CITY OF KAMLOOPSJOB TITLE:Lifeguard Instructor IPAY GRADE: 6NATURE AND SCOPE OF WORKPerforms relatively complex lifeguarding and aquatics instructional work of a semi-skilled nature under thegeneral supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator or Deck Leader - Aquatics. Work involves observing andexercising control over the activities of the public and patrons in supervised swimming areas at either anindoor or outdoor aquatic facility, or at a riverside beach; rescuing bathers in distress; administeringresuscitation or first aid as required; teaching and evaluating swimming, water safety, rescue breathingand elementary lifesaving courses; and cleaning and disinfecting aquatic facilities. The job involvesindoor and outdoor work with exposure to variable weather conditions, direct sun, chlorine odours andinfectious diseases; the possibility of minor injury; constant visual attention and mental concentrationwhen guarding and average physical exertion when instructing or performing janitorial duties. Inattentionor carelessness in the performance of the job could result in permanent disability or death to members ofthe public using aquatic facilities. The incumbent must exercise courtesy, tact, diplomacy, and somepersuasion in contacts with co-workers and the public. The possibility of causing financial loss fromnormal error is minor. A deterioration in service could cause a hazard to the public.ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK1. Performs lifeguarding duties at indoor and outdoor swimming and wading pools and at riversidebeaches observing and exercising control over the activities of the public and patrons in and outof the water; ensures for public safety; rescues bathers in distress; enforces pool and park rulesregarding public conduct and health; and ejects or calls for the removal of troublesome patrons.2. Teaches learn-to-swim, stroke improvement, water safety, and elementary lifesaving courses;registers course applicants; assists with arrangements for course times and classes; prepareslecture notes and resource materials, and evaluates and qualifies pupils.3. Checks lifeguarding equipment to ensure proper condition and keeps same in readiness at alltime.4. Uses row boat, power boat, torpedo canisters, life ring, spine board, oxygen tank and mask, andrelated lifesaving equipment; administers CPR and first aid as required; calls for emergencymedical services as required.5. Cleans and disinfects washrooms, change rooms, wading pools, and showers; maintains beacharea free of litter and hazards.6. Prepares and submits course registration, pupil evaluation, statistical, complaint, first aid, andrelated administrative reports.7. Provides information and assistance to inquiring public regarding aquatic programs offered; refersunusual problems, complaints, or inquiries to a supervisor.8. Handles registrations, cash and admissions as required.9. Monitors and tests pool water chemistry for chlorine and pH levels; operates and adjusts asrequired water treatment filtering and heating equipment.10. Performs related duties as required.
