The Links at Stono Ferry has a history datingback to the revolutionary war and the accolades to match it. Stono Ferry has been voted Charleston area GolfCourse of the year, top 100 courses to play in the Carolinas, played host to the NCAA Men’s SouthernConference Golf Championship and in 2008 the NCAA Women’s Southern Conference Golf Championship.Unfortunately, the event was shortened to 18 holes after torrential downpours forced the cancelation of roundone. On Sunday, after a 2-hour frost delay, the juniors set out on Stono Ferry with one thing in mind, to capturethe title in their respective age division.As the cold, windy, and damp conditions proved to be difficult for most of the competitors,there was one who managed to rise above it all and shoot an even-par 72 to take home theBoys 16-19 Division trophy. Stan Gautier a 17-year-old from Paris, France, who is attendingthe Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy (HHIJGA) while here in the states, wasobviously not bothered by the conditions as he seemed to be on cruise control all day long.Tying for second-place was Dylan Healey of Franklin, TN and Andrew Gai of Westport, CT.Both of these young men shot a very respectable, four-over par 76, on a day when anythingwithin a few strokes of par proved to be difficult.Gautier comes to the U.S. once a year to work on his game and play in tournaments over the winter. While inthe states, he trains at the HHIJGA and has been doing so for 4 years. After the round, Stan reflected on hisday, “this is my first IJGT win, and I am happy to have gotten the victory and be going home with the trophy.”In the Boys 13-15 Division the competition came from places near and far, ranging fromCalifornia to Pennsylvania. As for the victor, it was none other than the HHIJGA’s ownLuke Park from Monument, CO who came away with the trophy after shooting a veryrespectable 77. J.J. Qualkenbush of La Quinta, CA and a HHIJGA standout took homesecond place honors while Grant Newton of Finleyville, PA secured third placerespectively.In talking with Luke after the event he said “I like this course just because it is a little different and the parfive’s are where I made up most of my ground on the rest of the field.” When asked to recall how many IJGTchampionships he has in all he replied “I lost track.” Luke is now 15, a sophomore in high school, and he planson trying to continue his golf career after high school.
