‐operation (BIMSTEC)Nations visited NWP Division on 23 rd June, 2011. They were shown various NWP Models and functioning ofHPCS.APR – JUN 2011AVM (Dr.) Ajit Tyagi, Shri Rajiv Sharma & IMD officialsduring the health check up in IMDBABA SAHEB DR. B. R. ABhandara was also arranged in the premises on thisoccasion.Dr. Shailesh Nayak, Secretary MoES & AVM(Dr.) Ajit Tyagi, DG, IMD & IMD officials duringinaugural functions of Seismic Telemetry Networkfor Earthquake ActivityAPR – JUN 2011Hon’ble Minister Dr. Ashwani Kumar, other guests &IMD OfficialsSEISMIC TELEMETRY NETWORK FOR REAL TIMEMONITORING OF EARTHQUAKE ACTIVITYEarthquake Risk Evaluation Center has setup a VSAT based<strong>No</strong>rth‐East seismic telemetry network, with objectives of nearreal time monitoring of seismic activity and dissemination ofearthquake report to Government and disaster managementauthorities within shortest possible time, to initiate relief andrescue operation in the event of occurrence of any damagingearthquake and also to generate high quality data to be usedfor seismic hazard evaluation and research. This networkconsists of 20 field stations spread over different states of NE<strong>India</strong> with Central Receiving Station at IMD H.Q., New Delhi &Data Collection Center at CSO Shillong. This network has beeninaugurated by Secretary, MoES on 11 th May 2011 and madeoperational in a brief inaugural function held at MausamBhawan, New Delhi.PROJECTS EVALUATIONIMD (EMRC) evaluated seventy four (74) Thermal Power, ninety (90) Industrial and thirty nine (39) Coal Mineprojects referred to this <strong>Department</strong> by the Ministry of Environment & Forests, New Delhi. IMD (APEC) evaluatedone scientific project report and expert comments have been communicated to <strong>Department</strong> of Science &Technology, New Mehrauli Road, New Delhi.3
