The police said that it did not allowthe meeting to hold because of security reasons. The action of the police was clearly a violation ofSection 40 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of <strong>Nigeria</strong>, which guaranteed the right topeaceful assembly and association.RECOMMENDATIONS1. Government should comply with the provisions of the Constitution that guarantee civil andpolitical rights.2. <strong>Nigeria</strong> should be more committed to its regional and international human rights obligations.3. The <strong>Nigeria</strong> Police should be sensitized on their role in the promotion and protection of rights tofreedom of movement and peaceful assembly.78
