chosen to attend the Deep Sea Div<strong>in</strong>g School. He graduated <strong>as</strong>a Deep Sea Div<strong>in</strong>g Medical Technician and 1 st Cl<strong>as</strong>s Diver. Hew<strong>as</strong> <strong>as</strong>signed to various submar<strong>in</strong>e rescue ships andsubmar<strong>in</strong>es. His tour <strong>in</strong>cluded the USS Florikan, USSChanticleer, Submar<strong>in</strong>e USS Halibut, USS Sea Wolf, USSSaratoga Air Craft Carrier. This experience caused him to beselected and tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>as</strong> an Aquanaut <strong>in</strong> the “Sea Lab” program.He served two tours at the Experimental Div<strong>in</strong>g Unit and madethe 1 st 600 foot saturation dive and the 1 st dive <strong>in</strong> the OceanSimulation Facility <strong>in</strong> Panama City, Fl. He w<strong>as</strong> one of theauthors of “The Unlimited Duration Saturation Div<strong>in</strong>gExcursion Tables”.He retired from the Navy <strong>in</strong> 1977. After leav<strong>in</strong>g the Navy, hejo<strong>in</strong>ed McDermott Div<strong>in</strong>g and worked <strong>as</strong> an Offshore Div<strong>in</strong>gsuper<strong>in</strong>tendent for several years before becom<strong>in</strong>g the Div<strong>in</strong>gMedical Officer. Dur<strong>in</strong>g this time he participated <strong>as</strong> <strong>as</strong>upervisor <strong>in</strong> Igloo 88, which w<strong>as</strong> a saturation dive to 1800feet <strong>in</strong> Aberdeen, Scotland at the National Hyperbaric Center.He left McDermott and jo<strong>in</strong>ed Cal-Dive International <strong>as</strong> VicePresident of Safety, Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, Human Resources and Security.Dur<strong>in</strong>g his <strong>as</strong>sociation with McDermott and Cal-Dive, hebecame <strong>in</strong>volved with the Association of Div<strong>in</strong>g ContractorsInternational. He served on the ADC board for 14 years andserved <strong>as</strong> its president for 3 terms. In 2001, he w<strong>as</strong> awardedthe ADC Safety Medical & Education committee’s STAR award.In 2006, he w<strong>as</strong> one of 41 members worldwide to be <strong>in</strong>ducted<strong>in</strong>to the Commercial Div<strong>in</strong>g Hall of Fame.Dur<strong>in</strong>g his retirement he operated a successful div<strong>in</strong>g safetyconsult<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess.His crema<strong>in</strong>s will be buried at sea near the Naval Div<strong>in</strong>g andSalvage Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Center <strong>in</strong> Panama City, FlMemorial contributions may be made to Mark V MonumentScholarship Fund, 501 Blue Heron Drive, Panama City, Fl32404
