To the year 2010, governments, organizations and individualsinvolved in the Canadian response to HIV/AIDSshould focus their collective efforts on six key strategiesin order to get ahead of the epidemic. Each strategyis linked to every other in some way and is not onlyvaluable in itself but is also valuable as part of the whole.1. Increase awareness of the impact of HIV/AIDS andincrease the commitment to sustained funding forHIV/AIDS programs and services2. Address the social factors/inequities drivingthe epidemic3. Step up prevention efforts4. Strengthen diagnosis, care, treatment andsupport services5. Provide leadership in global efforts6. In theseinstances, baseline data will need to bedeveloped so that we can eventually betteridentify our progress.• It is important to include targets for eacharea of action and for each vulnerablepopulation because action is required forall populations.• The targets identified in the document areincluded not only to identify and measureprogress but also to motivate action. If thedocument’s vision is to be achieved, boldtargets are necessary. 401.INCREASE AWARENESS OFTHE IMPACT OF HIV/AIDS ANDINCREASE THE COMMITMENTTO SUSTAINED FUNDINGFOR HIV/AIDS PROGRAMSAND SERVICESRATIONALEDespite the lack of high-profile HIV educationcampaigns over the past 10 years, mostCanadians think HIV is a serious health issue(60% consider it very serious and 35% somewhatserious). 41 A survey of Canadian youth ingrades 7, 9 and 11 revealed that most studentsare relatively knowledgeable about HIV, andtheir level of knowledge increases as theyage. 42 These relatively high levels of public/youth awareness are likely due to:• media coverage of the internationalepidemic• sexual health education (School was themain source of information about humansexuality and HIV/AIDS for 51% of malesand 41% of females in Grade 9 and for 67%of males and 58% of females in Grade 11) 43While members of the public are fairlyknowledgeable about HIV, they have some40With respect to setting targets for vulnerable populations, data collection should respect their right to confidentiality and privacy.41EKOS Research Associates.
