Walkathon Update – HighlandsThe Annual Fred Gressler MemorialWalkathon was held on a beautifulHalloween day at the newly renovated ParkerStadium at Highlands Middle School. Balloonslined the stadium while music played over thespeaker system making for a festive and funevent. Parent volunteers joining the walkers atthe event to make it so successful were NickiTumminia, Joanne McMahon, Paxton andDonna Louis as well as event Chairs AngelTinnirello and Jane Leone. In addition to ourcommittee volunteers, Chris Tinnirello andMike Leone helped out behind the scenes andseveral other parents, younger siblings, grandparents,and aunts joined the festivities tocheer on our walkers and see all the fabulousHalloween costumes. <strong>Tiger</strong> spirit arrived withhelp from mascots Alex and Madeline Smith.Students who participate in the walk raise aminimum of ten dollars for the WPMS PTA.The 7th grade at Highlands raised $2,118.00,followed closely by the 6th grade with$2,088.00. The 8th grade raised $1,738.00. The7th grade students were all treated to icecream in November courtesy of Arbo OneConstruction for their efforts in raising themost money.Top fundraisers at each grade level raising$100 or more included:Grade 6: Kate Bettino, Ceara Gilmartin-Donohue, and Philip Philippidis.Grade 7: Shamus Cardon, Teddy Chomiak,Max Golden, Kate Leone, Michael Lotito,Scott Louis, Cav Meininger, Gabby Mucciolo,Meghan Swamy, Gabrielle Tinnirello andKatie Van Bergen.Grade 8: Jason Annunziata, Doug Honig andJosh Pam.These students were rewarded with Targetand Starbucks gift cards as well as one specialprize of a week at Swish Hoop Camp courtesyof Coach Sue Adams. Congratulations to allthe top fundraisers and a BIG THANK YOU toALL our walkathon participants for supportingthe WPMS PTA fundraising effort.The Walkathon is not possible without thecooperation of the entire Highlands staff especiallythat of the staff in the main officeincluding Connie Bellantoni, AnnetteAdamiak, Silvia Merluccio and Barbara Turveyin the attendance office. Walkathon Update – EastviewThe students at Eastview Middle School hada wonderful time walking to raise moneyfor the Fred Gressler Memorial Walkathon.Students assembled in the auditorium tobegin the day’s festivities. Mr. Connors,Superintendent of <strong>Schools</strong>, was also on handto help kick off the Walkathon. Our event cochair,Elaine Strug got up on stage and dancedwith our <strong>Tiger</strong> mascot to show everyone howenthusiastic we were about the walk.After announcements, students and teacherswent out to the track and began walking. Thestudents were definitely excited and lovedevery minute of their time outside. The warmweather, combined with the entertainingcostumes made the event truly memorable.Our own Mr. Cloherty, Principal, auditioneda few months early for the Wizard of Oz bydressing as Dorothy, complete with pigtailsand ruby slippers! (Although Toto was nowhere to be found!)Afterwards, students reassembled back insidethe auditorium and the WPMS PTA handed outlollipops to thank the students. This year theEastview campus exceeded their expectationsby raising $8,001.12 which is the most money inthe history of the event! Thank you to all of ourstudents for a job well done!! A big thank yougoes out to our 8th grade students who raisedthe most money of the three grades. The 8thgraders were rewarded with an Ice Cream Socialcourtesy of WPMS PTA and parent donations.We would also like to give a special thankyou to the Dagher family for their very generousdonation. Thank you’s to all the parentvolunteers who donated not only money buttheir time to show support for this worthwhilecause. An extra special thank you to co-chairsGurjeet Dhallu and Elaine Strug for makingthis event possible.Thank you also to teachers and staff whotook time out of their busy schedules to supportthe Walkathon, especially Julie Pastoreand Marcia Denais for all their help, guidanceand support in making this day happen. Highlands Clothing SwapThis year we will be holding our 1st clothing swap at Highlands.Clothing swaps are a great way to recycle and refresh our wardrobeand enjoy ‘new-to-you’ items while raising environmental awareness,helping our community and being kind to our planet. We’re asking studentsand staff to donate gently worn clothing or accessories, appropriatefor middle school age children of all sizes. Items should be ingood condition and clean (keep in mind we don’t plan on ironing!)Now don’t worry, the staff won’t miss out on the fun!
