About Fray de UrdanetaBorn in the small Basque town of Ordizia, Spain in 1508, Fr. Andres de Urdanetawas a renowned navigator and soldier before becoming an Augustinian priest atthe age of 48. The organizer and navigator of the expedition of Miguel Lopez deLegaspi on board the ship Capitana in 1564, he reached Cebu in 1565. He orderedthe building of a church, now known as the Basilica Minore de Sto. Niño, and wasresponsible for the Christianization of the province.He was tasked to discover a stable and usable return route from Manila to the Portof Acapulco, Mexico. He then departed on 2 June 1565 and arrived in Acapulcoon 8 October 1565.For the next 250 years, the Urdaneta route was used in the Manila-AcapulcoGalleon Trade that brought Asian culture to Europe through Mexico.
