<strong>potato</strong> varieties <strong>of</strong> Potato Research <strong>and</strong> DevelopmentStation Targu Secuiesc had been homologated.Materials <strong>and</strong> MethodsAll varieties are obta<strong>in</strong>ed by sexuat hybridizationfollowed by <strong>in</strong>dividual clonal selection, accord<strong>in</strong>g tothe classical scheme <strong>of</strong> <strong>potato</strong> breed<strong>in</strong>g – 12 years 3 .The ma<strong>in</strong> steps <strong>of</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g method were:-Established <strong>of</strong> genitors accord<strong>in</strong>g to physiological <strong>and</strong>technological qualities <strong>of</strong> tubers with dest<strong>in</strong>ation forprocess<strong>in</strong>g;-Sexuat hybridization, followed by all steps: seedl<strong>in</strong>gs,vegetative populations, descendants, comparative cropsfor completion (3 years <strong>in</strong> the network <strong>of</strong> <strong>research</strong> units<strong>and</strong> 3 years <strong>in</strong> the network <strong>of</strong> National Institute for test<strong>in</strong>g<strong>and</strong> Registration <strong>of</strong> Varieties / ISTIS) <strong>and</strong> selection forma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the field <strong>of</strong> clonal selection on over 1000m a.s.l. (Red Water);-Homologation, obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g license <strong>and</strong> registration <strong>in</strong>the National List <strong>of</strong> Cultivated Varieties.All three mentioned varieties have a high yieldcapacity, have a starch content over 18%, are resist<strong>in</strong>gto <strong>potato</strong> cyst nematodes (Globodera rostochiensis),<strong>and</strong> black wart (Synchitrium endobioticum) <strong>and</strong>viruses. The starch content <strong>and</strong> process<strong>in</strong>g quality weredeterm<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> the laboratories <strong>of</strong> SCDC TarguSecuiesc, resistance to <strong>potato</strong> cyst nematodes atFagaras Centre, resistance to black wart at PojorataCentre Suceava <strong>and</strong> resistance to viruses at virologyLaboratory (I.N.C.D.C.S.Z. Brasov).<strong>Results</strong> <strong>and</strong> DiscussionsPotato variety COVALGenitors (BOBR X SUPER)Morphological characters: Tubers have round –oval shape. Color <strong>of</strong> sk<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> pulp is yellow. Stems areerect. Leafs are semi compact with middle size foliols,green clear. Flowers are white <strong>and</strong> big.Physiological characteristics: The vegetationperiod is 90 – 100 days (middle late variety). It isresistant to PVY <strong>and</strong> nematodes (Globoderarostochiensis) <strong>and</strong> middle tolerant to late blight(Phytophthora <strong>in</strong>festans (Mont.) de Bary).Cul<strong>in</strong>ary quality: It has a good cul<strong>in</strong>ary quality(group B). It is recommended for consumption dur<strong>in</strong>gautumn <strong>and</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ter.Yield capacity; It has a high yield capacity (47.8t/ha).Zon<strong>in</strong>g: Coval variety is recommended for veryfavorable zones <strong>of</strong> <strong>potato</strong> production.Potato variety REDSECGenitors (M.P.I. 61-516-20 X CERTO)Morphological characters: Tubers have roundshape. Color <strong>of</strong> sk<strong>in</strong> is red <strong>and</strong> color <strong>of</strong> pulp is yellow.Stems are middle to big size <strong>and</strong> are semi erect. Leafs 29


are semi compact with big folios, green clear. Flowersare white reddish <strong>and</strong> big.Physiological characters: The vegetation periodare 100 – 110 days <strong>and</strong> this variety belong<strong>in</strong>g to middlelate varieties. It is resistant to PVY <strong>and</strong> tolerant to lateblight (Phytophthora <strong>in</strong>festans (Mont.) de Bary).Cul<strong>in</strong>ary quality: It has a good cul<strong>in</strong>ary quality(group B). It is recommended for consumption dur<strong>in</strong>gautumn <strong>and</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ter.Yield capacity; It has a high yield capacity (44.3t/ha).Zon<strong>in</strong>g: Redsec variety is recommended for allfavorable zones <strong>of</strong> <strong>potato</strong> production.Potato variety MILENIUMGenitors (FANAL X OMEGA)Morphological characters: Tubers have round –oval shape with shallow eyes. Color <strong>of</strong> sk<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> pulp isyellow. Stems are tall. Leafs have middle size foliols,green clear. Flowers are white.Physiological characters: The vegetation periodare 100 days <strong>and</strong> this variety belong<strong>in</strong>g to middle latevarieties. It is resistant to PVY <strong>and</strong> sensitive to lateblight (Phytophthora <strong>in</strong>festans (Mont.) de Bary). It isresistant to cist nematodes (Globodera rostochiensis).Cul<strong>in</strong>ary quality: It has 18.53% starch content<strong>and</strong> belongs to C group. It is recommended to w<strong>in</strong>terconsumption <strong>and</strong> process<strong>in</strong>g.Yield capacity; It has a high yield capacity (38.1t/ha).Zon<strong>in</strong>g: Milenium variety is recommended for allfavorable zones <strong>of</strong> <strong>potato</strong> production.30


