About Fray de UrdanetaBorn in the small Basque town <strong>of</strong> Ordizia, Spain in 1508, Fr. Andres de Urdanetawas a renowned navigator and soldier be<strong>for</strong>e becoming an Augustinian priest atthe age <strong>of</strong> 48. The organizer and navigator <strong>of</strong> the expedition <strong>of</strong> Miguel Lopez deLegaspi on board the ship Capitana in 1564, he reached Cebu in 1565. He orderedthe building <strong>of</strong> a church, now known as the Basilica Minore de Sto. Niño, and wasresponsible <strong>for</strong> the Christianization <strong>of</strong> the province.He was tasked to discover a stable and usable return route from Manila to the Port<strong>of</strong> Acapulco, Mexico. He then departed on 2 June 1565 and arrived in Acapulcoon 8 October 1565.For the next 250 years, the Urdaneta route was used in the Manila-AcapulcoGalleon Trade that brought Asian culture to Europe through Mexico.