Potato variety LUIZAGenitors (FANAL X OMEGA)Morphological characters: the plant is welldeveloped, with a medium number <strong>of</strong> stems; theflowers are big <strong>and</strong> have white colors. The tubers areoval, with no deep eyes, the sk<strong>in</strong> is yellow <strong>and</strong> theflesh is yellow. The sprouts have a middle size, theyhave a conic shape at the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> development<strong>and</strong> cyl<strong>in</strong>der shape later, the term<strong>in</strong>al bud have a red –violet colors, with short lateral ramifications.Physiological characteristics: Luiza varietybelongs to the group <strong>of</strong> middle late varieties, with avegetation period <strong>of</strong> 85 – 100 days.Yield<strong>in</strong>g capacity: was tested at the Station forAgriculture Research Braila <strong>and</strong> it is over 52.5 tones/ha.Cul<strong>in</strong>ary quality: is very good <strong>and</strong> belongs to Bclass, recommended to production <strong>of</strong> chips, hav<strong>in</strong>g ayellow color, after fry<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> 7 rate on a scale from 1to 9. The content <strong>of</strong> starch is over 20%. This varietycan be used for pommes frites production.Resistance to diseases <strong>and</strong> pest: Luiza variety ismiddle sensitive to late blight on leaves <strong>and</strong> tubers, veryresist<strong>in</strong>g to Y (PVY) <strong>and</strong> leaf roll (PLRV) viruses, resist<strong>in</strong>gto <strong>potato</strong> cyst nematodes (Globodera rostochiensis).Potato variety ALBIOANAGenitors MPI 69 x CARPATINMorphological characters: the plant is welldeveloped, with a medium number <strong>of</strong> stems; theflowers have a middle size <strong>and</strong> white colours with darkyellow anther. The tubers have a round shape, withyellow sk<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> white flesh, which is very rare <strong>and</strong>confers a high quality <strong>of</strong> chips production.Physiological characteristics: Albioana varietybelongs to the group <strong>of</strong> middle late varieties, with avegetation period <strong>of</strong> 90 – 100 days.Yield<strong>in</strong>g capacity: was tested at the Station forAgriculture Research Braila <strong>and</strong> it is over 56.2 tones/ha.Cul<strong>in</strong>ary quality: is good <strong>and</strong> belongs to B class,suitable for chips production, the colours <strong>of</strong> chips afterfry<strong>in</strong>g is white, obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g 9 rates on scale from 1 to 9.The content <strong>of</strong> starch is over 19%.Resistance to diseases <strong>and</strong> pest: Albioanavariety is resist<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>potato</strong> cyst nematodes(Globodera rostochiensis), middle resistance to lateblight on leaves <strong>and</strong> tubers, resist<strong>in</strong>g to viruses Y. 31

Because <strong>of</strong> PVS which not produces visiblesymptoms.The vegetative multiplication <strong>of</strong> <strong>potato</strong> permits aneasier breed<strong>in</strong>g, without modification <strong>of</strong> geneticallybase, but it has a strong drawback because <strong>of</strong> viruses’degeneration <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>of</strong> viruses’ <strong>in</strong>fection yearafter year.The selection <strong>of</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g represents apluralism <strong>of</strong> technical <strong>and</strong> organisational measureswith the aim to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> the biological purity, typicalcharacters <strong>and</strong> low viruses <strong>in</strong>fection <strong>of</strong> new <strong>and</strong>valuable breed<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>es.The results <strong>of</strong> <strong>research</strong>es contributed tomodernisation <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>of</strong> efficiency <strong>of</strong> Nationalprogramme for selection <strong>of</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong>References1.
